Wealthy Townsend (ca. 1808-alive 1885) was the daughter of Asa Townsend (1774-alive 1854) and Huldah Barstow who left Massachusetts for first Lower Canada and then Upper Canada in about 1802. They lived in Etobicoke Twp., near what became Toronto until 1812 when they moved to Westminster Township near what is now London, Ontario. The Townsends relocated to the Ausable River in what later became Bosanquet and Williams Townships in Lambton and Middlesex Counties respectively in 1822 and remained there until the 1850s. Wealthy probably had a brother or half-brother named Ezekiel (ca 1821-1862).

Hi, These are my GGGG grandparents. I do have the line of all the Libby's from that point that are listed. I did hit a brick wall on this though, as I am not able to find any siblings of this John Libby and Philippa Maynard has a brother John Maynard as of the death of her husband, but some of the sites I looked into does not list any siblings of Philippa. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Wow!! What a quick reply! Thank you.
This offers new information as well as new leads. My goal is to contact a family member who 1) may have informal stories to share and 2) pictures that would add to the story. Is the source and date of this Libby information known? If not, I will nonetheless pursue the new leads.

Hopefully I am not asking too much: Does the Libby Association also have information on Dr. Harold Earl Libby (1920-1973)? Harold's grandfather was a brother to Walter's father. Although Harold was not a native to Lincoln, he practiced in Lincoln, Maine from 1937 to 1946 and qualifies for inclusion in the same, next publication of the society.

Again, thank you very much. Each puzzle piece helps. - Dottie

Paul Everard Libby - California, China, Oregon, Washington

Paul Everard Libby was born January 1, 1922 in Los Angeles, the second child of Lucille Tretheway and Dr. Walter E. Libby, missionaries in China.
Paul married Mary Elizabeth Acheson, had children who were born in Salem, Oregon, and settled in Portland, Oregon.
He retired from the State Highway Department in 1977 and was listed in Public Records as late as 2008, an indication he may still be alive.

The Lincoln (Maine) Historical Society's book committee would like to contact Paul, descendents, extended family or friends to better complete the biography of Dr. Walter E. Libby, a Lincoln native, in their next publication.
The lives of Libby's five children after China and their children would be frosting on the cake.
Thank you.

Hi Allen
I almost forgot about searching for the book, Forests and Clearings that you mentioned.
In your message of April 8, you mentioned the marriage of Lelia Libby to James McFadgean and thought the marriage to David Curtis could have been a second marriage.
Today, I received the marriage information from the 1881 Methodist Church,Sherbrooke,Québec for two Libby sisters who married the 10 November 1881. There is Liley M. Libby, dau.of James and Sarah who married James McFadgean and Lelia S. Libby, dau.of James and Sarah who married David Curtis the same day. Their brother, Freeman J. Libby was a witness.
As I thought, there were two sisters, possibly twins since their names are so similar.

Hopefully one of these days I will find a copy of the book you mentioned.

I thought you would appreciate hearing about these marriages.

Sandy
Hi Rayanne

Thank you for the info.

My line goes through Stephen Richard Libby and Mary Elizabeth Mowatt.
Stephen and your Asa were brothers.

Stephen and Mary Mowatt had a daughter Ida Etta Libby who married Denis McGrath. Canadian archives have McGraw as name.
Ida and Denis moved to Lowell, Mass. in 1885 from St. Stephen, NB. They had a son Walter born 15 Oct 1888 in Lowell. He married Sarah Kelleher and had William Denis McGrath 20 Oct. 1916 (my father). He married Rose Eva Levesque in Lowell, Ma. They had me Joan McGrath in 1945. I have a twin sister June. I married Roger Landry in 1966.
This is our connection to each other.

I'm having trouble with the Mowatt line. Canadian records have McGraw for name, not McGrath. Records were spelled back then as pronounciation.
Stay in touch, Joan

Hello Sandy,
Is there any chance that your David Curtis was Leila Libby’s SECOND husband ? ? ? ?
If so, I may have found data on her previous to that possible 2nd marriage. ? ? ? ?

