Hi, Jenni!

My name is Janice Colleen Lewton Texter. I was born in Lisbon, Ohio, on 30 JAN 1930. I can trace my ancestry back six generations to the 1700s when Isaac Lewton, Sr., who reportedly was born in Scotland, sailed from Bristol, England for America.

I have a LOT of info on the Ohio Lewtons. Many Lewtons are still in and around Lisbon, but other descendants, as might be expected, are scattered far and wide.

If you want me to see what I can find for you, tell me your dad's and grandfather's names and anything else that might be relevant. Where were you born and where do you live now?

As for me, among other things I traveled the world, mostly by ship, and also lived in Southeast Asia many years, back when it was a real adventure to do so. I'm now on an island in the Pacific.

I hope you get this OK. Was it 1999 when you first posted your message?

Let me hear from you.
Fondly,

Jan Lewton (Texter, obviously, is my married name.)

Hello Justin,
Your cousin Allen Gardiner checking in here. No, I won't say that I was leaning more toward Isaac Lewton being born in Scotland than England. If you're referring to the 1984 book "The Lewton Family," on page 4, the biographical sketch of Nelson A. Lewton says his grandfather, Isaac Lewton, was born in Scotland." This is absolutely incorrect. The 1850 census says Isaac was born in Maryland, as was his brother Jacob. Their father, the supposed Isaac I, is thought to have come from Bristol, England. The name Lewton is English. Of course there could have been Lewtons living in Scotland, but it's extremely unlikely, in my opinion, that a Lewton from Scotland would go to Bristol, England, to sail for America. We also know there were Lewtons in Gloucestershire, which is near Somerset (where Bristol is), in the 1700s and earlier.

How is your mother? I used to correspond with your grandmother and up until 2 years ago I heard from your aunt, Cleo Wilbur. And where do you live now? I am in the San Francisco Bay area. Best wishes, Allen Gardiner

Hello, Kenny.

You didn't mention if you knew any names besides your father or when he was born or died. There is a Harold Lewton from Iowa in the Social Security Death Index: Born 22 Feb 1922, Died Jun 1971. His SSN: 484-09-3804. Could this be your father? If so, you could get his application for a SSN and find out his parents' names.

In the 1920 census for Sioux City, Iowa, there is a Harold A. Lewton, age 24, born in Nebraska. Occupation is automobile salesman. His father was born in Wisconsin and his mother was born in Nebraska. His wife's name was Eva, age 23, born in Iowa as was her father. Her mother was born in Kansas. They had a daughter, Barbara J., age 2 and a half, born in Iowa. Perhaps the Harold from the SS Death Index mentioned above was a son born in 1922.

I don't know if this helps or not, but just in case this is your family, I thought I'd post the information.

I am a Lewton too. Perhaps we're related.
Phyllis Lewton Scott

Hello Jan,
Hope you are well. I was just following the string of conversation you had with Jennifer Lewton. Now, I had glanced at Allen Gardiner's book "The Lewton Family", which I believe is the book you speak of. My mother has a copy in her possession. I had read the part about Isaac Lewton, but it seemed that Mr. Gardiner couldn't conclude whether Isaac Lewton was from England or Scotland, but he leaned more heavily towards Scottish origins. Did you find anything specific that points he was actually born in Scotland. I'm really intrigued about that, and would like to know your sources, also what city he was born in. Thank you!
Kindest regards,
Justin

I posted that message when I was a freshman in college (I'm now a senior), and I had completely forgotten about it until I received notice that you had replied. Since that time, my grandfather has given me a wonderful, well-done book that traces our Lewton line back to Issac Lewton --your Issac Lewton, I would assume. In fact, based on your birthdate and birthplace, you and I might be closer relatives than either of us initially thought.

My grandfather, Richard Lewton, son of Carl and Jesse Lewton, grandson of Elmer and Mina Lewton (that's all I remember without the book) was born in Lisbon, Ohio about 1929. The exact date is escaping my memory. His brothers are Harold and Ralph and his sister is Jean. Richard and his wife, Wanda Karrer, live in Massilon, Ohio.

Do any of these names ring a bell with you?

:) Jenni

You are in luck. The Allen Co. Library in Ft. Wayne, one of the largest genealogical libraries in the U.S., has a copy of my first edition (1974) and I'm quite sure the 2nd edition (1984). If it does not have the latter, let me know. There are many relatives in the Huntington and Decatur areas who have copies of the book. I am gone now until the 24th. AG

I'm trying to piece together as much as possible about the Lewtons. My moms maiden name is Lewton. I have been told that the family has been researched and documented, but nobody seems to have any information. I live in Warsaw, IN. My grandfather is John Lewton son of Floyd Wilson Lewton. Thanks for any help and let me know about $.

Let me know what you desire and I will tell you how much $ to send. I will be away, however, much of the rest of the month, on two different trips. Thanks. Allen

Yes, ALL those names ring bells! Your grandad, Richard, is my first cousin. My Dad, Leland Leonard Lewton, was Carl's "kid brother." Two other brothers were Glen, who had a daughter Lenore, and Orin, whom I last saw in 1983. What an amazing guy. When he was 83, we went jogging on the beach and he ran circles around me. He was well up in his 80s when he married for the second time. I really loved my Uncle Carl and Aunt Jesse, and Icousin Jean married Evan Evans (a name I couldn't forget). I remember Harold and Ralph, too, but not as well as Richard, who was closer to my age. The last time I saw all of them was at a Lewton family reunion (1943? 44?) at the farm of Uncle Will & Aunt Iva Morris. More soon...about the Lewton book.

Remeber at the outset I mentioned that I had a lot of info on the Lewtons. Well, if you could lift the fingerprints off your copy of the book, I'll bet you'd find my fingerprints all over it.

In 1983 Uncle Orin drove down to Florida to see me. Yes, he drove all the way down and back all by himself, and he was 83 years old in '83. Well, he brought a copy of the Lewton book, and since we both thought it was out of print, we xeroxed the whole book. He said he would give it to me, but he couldn't since it wasn't his; he had borrowed it from Uncle Carl.

I'll just bet that your great-grandfather, Carl, gave that book to your Grandpa and you said he gave the Lewton Book to you, so isn't it the same book???!!
