The original pronounciation in French would sound a lot like "Lumadue" (the "H" is silent"). These variants come when records need to be written, and the subject person is not literate. The transcribing person then spells the name phonetically. Since spelling was not standardized until the time of the first Webster's dictionary, all such spelling should be respected equally.
