My father claims his heritage is Choctaw Indian and that his great-great grandfather was a member of the high council in the tradition of the old autonomy of the "five " civilized tribes. My father claims that his given name was choctaw (spelling could be incorrect) and that the name given was Jatau or chatau and later in his adult life he legally changed his name to Charles James Lightfoot. He claimed his father's name was also the same original first name. Secondly, he claimed that his father when moved to the reservations of Oklahoma ( when choctaws were offered citizenship), refused to accept the governments asigned numbers which have been referred to as "roller numbers" or numbers we now see on green cards. Lastly, the great-great grandfather was located in the Georgia area. Since our heritage seems to be indian, I would like any information about how we received this name. Rumor has it that choctaws fought in the civil war and it was a plantation owner that gave us this name. Any information would be appreciated.
