Oh, you must be talking about my Aunty Sarah. She's (as far as we know) The only Lewthwaite of our family that lives in British Columbia. The rest of us, live in Alberta, around the Leduc and Edmonton area, and there are very few of us in England.

....William Kendrew Lewthwaite a Master Mariner who married Margaret Reveley in 1842. John's brother in law was a Captain Kendrew they originated from the Birmingham/Dorridge in England......

Reveleys seem to find their way to my in-box. ;-) I have posted this to the Reveley List, perhaps we can locate your husband's 4x grandmother's line. We have Reveleys in London, also mariners, none in Birmingham, as far as I know.

Sarah Reveley
Texas

Hi I have just come across your message re-Lewthwaite family.

This is my husband’s 4 x Grandfather, and it’s also the first time we have seen anything referring to this branch of the Lewthwaite family. My husbands name is James Butcher and the Lewthwaite line is from his grandmother as follows;

James G Butcher 1957
|
James H Butcher 1908 - 1958
|
James Butcher – Sarah Lewthwaite 1884 – 1977
|
Charles Lewthwaite (boatswain) 1851 – 1897 Married Sarah Galer 1880
|
William Kendrew Lewthwaite
|
John Lewthwaite
|
Daniel Lewthwaite - Susanna ?

John Lewthwaite married Ann Terry Kendrew 25-Aug-1805 Christ church Spitalfields London

I am not sure when Daniel Lewthwaite was born or when he married Susanna.
They had 4 children they where;
Daniel Lewthwaite christened Sep 1784 St Botolph Without Aldgate London
Mary Lewthwaite christened 28 Aug 1785 St Botolph Without Aldgate London
John Lewthwaite christened 9th Jan 1787 St Martins Birmingham
Elizabeth Lewthwaite christened 17th Feb 1789 St Martins Birmingham

We are not sure why Daniel and Susanna left London for Birmingham we can only assume his job took him to Birmingham for a short while because he came back to London.

We were extremely surprised about the connection to George Powell. Do you have any more information regarding John Lewthwaite.

I have a photo copy of Daniel Lewthwait’s Will (he was John’s older brother)

John and Ann Terry Lewthwaite had 6 children;
Robert John Thomas 1811, Mary Ann 1809, John Kendrew 1812, Ann Terry 1815, William Kendrew 1817 and Samuel Jackson 1819.
.
It appears that there were kissing cousins in the family.
John Kendrew Lewthwaite married a Christina Wallace their daughter Mary Lewthwaite married Thomas Alfred Lewthwaite (Mathematical Instrument Maker).
Thomas Alfred Lewthwaite is the son of Robert John Lewthwaite. John and Robert are borthers. Robert was a teacher in Rotherhith.
I have a death certificate which is puzzling me, for Mary Lewthwaite, widow of James Lewthwaite, moulder. Mary died in Halifax workhouse in 1878. I haven't been able to trace a James Lewthwaite of the right period who fits the description.

I will happily pass on the certificate to any descendant who can give me some information to help me pin down which branch of the family this couple belonged to.

Jill Dyson Orme

Hello, my name is Valerie daughter of Doris Harding nee Silsbury. Doris was your grandmother Flora's youngest sister, who's Father was Charles William Silsbury married to Florence Jane Bache. It is a family myth that she was of German decent.I have researched back to Florence's Grandfather and he was born in Beckenham,Kent around 1797.
Your Great Grandfather Charles was a Civil Service messenger in 1901, and worked at the Privy Seal's Office as well as Buckingham Palace. Hope this information helps.

I think Catherine was a daughter of Richard Lewthwaite, born abt 1665-70 in Whicham, spouse unknown. Evidence sketchy, but I have his children as Richard (1695), Mary (1699), Ann (1701), Catherine (1706), John (1709), William (1711). If you email me off board I'll send you a transcript of Richard's will which mentions a daughter Catherine. I'm descended from Richard jr - would be interested to know how we're related.

There must have been another Isaac and Jane Lewthwaite in that case. In the 1851 Census, I have a Jane Lewthwaite, 68 and widowed, living in Whitehaven, Cumberland. She is the probable mother of my Jane Lewthwaite who married William Sharpless in 1835 in Isel, Cumberland. Who are the parents of your Isaac Lewthwaite? Maybe there is a connection further back between our two families.

If Jane ann was the daughter of Isaac and Jane Ann Lewthwaite then her date of birth was 1884 at Egremont in Cumberland and she is part of my family tree. The only other Jane born nearer your date in 1823 is the daughter of John and Sarah Lewthwaite.

I have an ancestor named Samuel Lewthwaite - he married Margaret Christian Oct. 3, 1836 in Liverpool, ENG. He attended Cambridge and then he moved his family to Ontario, Canada. Their daughter was Margaret Theresa Lewthwaite, who was born in 1846. She married Charles Ewan from NJ. Do you know anything about this line?