In “The Libby Family in America” books, there is a Lelia Libby, born 24 Dec 1863. In the books, it is unclear whether she was born in the USA or Canada. The first book (on page 136) states that her father lived in Derby Line, VT (that is in Orleans Co.) for 10 years, but doesn’t specify when. He then moved, with no date stated, to “Libbytown”, Barnston, Stanstead, Quebec.
The second book also doesn’t state her place of birth.
“RootsWeb” and the LDS IGI have information stating that she was born in Derby Line, VT. I didn’t see any sign of the source of the submitter’s data.
“Forests and Clearings”, a book about the history of Stanstead, Quebec, has info on her parents, but nothing on her or her siblings. That book also confirms where her father lived but, also, doesn’t say when.
The 2nd (later) “Libby Family in America” book has data (on pages 18 & 60) showing her birth and her marriage to a James McFadgean. They had 3 children – Flora, James Jr., & Douglas.
None of the 3 books tell any more about this couple or their children.
This Lelia is in the 1881 Barnston, Quebec, Canada Census. At that time she was living with her parents.

In the “Forests and Clearings” book, there is a David Curtis listed in the Index. But, there is no page number given! ? ? ? ? So, one would have to read that book very slowly and carefully page-by-page to determine if there is really any information on him somewhere in the book or if it was an error.

So, we don’t know if the Lelia in the Libby books is your Leila or not.
But, you now have a possibility to chase.
I don’t have access to Canadian records other than the 1881 Census data on the LDS site.
If you can access Canadian data, try to find the death date for James McFadgean. If that occurred before 1901, then the Leila (Libby) Curtis listed in that Census may actually be Lelia (Libby) McFadgean in a 2nd marriage to your David Curtis. ? ? ? ?

Good luck chasing this!
I just wish that I could have been able to help you more!
Sincerely,
Allen E.
Hi ,

It is good to find another relative. First on the information I do have. The Hunnewell's

Johnathan Hunnewell, Born 13 Jun 1805 Durham Me.Died: 9 Nov 1884, Alexander Twp, Washington Co. Me. Buried: Alexander Town Cem. Married: 16 May 1829 Charlotte Co. New Brunswick

Susannah Hall (Hill) Born: 30 Jul 1811 St.Stephen parish, Charlotte Co. NB.
Note: There is a Susannah Hunnewell Buried beside Asa Libby in the Old Ridge Catholic Cem. St.Stephen, Char Co. I couldn't figure out why they are buried so close to each other. I thought it was the mother of Mary Elizabeth Hunnewell( Susannah), but I would imagine that this person should be buried near Johnathan Hunnewell. This must become clearer. She may even be another sister to Mary Elizabeth, this puzzle I need to figure out.
Children:Hunnewell

F) Susannah Rebecca: 3oct1830 St. Stephen NB
M) Andrew : 9Dec1832 " "
F)Mary Elizabeth : 28Jan1835 " " Spouse: Asa Libby, Married: 7Oct1859.
M) Calvin Jellison : 23Feb1837 " "
F) Zilpha Ann : 21May1839 calais Washington, Me. Spouse: Charles W.Libby Married: Calais Washington, Me.( 1901 Census #1843,522)
M) David Ebenezer :29may1842, Calais Me.
F) Diathna Eldna :5Apr1844 , Clais Me.
F) Elizabeth Caroline: 10Mar1847, Calais Me.
M) Benjamin Harris : 23Dec1848, Calais Me.
M) Charles Sidney : 1Feb1852, Calais Me.

Susannah Hall (Hill) Father: Martin Jellison Hall Born 11Feb1782, St. Stephen NB. ( this is 2nd Husband of mother)
Mother : Elizabeth Libby born: may 1783 died 1878
1st Husband is ? Emerson
I do have charles W. and Zilpha's info and one of the children John Harris Libby. so if you desire it let me know.

The name Sedgefield: came from online, the New Brunswick provicial Archives and the 1871 Census.

