Re: LIDDY, IRELAND AND AUSTRALIA

Hi,

My name is Duane Liddy and I live in Northern Australia, my grandfather was Thomas Liddy (born around 1930) and his father was Patrick Liddy. His brother Lawrence also migrated. They migrated to the Northern Territory after being in Queensland. In the Northern Territory they drove cattle and owned many cattle stations. During their droving, my grandfather met my grandmother who was a local aboriginal women, they went on to have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. Liddy's now make up a large portion of the australian aboriginal population. I am very interested in tracing back the step's of Patrick's father who I believe is the original James Liddy who migrated from the USA. I am also very interested in talking to some family in Ireland. If I find out any more info, il'l post it. Thanks

Looking for information or the descendants of Kathleen Downey and Christy Liddy

Kathleen’s parents were Patrick (John) Downey b 14th January 1872 in the Parish of St Johns, Limerick, Ireland. Patrick’s wife was Bridget Norton born about 1872 in Ireland. They married in 1895 in Massachusetts; USA They lived in Boston City, Suffolk, Massachusetts. The children born in Massachusetts were – Catherine 1895, William 1898, Martin 1901 & Mary 1906. Patrick & Bridget show on the 1900 & 1910 census results. Also on both census returns is Winifred Norton, Bridget’s mother.

The next records we have of Patrick are when he joined the Military in 1914. Patrick’s records show that his dependants were Winifred Norton his mother-in-law and Kathleen (this may be another child or Catherine 1895. Patrick has spelt it Kathleen in his Army application) his daughter he states here that he is a widow. The residential address is given as 36 PENNYWELL, LIMERICK. I do not know what happened to Bridget and the other children born in Massachusetts.

Patrick’s 1914 WW1 pension record shows that he was serving in the CORK RGA REGIMENT NO 614. The 4th May 1916 to 12 May 1918 Patrick served in Malta. Here his dependants in 1918 changed to Ellen Constance Cherrett and daughter Phyllis. On the 31st May 1918 Patrick was sent to India and came back 3rd June 1919.

On the 21st September 1919 Patrick married Ellen Cherrett (Nell) and the residential address was then, Poole Hill, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. Patrick was medically discharged from the army 29th November 1919 and died in 1928 in Southampton.

After Patrick died Ellen married again, Eli Joe Ernest Toms in 1929 and had three more children. None of Patrick’s first children were brought up with the Toms family yet they would have been very small at the time (Phyllis 12, Mary 9, Alys Dorothy 6 and John 4 four years old) so who brought up these children?

Kathleen married Christopher Liddy in 1920 and had a baby Kathleen that died in 1926. On the Electoral Roll for Limerick for 1945 there was another person Christy Liddy that we presume to be another daughter. The addresses we have are 18 Mungret Rd and 36 Pennywell, both in Limerick, Ireland.

Sincerely
Tess Cawley
tesscawley@telkomsa.net
Cape Town
South Africa

Hi,
I was just checking the notices under Liddy when I came upon yours, you posted it a long time ago so you may have all the answers by now, but by coincidance just this morning I was searching for Nelly Wallace famous pantomone dame and music hall singer and I found an Eleanor Liddy, Actress (Nelly's real name) and Em Hy Liddy, Actor listed in 1901 England Census.
My mother's maiden name was Liddy and this week I made contact with a 3rd cousin in Canada who seems to think we have a connection with Nelly but I have no knowledge of this.

My addy is changed and is now kjlid4@yahoo.com My husband's family came to Chatham, Ontario, Canada. We learned his grandfather might have been born in New York. Grandmother born in Ireland (Carney or Karney). Grandfather in Chatham was James Liddy, his father we think was Matthew Liddy. Any help?
I have John Francis, born 1900, Michael Andrew, born 1902, & Charles, born 1904, emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1924, and then travelled at some time to New Jersey, Texas, and Ohio. John married a Winifred O'Hara in NJ in 1928, and died there in 1956.Charles died 1980 in Orange Park,FL and Michael in 1982 in Newark, NJ. These were my great-uncles. The trouble with the Liddys is they weren't very adventureous with names, nearly every branch has a Hugh, an Edward and a James which can make it hard to separate out the various branches. Re: G.Gordon, my aunt told me that he was offered the family farm in Antrim, but wasn't interested, so it was sold to developers.

No ,I live in virginia Beach,Va. My sister and I were born outside Philadelphia,Pa. in the 1940's.Our father William Liddy was born in Hagerstown,Md in 1898. His parents lived in Monroeton,Bradford Co. Pa. We have them from 1850. We can't tell when they came to the US.His grandfather isn't on the 1900 census but his grandmother- Mary- is living in South Waverly Pa. her-obit says NY but tht was not correct. At the time of her death another son James was living with her. I can't bring him forward either.
We have found the name spelled-Liddy, lydia and Lyddy. Now someone has also suggested Luddy as a possible spelling.