They only info. that I have on Samuel is that he entered Cambridge University on July 4, 1836 at the age of 22. He attend to become a clergy - in the Episc. faith/Church of England. The record states that he disappears from clergy records in 1849. He was married to Margaret Christian on 10-5-1836 at St. Nicholas, Liverpool, ENG. They moved to Ontario, Canada where Margaret gave birth to my GGGrandmother Margaret Teresa Lewthwaite (Luthwaite) in 1846. She married Charles Ewan in NJ. I don't know where Samuel died - could be in NJ cause his daughter was there? Charles and Margaret had five children.

I know that they were in Millville NJ as of 1860 because they are listed in the census. But I'll check more on where they were married.

Robinson Lewthwaite etc

I am at a bit of a stand still with my Lewthwaites and wondered if anyone else had any connection or information? I live in Preston Lancashire and have got as far back as Robinson Lewthwaite b1798 and who married twice at least. According to his second marriage certificate in 1853 ( Mary Williamson) his father was a John Lewthwaite deceased. Robinson's occupation on his son's wedding certificate is retail brewer. The only Robinson Lewthwaite on IGI B1798 was born in Whitehaven which I believe is close to Millom. Although of course I have n proof that this is him.

Robinson had a son John Lewthwaite b1823 possibly in Wigan or ?Wigton. The census always says Wigan.
John married a Sarah Fell Harrison who was b1821 in Ulverston. Sarah's father was a James Harrison.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks Gordon

Re: FAMILY HISTORY

Thwaite was used in the middle ages to denote a clearing in the forest or a small holding. Hence a person called Lew owned or worked such an area. We are related to John and sarah Lewthwaite of Maryport Cumberland. John was merchant seaman. They had 4 sons William, Jack, Eugene and Stanley. Willam owned a shop in workington and died in the 80s, Jack served in the Army and died in 1934? Eugene was a merchant seaman and died at sea in the early 50s. Stanley the youngest of the 4 brothers played Rugby League for barrow before joining the Metropolitan Police. He died in 1989.

Could your Samuel Lewthwaite, born 1814, be the brother of my great-grandfather John Lewthwaite, born 1816 Halifax, West Yorkshire. If so Samuel was the eldest son and John the second son of Joseph Hartley Lewthwaite and Mary Lewthwaite (formerly Lister). I understand this Samuel Lewthwaite to have been a mathematician, Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Lewthwaite of Stockton, Durham

Hi

I have traced my Lewthwaite ancestry to Thomas Lewthwaite born 1855 in Stockton Durham. In the 1871 census he was living with his siblings, James Issac, Lanham and Mary who were all orphans. I know he later married Hannah (surname unknown) from Carlise and they lived around Manchester, Middlesbrough and Stockton. He had quite a few children once of which was my gg-grandma Hannah who married John Bendelow in 1911. I am stuck as their surname keeps changing, it has been Lenthwaite, Lewthwaite and in 1871 Lonethwate??? Please help me get past this. My email is p_n_rickman@hotmail.com if you can help.

Her children are: Mark, Joseph, John, Mary, William, Jane, Sarah, and Elizabeth.

Jane may be the daughter of Isaac and Jane Lewthwaite, but I do not have this confirmed.

I was born January 2, 1970 in Whitehaven, my parents are James Lewthwaite (DOB: January 31, 1938) and Vivian Lewthwaite (Baldock, DOB December 10, 1946), I have 1 sister Sarah Lewthwaite (DOB September 10, 1975 - Edmonton, Alberta Canada). My parents and I left England in 1974, my grandfather was William Lewthwaite from Workington (DOB ??, Death 1984?) and married to Rebecca Lewthwaite (DOB ??, Death October 1969).

We know very little about our history except for these vague details - Possibly a Great Uncle who was a violin maker and possibly another Great Uncle(s) who owned some ships. Their names are unknown. James, my father, had a half-brother named Robert, unsure if his last name was Lewthwaite or not, died approximately 1988 or so.

If anyone has any information or may possibly know this family, please contact me at my email sjl1970@telus.net

They seem to have lived in Annan and Dalston and had sons named John, William, Philip, Joseph (?) and Issac. I believe son Philip moved to Preston, Issac to Ulverstone and Joseph married Mary Lister and moved to Halifax in @ 1813. Is anyone familiar with the Millom or Ulverston Lewthwaites.

Ann had one known brother Robert LEWTHWAITE born 1695 in Haws.

Ann LEWTHWAITE married James DENNY in Millom in 1717.

Pat
Texas
Hi~ I am researching my husdand's family and have run into a road block. I have a Robert Lewthwaite buried in Aberdeen, ID, passed away in 1936. Birth year: 1878, locale unknown. He at some point married to Elizabeth Edyvean. She immigrated from England. Birth year: 1881, death year: 1958, buried next to her husband. This is all of the information that I have, of course except for the lineage to my husband. Robert was 4 Great Uncle, by marriage, to my husband.
Any information would be a great help.
