I suggest we look at sharing emails. mine is lenlidbetter@gmail.com.

I have been fairly active on ancestry this year. As well as tacking my history back to the 17th century I have resolved a few family legends and tracked down a few relatives I never knew previously.

look forward to hearing from you

Len

Hi Pam
Just noticed your message on here to my mother (Mary Lidbetter). My mother now has dementia and is in a nursing home. I have the family tree she did and although I have not really looked much at the Packer side of it, I would be interested in hearing what information you have on it. I have heard about the family connection to the wreck of the Dunbar. But without going through her notes which are stored in her old house a long way from me I could not give much detail on it. I look forward to hearing from you. I can look up on the tree I have if it will be on benefit.

Regards
Philip Lidbetter

James' father was William and he came from Pulborough, I have not been able to find him in the 1861 or 1851 census. Has anyone else researched this line? If so I would be glad of any info. Thanks.
Yes. I did a quick look for his name online found nothing. I think the Yeoman thing came up in his will. I'll have go check the will. I wonder if it is to do with the Catholic/protestant changes. Interesting as many Lidbetters ended up strong Protestants church wardens etc. Yet Queen Mary being Catholic.

There must be lot more stuff if we knew where to look. Obviously they were close to the palace. What was the guy they were supposed to have killed, I cannot find anything about him aside from his name. If young William became a Yeoman to the queen, there has to be more to this tale.

All the info I have on the Henry viii story is: .
WARRANT TO CHRISTOPHER MOORE, ESQ., Sheriff of the county of Sussex, to deliver to " Katheryn Howarde, one of oure quene's maidens, all the goods, cattail movable and unmovable, fermes, leasses for terme of lyffand yere, dettes, condemnacions," &c., forfeited to the King by William Lidbeter the elder, and William Lidbeter the younger, for the murder of Richard Bolockherde. Dated, May 10, 32 Henry VIII (1540). Signature of King Henry VIII.

Of course, Kathryn later married Henry. Seems our ancestor must have been both wealthy and politically stupid. Wonder if they were set up? I have been trying to track other references but without success so far, cheers, Len

Hi,

Thank you for your message. I am trying to trace my grandfather's details his name was Frank b1905. His father was James (Moley) Lidbetter b circa1853. The name has been mispelled on the 1911 census and is listed as Leadbitter. I believe that James was married to Alice b circa 1865.

James and Alice had 3 children Frank (1905) Ernest (1909) and Alice 1901. Frank was married to Gladys Adsett. Ernest known as Trub was married to Ivy ?

Any help would be fantastic.

Kind Regards

Les

Hi KiwiLen

Very interested in your Lidbetter research have just added John and Avice into my tree. They are what I have come to call the "Pulborough" Lidbetters (actually Lidbiter at least at one stage). John's father was John born about 1717 and mother was Elizabeh Marden.
I have some interesting Information have one about the Quaker Lidbetters (1800) and one of them hitting a future (for them) king of England. Interested in your Henry 8th story. My mother had worked on it (but now has dementia) the tree I have goes back to the 1400's though a number of assumptions which need a lot of checking.
just put a message here.

West Sussex is one of the major areas for Lidbetters there is about 30 variations of the name. Some of the areas in West Sussex which have had large numbers include Bramber, Pulborough, Steyning. I might be able to help you link your tree in if you can get it back to the late 1800's or at least give me an area. My mother Mary (now with dementia started the tree I am now working on going back to the 1400's trying to get a few my branches on it. I have just found the link for the Pulborough Lidbetters onto this one.

Lidbetter

Hi, my family are Sussex Lidbetters. Seem to have been centred around Brighton. My Grandfather was Cecil Clifford Lidbetter and I would appreciate some info about him. I have traced the tree back to about 16th century where we had a spot of bother with Henry 8th. There are a few variations in spelling along the way. Most of the other Lidbetter lines I have followed seem to go back to John Lidbeter and Avice Hitchcock in the 1750s. Happy to collaborate with others.

Hi,
I live in Melbourne, Australia. My paternal grand mother's maiden was Staples. One of the Staples, an Ellen Louisa Staples married a Thomas Lidbetter born about 1843 in Brighton, Sussex. I am tracing this line to fill in the gaps. Not sure if connected to your Lidbetters but being from Sussex more than like ly connected. I like Sussex. I spent a few Months in Eastbourne a few years back.
Any way this Thomas Lidbetter was a captain. My family in Australia are all from Hobart, Tasmania and this is where Ellen Louisa Staples was born and met Thomas, though they sailed to New Zealand and they married there. They went on to India where a doughter was born and then back to England where they eventually died. They were apparenly Quakers and one of their sons a Sidney Thomas Lidbetter was the head of a Quaker college Called "Ackworth'.
If any of above connected to your line would love to hear from you. thanks, cheers Vince Downey
