Edward Ligon

Hi, my name is Dwayne Edward Ligon, son of Edward Ligon and Sarah Jaunita Lovelace, of Indianapolis, IN I was born 10/27/1961, and am looking for information surrounding the history of the Ligon family. Seeing, how I am an African-American, I'm sure this name is derived from a former slave owned by the Ligon family.

It is my intention to find out all I can about the African-American side of the Ligon family name. More specifically, I am looking for my father, Edward Ligon, whom I have never met. If you, or someone you know, doing research on the Ligon family name (African-American side), know anything at all about an Edward Ligon, then please contact me with your history.

William D. Ligon and wives - discrepancy in Connections

I have looked at this many times and it seems everyone has not looked close enough unless someone can explain why. The William D. Ligon who was the son of Leonard Seth Ligon and Jannett Mayo Ligon shows in the Ligon Connections book to have married Martha Harris yet everyone has Elizabeth Taylor. There is however, another William D. Ligon who married an Elizabeth Taylor and William has the correct birthdate but his father is William R. Ligon born in 1787. Can anyone with the same book justify this information or even give me a separate source to settle it?

No, not the same people. I have the book and the here are the facts:
William R. Ligon b: 10 Mar 1787 Petersburg, Va d: 6 Nov 1856
his son is
William D. Ligon b: 26 Nov 1808 Richmond, Va and married to Elizabeth S. Taylor.
The info about William D. Ligon in the book is not what has bbeen widely distributed. When I looked through this book, I can see why it happened. A different William D. Ligon has been attributed to this particular line.

aletac1;

For your information there is a book titled" History of Cumberland Co., VA" in which there is a two page article about Karenhappuch Walker Ligon and the move with her four sons from Virginia to Texas in 1851. It might add some information to your genealogy. Also in this article it is st ated that the account of this trip can be found in the University of Texas Library because one of the participants, Anne Page EAnes kept a complete diary of this trip.

Hope this information is of some help.

Bernie in Virginia

Marsha:

In the book titled; "History of Cumberland Co., VA there is a 2 page article about the Ligon Family of Karenhappuch Walker Ligon who after the death of her husband moved with her children to Texas. In the book it states as follows:

"Karenhappuch Walker Ligon's husband William B. Ligon died before 1850 in Amelia Co., VA. Karenhappuch sold her estate from her late husband and from her father William Walker of Cumberland Co., VA. Their four sons, Robert S. Ligon, Warren Baker Ligon, Burton Ligon, William Walker Ligon and Smith Watson Ligon removed to Fayette Co., Texas September 1851 and settled near LeGrange, Texas. Karenhappuch accompained her sons on the journey to Texas. The Herbert Eanes and Watkins L. Eanes families were in the party. The account of the trip can be found at the University of Texas as Anne Page Eanes kept a complete diary of the trip. In the party were 5 families including 26 whites and 79 blacks with 42 horses, 10 wagons, 5 carriages. They traveled westward in Virginia, reached Tennesse line in 19 days, across Tennessee and Arkansas. They had ferried Tennesse River, Mighty Mississippi River, and Arkansas River. At Little Rock, Arkansas the party was robbed of 600 dollars by unknown hand as a trunk was taken from under a tent. The party arrived at Rutterville, Texas 26 December 1851."

The above is as it was written in the book and the article was written by Lottie L. Clymer, the great great grandaughter of Karenhapuch Walker Ligon.

Hope that this is of some help in your research of you ancestors.

Bernie Bland in Springfield, VA

Your reply to the above has sparked my interest. I am researching the Ligons who came to TX in 1851. My ggrandfather and his siblings and allied families, we believe, were brought to TX as slaves with the Ligon/Eanes families - which came from Virginia. The problem we have is that we can not locate any info which would substantiate this. I have reviewed all the estate documents of those Ligons and Eanes which died prior to emancipation - I have not found the smoking gun. I have reviewed the available information on these families which is published in "Southside Virginia Genealogies" and "the Ligon Family" - also without success.

I am looking for documents which would have come down thru the families (WBB, WW, SW, and Kerenhappuh) and would document slave ownership, purchases, transfers, etc. These need to include Christian names of some sort. There are many estate documents listed - by catalogue # - for spouses, parents, ancestors of these people in the above referenced books, but the information contained therein is sometimes referenced but the transcriptions are not given - I do have specific estate items #'s which I believe would be helpful. If you have any documents for the families of Kerenhappah, or her sons WBB, WW, or SW, I would be very grateful to correspond with you in hopes that the information we are seeking may be contained therein.

Thank you very much for any help you can give. He was apparently the son of James E, born c1823.

Savella Courtney Ligon, born 1888, died 1905. She was apparently the dau of George W. and g-dau of Daniel Wilson Tucker.

If Geo. W was not her father, who was?

Hi Again Ken:

My father's Bland ancestry is from Caroline Co., VA. and my mother is Ruby May Liggon of Richmond/Henrico Co., VA. My father in law's people are also from Caroline Co., VA,and mymother in law's people are from Powhatan Co., VA. It is because of this that I have done research on each of these counties.

