The Liddell's of Baltimore Maryland

My father was Vernon Grahm Liddell born July 11, 1901. in Baltimore Maryland. His father was John Dawson Liddell also born in Maryland.
My father had no siblings. His mother was Lena Groff;not sure of the spelling. She died long before I was born. I grew up in NJ where my father moved and married for the second time to my Mother Doris Pither. His first wife was named Margaret and they had two daughters; Maryann and Caroline who are deceased. I just started looking into this and this screen popped up. Thought we have a connection in the past. My father who died in 1961 always told me my hearitage was Scotland and England but I really am not sure. Anything you may know about the liddells also spelled I am told many different ways in years gone by I would certaintly appreciate. Thank you Gail Liddell

Hi Mandy

Not sure if you have this but these were the death notices for your g grandfather John Liddell.

Death notice from the Argus, Sat 27 Feb 1932:
LIDDELL -On the 21st February at Moliagul, John, dearly beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Liddell, loved father of James, John, Janet, William, Thomas, Elizabeth (deceased), Mary (deceased), Harry, Margaret, Christina, Grace, and Joseph (deceased), aged. 95 years. -The long day closes. (West Australian and New Zealand papers please copy).

Personal notice in the Argus, Tues 23 Feb 1932:
Mr. John Liddell, sen., the oldest resident of Moliagul, the mining township where the "Welcome Stranger" nugget was found in 1869, died on Sunday on his 95th birthday. A native of Tasmania, he was brought to Victoria when three weeks old. His wife died 30 years ago. He has left four sons and five daughters. He was a miner.

His obituary:
Death of the district’s oldest resident, Mr. John Liddell
Moliagul.
It is with regret that we announce the Death of Mr. John Liddell Sen. which occurred at his Home at Moliagul on Sunday morning on his 95th birthday. Mr. Liddell was born in Launceston, but spent almost the whole of his life in Victoria, his parents having come to this State when he was three weeks old. His father, Mr. Capt. James Donaldson Liddell, was a Native of Scotland, and as Captain of one of the Ships trading between England and Australia brought several Consignments of convicts to Tasmania. His last was composed entirely of women, and so dissatisfied was he with his task that he gave up the business, and afterwards followed ordinary trade channels. Later he had as passengers the original Henty family, which after spending some time in Tasmania, removed to Victoria, taking up Residence at Portland. Mr John Liddell had a lively recollection of the late Mr. Crowley, of Goldsborough, who turned the first sod with a plough in Victoria on the Henty Holding.
He spent some years at sea with his Father, but when in 1851 gold was discovered in Victoria, he went to the rush at Castlemaine, where he had his first experience of mining. From there he visited the rushes at Bendigo, Ballarat, Korong, Inglewood, Avoca, Moliagul, Dunolly, Maryborough, Alma, etc. Mr. Liddell claimed that he and his party sank the first shaft at ”White Hill” Bendigo, and obtained from the Claim 62lb. weight of gold. Freight at that time to Bendigo cost ₤100 pounds a ton. His largest nugget, 15lbs, he obtained at Alma. He left Ballarat for Bendigo three days before the Eureka Stockade Riot. Journeying across country from Korong to Avoca, he and his Brother (James) climbed Mount Moliagul to obtain a view of the country, no gold then had been discovered at Moliagul. Descending into the valley on the south they came upon two Prospectors, one of whom was Mr. Leck, well known as a large storekeeper at Moliagul, and still later as a Partner in the well known firm of Leck and Craig, Wedderburn.
Some time later a rush broke out at Old Dunolly, and he returned to find the previously Virgin Flats a hive of industry. Chinamen were there by their thousands, and Blacks were very plentiful in the vicinity. From that time up to the present, with the exception of very short intervals, Mr. Liddell had remained a resident of Moliagul, maintaining a full share of the enthusiasm which seems to be an essential part of a Miner’s makeup. He had the privilege of handling the famous Welcome Stranger nugget after its discovery by Messrs Deason and Oates. This was found near the surface and on a site where there had been many Tents.
Mr. Liddell was remarkably vigorous and sound in body. His wife died 36 years ago. Since then he had been cared for by an unmarried daughter. The Family comprises five sons and four daughters: James, John, William, Thomas, Harrison, Janet, Margaret, Christina, Grace. The cause of death was Senile Decay. His Father died at 72 years, and his Mother at 56.
The Funeral took place yesterday afternoon at Moliagul, and was largely attended, among those present being Crs J.J. and T.F. O’Brien. The Pall Bearers were four sons of the Deceased. The Rev. W.T. Lapthorne conducted the Service, and Messrs Stafford & Sons, Dunolly carried out the Funeral Arrangements.
From The Dunolly and Betbetshire Express

:-)
I am trying to find an ancestor for a friend of mine. The lady I am trying to find is Ethyl Viola Liddell. I believe she was born in Mississippi and lived in Texas. She married Ben Hugh Brady. Their son was Watt Liddell Brady and father of my friend. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Through our Family Bible, marriage & death certificates, we have traced our family back to James G. Liddell born Feb 14, 1854 in Glengarry Ontario Canada. His parents were William Liddell & his mother Elizabeth McEwen (maiden name), unfortunately we have no further information on the dates or where they were born. Where was Daniel Liddell (b 1850) born, what was his parents name? In 3 weeks we will be in Scotland again, hoping to confirm the direct family connection/immigration from Scotland to Glengarry Ontario. Look forward to hearing from you, hope we can help each other.

Regards Jim Liddell

I am interested in your source of the maiden name of Susan E. LIDDELL, who appears to have died between 1922 and 1930 in Baltimore. Her husband Robert T. LIDDELL appears to have died between 1910 and 1920, per census records. Their daughter Emeline married George T. BIDEN and is the great-grandmother of Senator Joe BIDEN, Democratic VP candidate.

