Hi Keith:

My Great Grandfather was James Alfred Leyte who married Elizabeth Ann Peckford in Fogo in 1867. James and Elizabeth Ann moved out of the Fogo area in the 1880s and became one of the first families to settle the town of Big Burnt Bay (now called Lewisporte). Through the years our last name was changed to Layte.

There is a story in my family that three brothers came over from England and settled in the Fogo area. Two brothers stayed in Fogo and the other brother migrated to the Avalon Pennisula or Trinity. Appartently his last name was changed to Laite. I was originally tracing Thomas, Frederick, and James from the Fogo area until I heard about this brother who migrated. I was thinking that my Great Grandfather James was one of the orginal brothers who came over from England, however, now I believe that he may have been born in Newfoundland in the 1840s, son of one of the original Brothers. The name George Leyte has popped up in my research as well, and he may have been a brother to Thomas, Frederick, and James. My belief is all the Leytes, Laytes, Laites, in Newfoundland are related and descended from those three brothers.

Have you heard of this story? I too have done lot's of research on the Leyte's of Fogo, however, I can't seem to find the original three brothers who came to Newfoundland I'm assuming in the late 1700s or early 1800s.

It would be great to hear from you.

Robert Layte
