I do not believe the Mabel Croson living with the Liggetts in the 1920 census is Nell. Birthplaces of parents are basically unknown and that doesn't jibe, also age does not fit Nell who was born in Jan. 24, 1892 in Kittitas Co.

Keep on seeking as do I.

Revae

Re: General Hunter Liggett

Hello Joe:

My name is Pat, and my husband is Bill. I have been doing genealogy for our various family lines for over a decade. I have a John Liggett, born about 1751, married to a Mary Shields in November 1772 (found in a listing of Early Pennsylvania marriages). With your ancestor being named Shields Liggett, it does seem to make some sense that you might be related to these original Liggetts. I do not have a daughter, Mariah, listed as a child of John and Mary Shields Liggett, but I cannot vouch for the early records --they were sent to me by another Liggett descendant years ago.

My husband's family descends from John/Mary Liggett's youngest son, Samuel Liggett, born about 1789, died before 1850. Samuel's son William was the father of my husband's grandmother. Samuel's son James was the father of Hunter Liggett. Thus, I can make the connection for my husband to Hunter Liggett. My husband is a first cousin twice removed to the General.

We have never found any connection to the Liggett Myers tobacco people either.

Send me your email address and I'll write to you there rather than constantly going back and forth onn this list.

1920, Jan 7 Federal Census State of Washington, Walla Walla County, City of Walla Walla Lists Mabel Croson Divorced living at home with Charles W and Sarah Liggett. I am making a stab that maybe the Nell M is Mabel. Apparently she got married between 1910 and 1920 based the the federal census. I could not find any records supporting marriage. I would be interested to hear what you find out. My e-mail is kelsey001@earthlink.net

Dave

My great-grandfather was Shields Liggett of Upshur County, West Virginia. I have had a hard time finding out who his father was. Some say John but the dates do not match. John Liggetts wife was Mary Shields. So this makes sense but I have seen where John dies before Shiields birth date.

Others in my family say that we are related to Hunter Liggett but they have no evidence earlier than his father and mother.

My Liggett line is
Shields Liggett
Mariah Liggett married George Marion Williams
Marion Williams married Helen Grabouski
Joe Williams--me

I also have John Edmund Liggett's family history (Liggett and Myer Tobacco). His family line does not cross mine.

I have some information concerning my Liggett line that I am willing to share. Can you help me with Hunter Liggetts?

Thank you

I'm researching my husband's family. His great-grandparents, John/Eoghan and Rose/Roisin Doherty (she was a Doherty/Docherty too), emigrated from Buncrana via Londonderry to Johnstown, Renfrewshire, Glasgow, in the late 1890s, where they raised their family: Philip, Edward (husband's grandfather), Patrick, John, Bridget, and Catherine. All but Catherine were born in Ireland. John, we believe, had a foundry.

Also interested in any info on Barrs from Donegal and Glasgow.

Many of them fled to Liverpool during the Potato famine in the 1840s.

I would be very interested in a link back to Scotland, as this may provide a link to my branch of the Liggett family.

My Barrs were born in the small town of Rathfriland, but I don't know whether the Liggets were also from there. Both the Barrs and Liggets seem to have been Presbyterian.

Hope this gives you some clues - to connect or eliminate. Good luck in your searches.

Vanette
