I am so sorry to take so long to reply. I did not see your message until today, my grandma may have had a brother. All I know is that she was 17-18 years old when she came to N.Y. and she went to work for Campbell soup company. She later married a man who took off and left her with 5 small children. His name was Levy, I think his first name was Alphonse. Grandma had the following children, Frank, Henri, Matilda, Joan and Melanie Levy, my mother. They had a awful childhood due to a lack of money and a father. Grandma never married again, and she had an alias Julia Day. She lived much of her life in Brooklyn, and was a very nice person, she used to sing to me in french and could play an accordian. She loved dogs, and nick knacks she would buy in the 5 and 10 cent stores on 5th Ave, in Bklyn.

POW/MIA Korean War, LEVY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: LEO LEVY
Born: 1929
Date of loss: April 22, 1951 MIA
Home of Record: Los Angeles, Calif

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
J.G.W. your post was made 9 years ago and I just started researching my family tree. In my search both Stephen / Steven and Punce / Puce are on my great great great side of the family. My research has produced a Clarence Leopold Levy as one of the sources but there seems to be another gentleman of the same name that is of no relation that migrated to NY.

My Levy side of the family migrated to Guatemala and some to NY. Some have stayed in Jamaica. If anyone has information please post.

Annie Levy (1868–1944) and Family

Annie Levy (1868–1944) married Bernhard Baer (1872–1937) and had eight children: Mitchell, Philip (d. 1962), Jacob (1889–1954), Sadie (1891–1981), Stella (1895–1967), Mabel (1897–1979), Fay (1901–1976), and Louis (1902–1937).

I'm looking for anyone who is familiar with this tree, and who could possibly provide antecedents for Bernhard or Annie.

I've noticed that there is a Goldberg family tree on here that seems to match some of these details, and speculation within my family places this tree as belonging to a daughter of Valeria, daughter of Evelyn, daughter of Mabel.

If this rings any bells with you, kindly reply.

I'm not Dan but I have posted in this or related threads since there are many similarities. My great-grandfather Asher came to NYC ca 1873, married Augusta Lemke, soon moved to Paterson where first several children including my grandfather Louis and a younger sib named Bernard (aka Ben) were born, before moving to Philadelphia where the youngest was born. My father, myself, and most of the rest of my family on both sides were born in Philadelphia.

I don't know where in Poland my great-grandfather is from and would love to find out. His original surname was supposedly Posmontier or a variant spelling.l

Hi Dan,

It's been 9 years since you posted your message and I hope this reaches you. I was doing research for a friend about her grandparents Bernard & Augusta Levy of Paterson, NJ and found your post. My friend is the daughter of Charles Bernard Levy, the only son of Bernard and Augusta. He had 6 sisters - Helen, May, Millie, Beckie, Ann and Bert. I believe you may be a grandchild of one of the sisters, Helen or May. If this sounds right, please contact me. Thanks. Ruth

Do you have any more info on Charles from England? My Richard Levy was born 1823 in Gravesend, Kent, England and came to Nova Scotia in 1850. Charles Levy was my grandfather. Charles' brothers moved to New England and settled, just wondering if there is a connection?

I have acquired some passed along knowledge of Hyman Levy.

Hyman Jakob Levy is buried in San Antonio, TX. According
to the city directories Henry may have had a wife (or two)
before showing up as James A. Lenz a decade later married
to Desser May Langley in AL.

I can connect you with family that has information.
I am a Lenz wife.
Cheryllenz@comcast.net

No, I do not think all Levy are related, but I do know that expanding the phonetic spellings to include sound-alikes paid off in my family.
My Levey, Levy, Levie, Lewy, Lewey, Lewie, Lewe, Lui, and Lue family names all lead back to one Lewey/Lewe German ancestor.
Carol,
Typically, the spelling Levy is Jewish, from the tribe of Levites; so in a sense, yes. Levy is a fairly common Jewish last name in the Northeast, I've got 2-3 variants in my own background (Leavy and Levy and maybe Levi). You may not have any close relatives but I'd be surprised if there aren't a few distant ones in the area.
If you aren't Jewish, it might be a variant on the Irish Leavys, which also has a fairly active board here.
Good luck,
Todd

Wow, I didn't expect any information this quickly. Thank you. This information sounds like a good start. You are correct the proper name is Lawrence. I have no idea if there was a middle initial. He was married to my grandmother Belle(Wishnewitz). I am guessing in 1934 or '35 in Manhattan or Brooklyn, NY. My father was born in august of '35 in Brooklyn, NY. They divorsed around 1940. She remarried and my father legally changed his sur name to that of his step-father. I unfortunately don't have access to my fathers birth certificate to verify any other information. Hope this may help narrow down possibilites. Many thanks for your assistance

Interesting to read that Alison traces her ancestry back to Moses Levy of New York, as do I. I understand that Moses was born in 1665 in Germany to Isaac Levy and emigrated to London before moving to New York. I found a picture of Moses Levy at: http://www.hudsonvalley.org/crossroads/image/image22.html
He was apparently a successful merchant. Alison, we must be about 5th cousins --- I trace my ancestry through David Levy and Hannah Low but it was their firstborn, Gersham that was my progenitor. He was married to Elizabeth Gates. Their daughter Roseann married John Crawford of Stewiacke Nova Scotia, and their son John was my great-grandfather. It has been interesting to read about Moses Levy - especially about his daughter Abigail Levy Franks, a fascinating woman. If you have not read about her, google the name - it will be worth it.

Not sure where you are but you might want to try my favorite online phone book search link, http://whitepages.com/5116/person to try to search further. For instance I searched for any Levy in Winston-Salem and got 5 hits in the city and a total of 23 in and nearby.
