Re: Name origin

I have been doing research on the Levis family line through Samuel Levis. I checked on some information about the Levis origin. I do know that the Levis name is french de Levis (pronounced de Levi). The family had grown and one went to Italy and and there was earlier evidence of a Levis that went to England. There was also Levis influence in Canada. There is a birth of a Levis in 1552 in Beeston, Leicestershire, England. The Levis family had grown in England and went to Ireland. The story of a Levis leaving France during the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. It was possible a family member fled to England yet not the reason. I have a coat of arms found in the French Archives by William Bittle Levis B:1865 and then Reproduced by Seth Panacoast Levis (1801-1878). The coat of arms is that of a Lord or Baron. The only missing link is the name of the Levis that went from France to England.
There are people who disagree with the Levis French connection yet most of the French Archived records have the Levis name going to conquests or traveling to these countries as a represenative to France. The early history you provide is great and thanks. The Samuel Levis house is still standing yet the present owner had passed away. The house of Samuel Levis (1682) is on the national Register of historic homes.

Re: Levis Surname

Hi Cindy
Just read your threads on finding your ancestors from Belluno. I to ran into a brick wall trying to find past family members as well. I thought, "there has to be a better way", so I decided to save up some money and had a family search done by a professional researcher. It did cost money, but, gee the information that came back was unbelievable!!! The researcher was able to go back around 300 years. The search revealed that my gggg grandfather 1730 was one of the first Levis's to settle in Roncan. From Andrea and Cattarina Levis came 40 members upto 1864 with my great grandfather. For me luckily, my ancestors stayed around Roncan. The information is kept in the main church at Cadola.
If Polpet is under the same church juristiction as Roncan it would be most likely that you could get a lot of information from the church in Cadola.
If you are doing your own searching and contacting, run a search on "David's Italian Form Letters" it is attached to the Angelfire's web site- it shows you how to write letters to the churches with english to Italian translations side by side.
Hope this helps
Good luck
Vic Levis
Teresa changed her last name to "Celli" when she became a professional opera singer/actress.

Osvaldo came to USA and settled in Dean, Cambria Co., PA for a short period of time and then remove. To make sure, do you know his wife's name? I have not been successful at finding info about the Levis' but realize there is a possibility that the name might be Jewish. I am extremely interested to know if we are talking about the same Joseph Levis. My email is violinkate14@yahoo.com. Please write me with any info you might know regarding Joseph Levis. Thanks

I am searching for any information about the Levis Family in MT Morris New York. I have my GGG Grandmother Mary Levis, b. 1828 in Ireland. She came to the states with her Husband James Croston b. 1817 also in Cork Ireland. Their first 4 children: Sarah, John, William, and Susanna were also born in Ireland around the Bandon Cork area. They settled in Mt. Morris and had 7 more children: Margaret, Mary, James, Eliza, Robert, Sarah and Charles. There are many Crostons and Levis families in that area and I beleive they are closely related. Any Information would be appreciated. I also Have Mary's Father listed as Robert and her mother as Susan. Robert died young and Susan came to the sates with Mary and lived with them until her death. Any information would be appreciated.

Diana Holland lholland66@comcast.net

I see that you are researching the Levis line. I myself am researching the Levis line. Sadly I have not gotten very far. My researching has stopped with John Levis born in Cork Ireland in 1827. He married Eliza Scott (who was born in Dublin Ireland). The two married in Vermont. We think they came from Ireland through Canada and then down to Vermont and from there out to Ohio. I can't seem to find his parents anywhere. Have you come across these names at all? Any help you can offer would be greatly apprecitated.

I checked Dont Alpi on the web and found most references were to Turin (Torino) Italy. This is where my ancestors came from around 1812. Joseph Levis, son of Antoine (not Antonio) came to North America as a mercenary to fight in the war of 1812 on behalf of the British against the Americans. At the end of the war he was granted land in the Ottawa Valley in Ontario Canada. I have pretty good records back to that point the the trail goes cold in Turin. We believe that since Joseph's father was Antoine that we was French rather than Italian and possible left France during the French revolution in the late 1790's. The Levis name in France goes back to 900AD but there were so many branches (mostly upper middle class to very elite) it's hard to tell which branch we may have come from. Given your family came from the same area of Italy, there may be a connection way back there. I have a little more data and some conjecture. If your interested let me know.
Try this, I do not know if anyone recommended this go to www.ellisisland.org. It will pull up names that came through there up to 1924. I found people on it and it gave me the ship names. You can also sign up for free to get a bit more information. This should get you started. It gives the residence and their age and year arrived. This should help you narrow it down.

Interesting information.

For the record, to this day there are several Levis family in Skibbereen, County Cork.

