Your assumption is correct they are related and I am still trying to put it together with the help of relatives. My cousin called him Uncle Joe. John and Lottie were the grand parents.

Would like for you to contact me to see if you may have other information for me (bits and pieces). My email is tanice@comcast.net.

Thanks.

Your wish is granted. I posted my first message back in 2002. Got busy and forgot how to get back on the message boards. A new google search brought your message to my attention.

This is the lillard family I am looking for. Tried to get further along before my mother passed away. She was the last living granddaughter of John (Della's last child).
Contact me directly my email address is tanice@comcast.net.

Thanks and God bless you. I have so many questions.

Hi Ken,
I am Wahidah. We need to stay in touch because sooner or later our history may merge or cross. My Lillard was John, born in VA (half irish & half black). Went to TN and married charlotte (maiden name unknown yet). Moved westward from there. Was in the first land run of Oklahoma Territory.

Wahidah
tanice@comcast.net

Re: Lillards in Virginia

THOMAS MADISON LILLARD was born December 5, 1815, in Madison County, where he lived until 1849, when he located on the Stanford pike, four and one-half miles northeast of Danville, Boyle County, where he has since resided. His father, Thomas Lillard, Jr., a native of Culpeper County, Va., removed to Madison County, Ky., in 1808; enlisted in the war of 1812, but was prevented by sickness from service; was a farmer and died March 3, 1816, aged about thirty-five years. He was the son of Thomas Lillard, Sr., who was a farmer and large slave owner in Culpeper County, and whose children were Benjamin, John and Thomas Jr. Thomas, Jr., married Deborah, daughter of Alexander Ryder, of Madison County (died in 1835, aged fifty-six years), and from their union sprang Christopher, Elizabeth (deceased), Matilda (deceased), Nancy (Morris) of Colorado, Catherine
(Patterson) of Shelby County, Ill., and Thomas M. On October 23, 1848, Thomas M. Lillard was united in marriage with Mrs. Williams, nee Miss Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Morrison) Bright, of Lincoln county, born March 3, 1823, and to them have been born Elizabeth B.; Erwin, Fannie (Robinson) of Belton, Mo; John T., of Bloomington, Ill.; Henrietta, Mary T. (Adams, deceased), Maria (Hargis), of Belton, Mo.; Catherine (deceased), Thomas L., Nancy B. (Adams) of Louisville, Stonewall J. (deceased) and William H. From 1839 until 1848 Mr. Lillard spent his winters in Charleston, S. C., and summers in New York, dealing in live stock, in
partnership with Walter Chenault, their business often reaching 45300,000 per annum. Mr. Lillard is now engaged in farming, owning 490 acres of exceedingly well improved and very productive land; devoted mainly to grazing. From observations he concludes that the farmer in the blue-grass regions in Kentucky cannot better his condition in the same business anywhere. In Youth, Mr. Lillard had an even start with the world, and by industry, frugality and careful attention to business has amassed an ample competency. With only a limited education, he has improved his opportunities by reading and is possessed of a valuable miscellaneous library. He has always been an emancipationist, though he lost eighteen slaves by the late war. He is a member of the Christian Church, and a
Prohibitionist. He is remotely related to Rev. Joseph Lillard, who in 1793 preached the first Methodist sermon in Illinois.

dcj52@comcast.net
daniel.jenkins@us.army.mil

So far, I have not been able to tie this family to other LILLARDs living in Oklahoma at that time but I may be able to do so with the additional clues you have provided. The Cudjo twins, who also played for the Harlem Globetrotters, had lived in Luther. They were enough younger, however, that there are still people living in the area who remember them. Joe LILLARD would have been old enough to have escaped mention in any of the interviews from the 1980s & 1990s.

I'm not a LILLARD descendant, but we have an African American LILLARD family in our area study and I would be very interested in learning whether they connect with any of the families you are researching.

Our John LILLARD was born in VA about 1840-1850 (records differ). His wife's first name may have been Sharlot or Charlotte, but we do know that her nickname was Lottie. She was born in TN in the early 1850s. I found John & Lottie in Cannon Co., TN in 1870 with two children, John & Betty.

I haven't found them in 1880 yet, but by 1885 they were in Wyandotte Co., KS, with four children -- Julia, Bennie, Joseph, and Sylvester. Sylvester was the first child born in KS.

They homesteaded in the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma Territory. I do not have the date that John filed his claim, but the family is listed on the 1890 census. Two more children, Jim & Eva, were born between 1885 and 1890. Della, the youngest I know about, was born in O.T.

According to the 1900 census, Lottie had had 11 children, 6 of whom were still living.