Sorry the book does not give the name of Charles Seth Ligon as anything other than Virginia C._______ and it only indicates that they were married in Powhatan Co., VA. As you know Cumberland Co. orders on Powhatan Co. so they could have been married in either county.

Now here is some information that may help you on the Harrison Family. My beloved wife, now deceased, descends from Nicholas Wilkinson of Powhatan Co., VA. and the Wilkinson Family and the Cosby Family intermarried. From information that I have in my possession there was as follows:

Deborah Cosby born 13 Sept 1796 in Powhatan Co., VA who married on 21 Nov 1821 in Powhatan Co., VA to William Henry Harrison. William Henry Harrison was born in Yorkshire England on 12 Sept, 1761 and died in Powhatan Co. on 7 Jan. 1857. Their children were:

1. Thomas Bolling Harrison
2. William Fleming Harrison
3. Margaret Elizabeth Harrison
4. George Henry Harrison
5. Robert Jefferson Harrison
6. James Andrew Harrison
7. Alexander Francis Harrison
8. Mary Ann Harrison

William Henry Harrison was among the British soldiers who fought inthe Bartle of Waterloo against Napoleon and the French Army. After returning to England from the war he was one of the many who was unhappy and dissatisfied with the situation in England. With unemploymnet high the government encouraged migration and thus he came to Virginia.

William Fleming Harrison his son married Maria Louise Cosby his second cousin on November 26, 1853.

It appears that if Virginia C. Harrison was born in 1803 then she in all probability was not the granddaughter of the William Henry Harrison from England because he was not married until 1821.

I think that the Harrison Family in Caroline Co., VA also intermarried with the Pruett Family of the same county. Am not sure about this but if I recall correctly there was a Col William Henry Harrison who married an Elizabeth Pruett in Caroline Co., VA in the late 1700s

Now you know all that I know.

Bernie Bland in Springfield, Virginia

Hi Betty:

Sorry but I do not have any information on either a Linwood Ligon or a Lynwood Leagans of Nottaway Co., VA. According to the Ligon Book there was a Richard Ligon who born around 1745 in Virginia and was married twice: 1st to Mary Bagley in Amelia Co., VA and 2nd to Olive Jeter. He died in 182o in Nottaway Co., VA. According to the Census of Amelia Co., VA his name was spelled at one time as Richard Leagans. As you may know Amelia Co. borders on Nottaway Co., VA. That is about all that I can tell you at this tine.

Are you by chance from Richmond, VA? I was born and raise there.

Bernie in Springfield.

Hu Murray:

For your information there is a 943 page book on the noble Ligon Family titled: "The Ligon Family and Connections" by William D. Ligon, Jr. On page 217 it shows that there was a David Stovall Ligon to be the son of Obediah Ligon and Frances Stovall. On page 520 and 521 it indicated that David Stovall Ligon was born in Halifax Co., VA and died in Mecklenburg Co., VA who married Mary Elon wilkinson in Halifax Co., VA. They had a family of 9 children (all listed in the book). Their first child was Cornelia Jackson Ligon born in Clarksville, VA who married Richard Murray in 1870.

With the aid of this book your Ligon Family can be traced back to Col Thomas Ligon and Mary Harris of Henrico Co., Va. Col Thomas Ligon left his home in England and arrived in 1640 at Jamestown. He was 16 years of age and was accompanied by his cousin William Sir Lord Berkeley the Royal Governor of Virginia

Unfortunately this book was published in 1947 and now out of print and hard to find.

Regards, Bernie Bland in Virginia

Hi Jack:

According to the Ligon Book, Savalla Courtney Ligon born April 26, 1886 is the daughter of George William Ligon amd his 2nd wife Mary Harvie Tucker (sister of his first wife) whom he married on 28 Jan 1881. His first wife's name was Bettie Tucker whom he married 28 Feb 1877.

George William Ligon and Bettie Tucker had one child who died and the name is not given in the book.

The Bettie Ligon for whom you are looking could be the Bettie Tucker who was the first wife.

The parents of George William Ligon are Joseph Edward Ligon and Sarah Elizabeth Coleman.

Regards,
Bernie in Virginia

Hi Bernie

I was doing both. The question was where were they married, Cumberland or Powhatan Co.? So you say they were married in Powhatan. Do you know when and etc.? I have the information on the Ligon's. What I don't have is information on Virginia C.(Cary ?) Harrison. She was born 1803 acording to the 1850-60-80 census of MO. Its said that she was a grand-daughter of William H. Harrison, but I haven't found that to be true. In the 1880 census of MO. she said her father was from England, she was in bad shape at that time. There was a William H. Harrison from England in Powhatan Co. VA, but his wife wasn't old enough to have been the mother of Virginia, unless William had been married before? I was there four years ago, but only had one day and spent most of that day in the Powhatan Libary.
Thanks for your reply.
Ken Keen
Drain Oregon

Fannie Ligon married Mr. Camden. Their son John William Camden married Dora Riley, whose son Fleming Grafton Camden is my grandfather. I do not know much about Fannie and cannot find my gg grandfather's first name. I know that Fannie relocated to North Carolina (as did Fleming Grafton Ligon). I would love any information that can be provided and to share what I know.