Historically, some very wealthy families were of that surname. Holders of thousands of acres of land.

It appears likely, that the name came from England before it's arrival in Ireland due to the family being members of the Church of England instead of Roman Catholic.

Thank you for your response.

Regards,

J.

My North American roots began in Turin Italy in 1812. No relationship there however we believe the Levis family name originated in France where the name goes back to 900 AD. We also believe that the Levis name spread far and wide around the time of the French Revolution as aristocracy fled France to avoid the purge. I am aware of other Levis names coming to North America from the Leeds area of England, from Germany and of course Italy. This is the first time I have heard of the name coming from Ireland.

My Levis branch is from New Brunswick, Canada.
I was told, by another researcher, that they came from Skibbereen, County Cork.

Simon Levis
b Ireland, c 1845
m 23 April 1870, Portland Parish, New Bruswick,
Catherine Jones
b pos. Saint John, New Brunswick, c 1850; d c 1875

The 1881 census has Simon Levis, age 30, widower, listed as widower living with his sister Jane Levis and her
husband Henry Baker ward #2 Portland.
There was a Levis that did go to Italy. The main Levis family that came from England settled in the Pennsylvia around the 1680's. There did remain some in France, England and even Ireland. Although my research is mainly in Pennsylvania and England. Some Levis Family move out west further north and even south through out the United States. It is a large family in the early years some had on average 6 to 7 children. Good luck in your search If you need help for the Pennsylvania area Levis family feel free to contact me.

I don't know if Marsha has contacted you with her information. Marsha and I have been talking back and forth. My husband is related to John and Eliza through a different sibling than Marsha. I have requested John's Civil War records. He fought for the 114th Ohio Union soldiers. He was injured during a battle at Vicksburg. He died later after the war because of his wounds. I am hoping to learn more once I get his records. I also know that while he was at war his wife's house got taken over for one night during Morgan's raid.

It gives one a sense of the bigger picture of our ancestry digging and although my only link seems to be that my relatives were married there, I know I am going to have fun tracing their son-in-law Elie LePage's family back to France where I am told his people originally came from.
With hitting brick walls this piece you wrote has revitalized me.
Thanks
Gail
P.S.
Thomas Levis in 1786

November 8, 1786:
Whereas I the subscriber (wife of John Warrier, of Upper Darby, in the county of Chester) was on the 21st of October, 1786, accused before Isaac Howell, Esq., of the city of Philadelphia, with stealing several pails of butter from the house of Adam Sitters, Inn-keeper, in Strawberry Alley, Philadelphia, did call myself Elizabeth Holmes, the wife Abraham Holmes, of Springfield township, Chester County, to the great injury to her Character and Reputation. Now in order to clear Elizabeth Holmes from the infamy of my wicked conduct, I, Elizabeth Warrier, do publicly declare that I did assume her name in order to extricate myself, and have the charge against me made up. And for the deception which I have imposed on the public in the above instance and the apersion of her character, I do publicly condemn, and punish to the world.
Witness my hand.
Elizabeth Warrier
Chester County, ss.

The above declaration was read to Elizabeth Warrier, and acknowledged by her to be the truth, which she signed before me, Thomas Levis, Esq., one of the Justices of the Peace for Chester County, the 31st day of October, 1786.
Thomas Levis

I am not related to this family, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Runaway Women, Elopements And Other Miscreant Deeds, As Advertised In The Pennsylvania Gazette - 1728 -1789. (together with a few abused wives and unfortunate children)." Compiled by Judith Ann Highley Meier. Published by Closson Press. 1993. James married Elizabeth Reed. They lived in Sheldon, Vermont and had several children. One of thier daughter's is Pearl. She is my husband's grandmother. I would be happy to send you what I have. I also did a whole write up on John Levis and his time in the Civil War.

Justine

Need Help. My GrGr grandfathers name is Charles "Levis" Stringfellow, b 1838 on the 1850 census of Springfield township Chester Pa, Charles Stringfellow (age 11) was living with Charles Levis and family, Does anyone have any family information on this ? In following Charles Stringfellow, It appears as though he adopted the Levis name as a middle name. He was married to Mary Ann Brooks Roe and died in Chester Pa. Another of his descendants also carried Levis as a middle name. Can anyone shed some light on this ?
Thanks Roland

If you are still interested, I have some information on the Levis family that lived in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. My family goes back to a Levis branch that left England sometime after 1680 but before 1730, arriving in Pennsylvania. A daughter of that family married one of the Pennock sons, who were Quakers, so that should mean that at least some of the Levis family were also Quaker.

If you would like any information on dates and names, so you can see if anything matches up, I'd be happy to share.