Stephen R. Libby Born 1846 according to the census: Spouse: Mary E. Mowatt.
Children: David Sedgefield Libby 4 May 1872 (St.Stephen )
Fred Marks Libby 24 Jan 1878 ( st. Stephen )
Ida Etta 19 May 1866 (Bay Road )
Susan M. 4 years in 1871
David L. 11mon (1871)
I would guess that the Sedgefield comes from Mary Mowatt's lines.
You mentioned James and Sarah Dorothy Logan (Dodgeridge) their children:

Bertha Ann Libby,Clara May Libby, Eldon Benneth Libby, Georgianna Libby, Henry Herbert Libby, Ida Blanche Libby and Lottie Estella Libby
Lottie Estella Libby has a girl Irene May Libby (father unknown )
I know this is alot of information. I hope this helps. But I have come to appreciate that the more you know that more you don't know.
How are you connected to me again so I better understand?
Rayanne.

No Jennifer..There is a Family there in Maine which is on our eastern tip which came from Belgium back in the early 1900's. Which part of France are you in ? My GGGrandfather was born there. It must be nice there. I hope some day to go there and get some pictures of the Bruyere castle and the other things that Bruyere families made, owned or ruled. It would be nice to see some of them and which families hold them. Would you happen to have the different Coat-of-Arms there that the Bruyere family holds.??? .

So you are on the Eastern side..I heard it is very prety there. I always wanted to go to the Loire; The Grand Hotel Perrache is where I want to go for my wedding. As for Chateau Bruyere, I heard they were trying to sell it. There are many famous Bruyere citizens that came out of France as Jean De La Bruyere who was the infamous Moralist, Essayist and Richard Bruyere, Duke of Bruyeres born in the 13th Century who built the Bruyere Castle that is only remains today. I do my history:-) I resemble Jean Bruyere as the high forehead and the robust look; it is funny how we look so much alike. lolol. The posture he bore is a trademark for his stubbornness that also runs in the Bruyere genes. Maybe someday we will find the connection we are looking for.

Hello Allen

Thank you for your reply. Today I received information about the marriage of Lelia Libby and David Curtis.
The marriage was the 10 November, 1881 in North Hatley,Québec. At the time of this marriage,Lelia was about 17 or 18 years old.I would think this was her first marriage. Perhaps there were two Lelia's. Her father,James Libby was living in Libbytown,Barnston,as he is mentioned in the church record of death for David Curtis in 1902.
I would like to find a copy of the book you mentioned,
Forests and Clearings so I can read about the history of Stanstead.
Thank you again for your information. I found it very helpful.

Sandy

Hi Allen
I know how you can get the 1901 census for Canada. Type in Automatedgenealogy.com. Then click on automatedgenealogy.com/censussurnamelist. The next page will say Automated Genealogy, click on census indices 1901 (upper right corner), then click which province you want. Then put the surname in the surname search box and click go..You should be able to find some information.
I put in the surname (Libby) and found James Libby, wife Sarah and a daughter May L. Libby and two grandchildren, James McFadzeon and Vernus T. McFadzeon in the same household. I'm not sure if the birth mother is May or perhaps another daughter. I know it's not Lelia,as she married David Curtis in November 1881 and they were married when David died in 1902...
You may be able to access the 1906 and 1911 census.
I hope you're able to find some information.
Good luck.
Sandy

David Curtis and Lelia Libby's daughter, Sarah Bertha Curtis married Godfrey Beland on the 29th April 1903. It says Fiche,Québec. I'm not sure where Fiche is. I have heard of a Fitchbay. It could be a misspelling of the name. I'll have to look into this.
Thank you.
Sandy

Sharon,
I have not been active on my search for a few years, but we need to talk at the next reunion and share. I was in D.C. a few years ago and found some information on another relative of the libby's. We shall talk soon. I am going to New York with Jimmy for the weekend. If you ever want to do trips with us, let me know. We are taking in a few shows and enjoying life, as you know it goes by fast. Love ya, Janette