Re: Susan Mary Ligon (wife of Henry Washington Brown)

The Henry Brown who married Susan Ligon may very well have been out of the same overall Brown family as Francis Brown "I" (died 1691/1692) of Essex Co., VA. It appears that a later "mystery" Francis Brown (born about 1700 and married a Christiana Unknown) was almost certainly related in some way to the above Francis Brown "I," and this "mystery" Francis Brown had a son named Hezekiah Brown (married Sally Unknown) who left Essex and who moved to Amelia Co., VA in the 1750s. Per input from other researchers, there were members of the Ligon family who were also in Amelia Co., VA (and see some of those records below).

In addition to the above, a Henry Brown, who is a known direct descendant of Francis Brown "I," also left Essex Co., VA, but he moved to Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA in the early-1760s. There was a Richard Ligon who also moved to Lunenburg/Mecklenburg, and after Richard Ligon died, his wife, Ann (Hixe/Hix) Ligon remarried to a Samuel Bugg in Lunenburg in 1757. This MAY very well have been the same Richard Ligon who was on the 1746 Goochland Co., VA tithe list (as was a Simon Ligon.....Simon Ligon's next-door neighbor in 1746 was a John Hixe/Hix). Two sons of the above Henry Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg named Mordecai Brown and Aris Brown eventually moved to Spartanburg Co., SC, so the Henry Brown who was there by the early-1800s (and who married Sally Ligon) COULD have been a descendant of one of these brothers.

I am not a "Ligon family expert," but it appears that all of these "VA Ligons" PROBABLY connect back to the Colonel Thomas Ligon who was apparently the "American immigrant" of this rather well-known family. I have often wondered if the Henry Brown who married Susan Ligon in SC was out of the "Amelia branch" of the above Browns or if he was instead out of the "Lunenburg/Mecklenburg branch" of the above Browns (versus none of the above). I know that the Hezekiah Brown who moved to Amelia had a son who was also named Hezekiah, and this son married a Miss Irby. They had a son named Irby Brown, and he married Rebecca Bonner Eppes (part of the same overall Eppes family that married into the family of President Thomas Jefferson). I don't know much, if anything, however, about any OTHER descendants of the older Hezekiah Brown and his wife Sally.

We have a DNA donor from the above Hezekiah Brown family. We also have several other DNA donors who match.nearly-match that man, and we BELIEVE that many of these other matches are out of the direct line of Francis Brown "I." As more people join the Brown DNA testing project, we should be able to completely "zero-in" on this overall Brown family. All of these matching/nearly matching DNA donors are in Group 10 on the following website:

http://brownsociety.org/browndna/dna-brown.htm

I strongly encourage any/all male Browns who have not been tested to do so (25 or 37 markers are recommended...doing just 12 markers can lead to "false positives"). This is probably the only way that we will be able to get to the bottom on this Brown family.

A man whose male Brown relative is out of Henry Brown and Susan Ligon provided the following info on the Ligons and Browns. His male Brown relative took the DNA test and matched/nearly-matched the others in Group 10. I note a few "Amelia Co., VA connections" in the following:

Morduca/Mordica/Mortica Brown was a witness on a land sale in 1827 for a Robert Ligon to a S. Tyger in Spartanburg Co., SC..... Robert Ligon was the clerk of interior district in that county....There is a Robert Ligton who was a brother of the Susan Ligon who married Henry
Brown....

Henry Brown's wife Susan Ligon died in
Tenn.....Henry Brown then remarried a Catherine and died in about 1855...

William Ligton who was in Amelia Co., VA married an Ann about 1740; they had a son named Robert Ligon born 1747 in Amelia Co., VA, and she died in Spartanburg Co., SC before 15 Jan 1806; he then married an Edith Watkins, and I have a copy of that will....leaving land to Brown/Ligon.

William Ligon born about 1682 in Henrico Co., VA married about 1702 in VA; died about 1764 Amelia Co., VA....

There is a William Ligon in Henrico Co., VA...born about 1660; married 1680; died 1689.....wife was a Mary Tanner.....her mother was a Mary
Brown.........

Thomas Ligon, born bef 11 Jan 1623/24, married about 1648 in Henrico Co., VA; died 1675; wife was Mary Harris.....

Comments on any of the above?
I believe the 8th and last Earl of Beuchamp ( pronounced "Bee chum )died in 1979. His living niece, Lady Rosiland Morrison lives at Madresfield Court. Madresfield, Worcestershire County, England. If you google "Madresfield Court" you will see a website listed ( among many others ) as,
BBC-Hereford and Worcester Features - Madresfield Court.
This is a wonderful website in color which allows you to view in a panoramic view the outside of Madresfield Court.