I am not related to this family, but enjoy researching the ancestry of famous figures, thus is how I came across your post. I was just sent the obit for Mary Emily BIDEN which gives her parents as the late Robert T. LIDELL and Susan E. LIDELL.
Here is an email which was forwarded to me in 2003:

From: Muriel Horn
Date: Sunday, November 02, 2003 10:19:35 PM
Subject: Thomas Liddell and Eliza D Martin
Eliza D Martin's parents were William Martin, born in GA and Jane Unknown Surname born in SC. They were in the Louisville, Winston County, MS census from 1850 to 1880 at the minimum - I haven't got that far checking. She had two sisters: Mary J Martin who married John W. T. Curtis and Roxie (Roxy - listed both ways) who married a Unknown Comer - and had a daughter Ider J Comer and was living with her parents in the 1880 census.
Mary J Martin was my ggrandmother and I have done considerable research to find her - found these in passing and thought it might help you. There are so many Martins. Also found a Richard Martin who was 74 in the 1860 census in Louisville, Winston County, MS that I thought might be related to them - perhaps an uncle or father because William's father is listed as coming from SC in the 1880 census and Richard lists his homestate as SC.
Thank you for sending me a response. Actually, I wrote that e-mail. Based on other researchers, I now believe my grandmother to have been a Holsonback who married a Holsonback originally, and then she married my gggrandfather William Martin. Since that time, I beleive I have also found out the identity of Roxie Martin Comer's husband. I beleive she may have remarried, but can't find her or her daughter after 1880 census. No one living has been able to enlighten me either. I'll just keep looking.

I was brought up to believe that my grandmother, Marjorie Alicia Freeman was directly related to Alice Liddell. I haven't managed to prove it.
Her mother was Rose Liddell bn 1873 at Stratford Essex, her father was William Liddell, born abt 1843 at Gibraltar, a mariner and later, a labourer.

I'm sure the Rev Dodgson who befriended young Alice, was living at Oxford, or thereabouts. They would have led quite different lives to our Liddel's in South Essex.
I suppose they may have been cousins or 2nd cousins?
Julian Lovegrove

PS I hope someone finds this interesting?

Jim, I had a heck of a time tracing my mothers family back (given not much information before she died) My grandmother Virginia was a Liddell (her father was James Henry Liddell b 1881, son of Daniel Liddell b 1850) attached to the John/James/Moses Liddell family. I have been so excited to have dug down deep enough to find names that I could fill in the gaps I had.
Hi Cherilyn,
I just came across this message and thought that I would write. You may get notification that I have written to you on the Mayne page. I wrote there as for some reason when I first tried to respond to this message I was taken to Ancestry Italy and couldn't understand the sign in instructions as they were set out differently. Now I have finally managed to find everthing in English so here is the message I have left in the other spot.

A cousin of mine has just asked us if we could find out something about the other side of his family. His mother was a daughter of Andrew & Ada. He has a family story about the family coming out to New Zealand. However, while looking about the internet I found information saying that Andrew and his sisters were brought out to Tasmania by their father and stepmother and that Andrew came to NZ later. My cousin says that Andrew lived to 100 and this ties in with him being born abt 1841/42 in Paisley which links him to this Tasmanian family. Does the info you have show who Andrew's parents were and how long he had been in NZ when he married and whether he had been on Australia first?

Sorry to ask so much. If you ever need anything looked up here in New Zealand, just ask. My email address is

ruthwatson@xtra.co.nz

Looking forward to your reply

Fraser Watson
Dunedin, NZ
I am a direct descendant of Moses Liddell. My line continues from Buena Vista Liddell who ended up in Alabama. I have been collecting all the data I can find if you have anything you would share I would love to talk to you. I do have copies of all the wills from NC and I know where Isabella lived in GA. I am going to Abbeville to see what I can find in a couple of months. Hope to hear from you.

James Gordon Liddell was born Feb 14, 1854 in Glengarry Ontario Canada, his marriage certificate shows his father was William Liddell & mother Elizabeth McEwen. We are trying to find out when & where William Liddell was born & the date & place of his death. Also we are trying to see if he is a direct descendant of Captain Andrew Liddell from the Eighth Regiment, Glengarry Light Infrantry who died in the battle of Fort George at Niagara-on-the-Lake during May 1813.

His name was Samuel Witherspoon Liddell, and he was born 02/02/1834 in Alabama. Do you happen to have a Samuel in your information? Thanks!

Pat Liddell Hartnett

You could try the Scotland People website: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

All archival information from old parish registers etc, on line, no subscription fee, but it is a fee for service, only problem might be if they weren't part of the established churches..I've used it regularly with great success
Coincidentally, my paternal grandmother is a Liddell, descended from another James Liddell and Janet (Jessie) Smith who were married in Glasgow about 1840

Liddells - Blacks from Abbeville, SC to Winston Co., MS

Hello! I am hoping that someone might have and be willing to share any information on slaves and free Black Liddells. I am looking for any records that might list the names of the Black Liddells that were in Abbeville, SC with the James Liddell family. I believe that they also may have lived in Alabama for a while with them. Ultimately, they all ended up in Winston County, MS. On the 1870 Census my gggreat-grandparents M. (believe it was for Moses) and Eliza Liddell lived in the same area with Eleb and his wife Catherine Liddell. My gggg-grandfather, Bailey Liddell was listed as being born in Africa in 1790, but once in America lived in South Carolina possibly with James Liddell.

Thanks!

Brenda Smith