Liddy Family of Berne Indiana

His name was Johann Ulrich Luetty and he Americanized this to John W. Liddy. In all likelyhood he was part of the Mennonite community that came to the Berne Indiana area in 1852. He and his wife, Amanda Kemp, had 9 children. The family spread out from Berne to Bluffton and neighboring areas. Many of the children did not stay with the Mennonite faith. Yet the children had large farm families themselves.

I'm seeking photos of any of the family members taken prior to 1910. Doug0206@hotmail.com

Katie, so far I haven't found any of my family in Pa. but that doesn't mean that far back we maybe conected. the tree I have starts with willyam lyddy in scotland in the 1600's. his son john born in the 1700's, his son robert born also in the 1700's and that is when he moved to ireland. his children were robert jr., david, anne, mary, and john all born late 1700's. from there i have my line. an johns family came to north america during the potato famine (1845) and settled in canada then some came to northern ny.
how far back can you go? contact me at smumper@comcast.net.sue

The Liddy's we are reying to find lived in Monroeton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. there also were alot of Liddy's in Chumung Co NY that Sharon v. has traced to Ireland - in Co Clare.Go to the Tice tricounty site and you will find lots of Liddys. So far we can't find a connection to the 2 families.
Our 2 James were born about 1817- in Ireland -our great grandfather and James his son born-1872 in PA- brother to our grandfather Jerimiah..There were several other sons-Michael,John,Thomas, Martin and Patrick on the census. 2 died that we know about. The rest just disappear. It doesn't help that there is no 1890 info. That is an important year for us in several family names. We don't have anyone before 1850- in fact the name was spelled Lydia that year in Bradford ,PA.It was spelled Liddy the next census and Lyddy in 1880. No wonder it it hard to trace people!
James the son was living with his Mom-assume the father has died-in 1900 in South Waverly,Pa. Mary dies in 1905 and Now we can't find James in 1910 or forward.
So far we have no connection to anyone in Canada or other states . Just Pa. Don't even know where or when they came to the US. Any ships info with the Liddy name is nowhere close to our time line.
DO you have any PA family?

We can't go very far. We can't even find where in Ireland they came from. The first Us info is the 1850 Bradford Co, Pa.census. Based on that we assume he was born about 1817. I can't find James Sr. on a ship log to know when he came here. We assume he wasn't married and don't know Mary's maiden name either.
A large # of Liddy's came from Clare- That is the line Sharron V. has traced. As I said the Tice tricounty web page has lots of Liddys. She tells the story that there were 4 brothers-she can only trace 3. Our James fits the ages of her 3 but we can't confirm any connection.Check out that site. It is a good one.If I find any older info I will post. Thanks.

LIDDY/LIDDIARD/LIDAY

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to continue my research for LIDDY/LIDDIARD/LIDAY.

I would be particularly interested in information regarding the ancestors and descendants of an Ann Liddy/Liddiard/Liday, who married a Henry Sutton, born 1801 in London, England, died 1886, in Camperdown, Sydney, Australia on 28 September,1833 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. This couple had a family of 11 children. I have their names as well.

It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the LIDDY/LIDDIARD/LIDAY name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone. .
I've just remembered, some time in the 1960's I visited my great aunts who lived on a farm somewhere near Lough Neagh, and I can remember playing with my mother's cousins Gerry & Catherine, who were the same age as me. Do you think that could be you and your brother? My mother & I are called Moya, do you remember anyone of that name?

They are the branch that stayed in Ireland, while brothers & sisters moved all over. If the RootsWeb is the right lineage (and it does appear to be) I've been lucky in that he is the oldest son of an oldest son etc... Don't know how true it is, but my aunt told me that G. Gordon Liddy is a cousin. I'm now in Florida, and I was pleased to see that there is a branch of the Liddy family here. Will have to get to Palm Beach and find the graveyard mentioned!

I don't think there's enough paper to make a tree for my branch of the Liddys, they appear to be quite prolific, having an average of 12 children each, my mother was one of 14, her parents had approx 80 grandchildren. This branch of the family is from County Antrim. I found some good information on this site, I've got back to 1791. Quite amazed, really.

Through the RootsWeb site I've managed to trace back "my" Liddy family to 1791, where the last name suddenly turns to Luddy! Just more confusion!

My great-grandmother was a sister to Nellie (Walsh) Mulray. According to my mother, Nellie had a son named Joseph who played football at Villanova University, practiced law with an office in Media,Pa. It does look like we are of the Walsh ancestry and i look forward to hearing from you. Theresa
