I'm looking for information related to Robert Lightbody, born circa 1841 in CO. Down Ireland. He moved to Liverpool and married Sarah Lightbody (nee Cunningham) and they had upwards of ten children, including their youngest, my great-grandfather Alfred Isaac Lightbody.

Specifically, I'm looking to find Robert's parents. I'm having trouble finding Robert before 1881, when he was listed as living in his mother-in-laws house in Liverpool.

The 1886 Bangor Directory listed John Lightbody as proprietor of a grocery shop in Main St. It was still there in the 1950's and they had an adjoining fish and chip shop.
Most of Main St. was blown up by the I.R.A. during the recent troubles and many businesses never reopened. Currently Main St. is mostly commercial institutions with a small mall running off it. John Lightbody was listed as a tea and offee merchant, general grocer and provision curer. Also meal, flour and bran stores. We used to get most of our groceries from them until they went out of business. I think they still traded as John Lightbody and Sons but do not remember which family member ran the business. There are likely descendants still in Bangor who might be listed at bt.com Lindsay was a well known name in the area and Bangor Abbey graveyard has seven Lindsay gravestones. I don't see anything to connect the deceased with the Lightbodys. Most came from Dunlady.

I just found this post,and hope that you still check your messages from time to time. My name is Michael Lindsay and my Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Lightbody. She was born in abt 1866. She was married to James Lindsay and they emigrated to the U.S. in 1923 with my Grandfather William Lindsay and my Grandmother Eleanor Jane Niblock (plus their 4 sons). They were living at 8 Beatrice Rd in Bangor, County Down at the time of their departure to the U.S. I assume they were renting. I was told that my Great Grandmother's father owned a grocery store or a fruit store in Bangor. I can't confirm that or that the John Lightbody who owned the store mentioned in your email is any relation, but it sounds as if there could be a connection. I would be grateful for any other information you could provide. Thank You.

Biographical History of La Crosse, Monroe and Juneau Counties, Wisconsin. Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1892, pages 302 – 303. Submitted by Arlene Goodwin. J. H. Lightbody, La Crosse, Wisconsin.—Few, if any, among those engaged in real estate and insurance business in this city maintain as high a reputation for integrity and reliability as Mr. Lightbody, whose office is located at No. 107 North Fourth street. He was born in Oneida county, New York, July 25, 1840, and his father, Archibald Lightbody, was a native of Scotland. The mother, whose maiden name was Angeline Prentiss, was a native also of Oneida county, New York. Archibald Lightbody and family came to Wisconsin in 1852, settled in Calumet county, and there the father followed his trade, that of mechanic. He died in that county in 1873, when sixty-one years of age. He was a prominent member of the Congregational Church, and the mother, who is still living and resides in La Crosse, is an esteemed member of the same. She is now about seventy-four years of age. J. H. Lightbody, the eldest of five children, commenced business for himself in a printing-office at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and the last year was publisher of the Fond du Lac Commonwealth. After this he spent two years in New York city, in the mercantile business, closed out in 1871, and then came to Wisconsin, where he as in the employ of the Singer Manufacturing Company, having charge of one of their offices at Madison, Watertown and La Crosse. He continued with this company for fourteen years, and in 1887 engaged in his present business, which he has followed ever since with good success. In fire insurance he represents the United States of New York city, and the Mechanic’s of Philadelphia. He also deals in real estate, has an extensive business, and has his full share of the trade. Mr. Lightbody is married and has four children: Archie, in the employ of Hodges & Hyde, as stenographer and correspondent; Herbert, who is employed by Stultz & Schick, as an architect; and Martha and James, ages respectively nine and four. J. H. LIGHTBODY, manager of the La Crosse branch of the Singer Manufacturing Co., has been in his present situation since May, 1879; he is a native of Oneida Co., N. Y.; came to Wisconsin in 1871, and since that time has been in the employ of the Singer Co. He resided in Watertown and Madison previous to coming to La Crosse.

James LIGHTBODY is a son of Adam LIGHTBODY and Agnes NICHOLSON of Dumfries. Other sons went to Liverpool.

Adam LIGHTBODY's wife number 1, Marion PATERSON, had a son John who married Elizabeth DICKSON in 1747 in Glasgow. This is from the research of William LIGHTBODY’s "Lightbody Records". William researched this, his own branch. I have copies of his research.

I have an Alexander Lightbody also but born 1865 in Carluke Scotland. Father Thomas ballantyne and Elizibeth Lightbody.

Elizabeth is pretty interesting as she has kids to 3 men... so far. she is born 1841 and died 1929 all in carluke scotland.

I am sorry Michelle, but there appear to be no connections as my GGGrandmother was "Lightbody of the Ojibwa"...an Indian woman. She was married to my GGGrandfather, a Scottish man named Nelson Ferguson.

I have a database on Crowley's in the 1870 Census,--and there are 2 Daniel's---in town of Hubbard , assume that it must be father and son!--one is 14.
My gggrandfather was Daniel--and can't find him in either the '60 or 70 census. Believe he died between those two.

James being the son of William and Mary Ann (Moore) Lightbody. William with his sister Jane and brothers Hugh and James (my side) left Ireland around 1810-1815 for America.

Dear Mabel,
I noticed in one of your postings that you had the names of five Lightbody's who came to Nova Scotia in the early 1800's and also the spouses of same. Some of us have been looking for many years for their origin in Ireland without success.
I am really curious as to how you know that Elizabeth LIGHTBODY who married Anthony PEPPARD was a sister to Jane, Hugh, James, and William. I suspected but could never find any proof. She was married to Anthony and died in childbirth after having five children by him and both of his wives were buried in Debert, NS. Hugh is my direct ancestor.
Hugh and Jane were married in a double wedding but I have been unable to find the location of Jane's burial place. Her first husband died and she remarried Jacob BENJAMIN. They lived with her daughter Amelia for a few years and then they disappear from the census.

Mike , I was wrong when i said hugh was the son of james, he was a brother. I told my friend, burton lightbody, about your reply and he said to tell you , he was interest in the lightbodys that came from ireland to nove scotia in 1815. there were 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Lightbody/Ojibwa connection?

Our oral history includes a "Lightbody" who was an Ojibwa
Indian from the Thunder Bay, Ontario area. It used to be called
"Port Arthur". She married in the Indian way ( not legally ) my GGGrandfather,
Nelson Ferguson. I am descended from that union. I am very anxious to meet any

I am looking for the Family of Alexander Lightbody born June 1837 in Carluke Lewarkshire Scotland. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1882 He was a stone mason. He died December 27 1906. He married Martha Hamilton born 1838 in Scotland and died October 11 1895. They had at least 8 children born in Scotland. It appears that all of the children migrated to the USA.