I hope I've provided enough information that someone will recognize this family.

Daniel Lillard / Sarah Sally Gates

Daniel Lillard died Mercer Co. Ky about 1810/1811 I am searching for the family after his death. I believe she remarried to James Cloyd but have not been able to find the information. Daniel Lillard died Mercer Co. Ky about 1810/1811. I find their daughter Elizabeth (Betsey) Lillard being married to Chesley G. Dickerson 19 Jan 1826 in Campbell Co. Ky consent by Stepfather James Cloyd. Witnessed by Sally Cloyd. Chesley and Betsy are in Sangamon, Co. Illinois in 1830 and 1840 census. She dies abt 1846 in Sangamon Illinois. Sarah also has a son Daniel Lillard (my GG grandfather) born about 1810. I found a pedgriee on Sarah which shows death date of 1843 Kenton Co Missouri, but I believe it to be Ky as there is no Kenton Co Mo. Any information on the marriage date and location and death information on Sarah Sally (Gates, Lillard) Cloyd would be appreciated

Don Wilson

dfmkwilson@yahoo.com
Albert called Al married Lucy Cobb. They had one child Norma born 1931 in Arizona - 1987. Al died when his daughter was 8 years old, about 1941. Lucy remarried moved to Washington. I have no birth place or death place of Albert or Lucy. Albert must have been born after 1900, he does not show up on the WW II draft records. Does anyone know of this Albert? Or of Lucy Cobb? Grandson is looking for some family history.
Thank You
Angie

Emmett Abraham Lillard was the father of my William, Herbert and Frank Lillard. He died in December, 1948 in Oklahoma City, OK of a self-inflicted gun shot wound - at least that is what his death certificate shows. I have not found his obituary as yet.

I have quite a bit on the family from Moise Lillard from France in 1639. I do not have any information on Frank or Herbert's families.
African American Lillard

Hello. I am an African American Lillard doing research on my Lillard ancestors. My Lillard Family roots are mostly in Virginia, W. Va., Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky. If you are engaged in doing research on African American Lillards, or Lillards of Native American ancestry, I would like to hear from you. If you know of resources or genealogical data on African American Lillards, I would really appreciate hearing from you, also. BTW, would anyone have information on my relative James Henry Lillard (aka J. H. Lilard), a minister from Tenn. who married Nina Mann in Franklin County, Tenn. in 1887? I would appreciate it. I read a message posted on this board from a Lillard Family in Bowling Green, Kentucky (author: lindakaye 1953)requesting information on her ancestor, Dave Lillard (an African American). Dave Lillard, according to the post, was from Jamestown, Virginia, and his wife Cecelia was born in 1800 in Jamestown, Virginia. There is a book titled "The Lillards: A Colonial Virginia" written by David Hicks Lillard. The question was raised can anyone make the African American connection referenced in David Hicks Lillard's book? Please feel free to contact me, as I am very interested in African American Lillard genealogy, and getting in touch with other Lillards. I can be reached at klillard1@verizon.net. Thank you.
Hi Twania,

Thanks for responding. My Dad, Horace, is from West Virginia, but lived in Chicago for a while before relocating to the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia. My great grandfather, Rev. James Henry Lillard of Tenn. may have also been known as J.H. Lilard (sic), as appears on some Tenn. records from the 1880's. My Lillard relatives appear to have travelled from Tenn. to Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Are you familiar with Erik Thorson, a Lillard descendant and genealogist? I beleive he has done some research on a Thomas Lillard. I don't know if this is your relative or not, but I can put you in touch with Erik if you'd like.
Are you familiar with the website Afrigeneas? It is a good resource. It is really nice meeting you. I will keep Thomas Lillard and Martha McDonald in mind as I pursue my research. I'll stay in touch.
BTW, I'm trying to pull together information on African American Lillards. The information out there seems to be very scattered and not easy to find, at least for my Lillard Family roots. It would be nice to have a place where African American Lillards can go for information, guidance, and resources as we search our family trees. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Very Best Wishes. Ken

Mears and Lillard connection

Everyone seems to have the same information from "Lillard: A Family of Colonial Virginia," that James Thomas Lillard married Mary A. Mears in 1853, but searching anything for her elsewhere turns up nil. Any thoughts or comments on this would be appreciated since I know the Lillards are quite into their ancestry.

Thanks for the tip--I hadn't noticed the note that Mary A. Mears was from Ireland. I put the info in and no new information popped up, but at least now I know to search Ireland and passenger lists.
Thanks again,
Jennie Alice Lillard

Joyce,
Have you found any information regarding the Benjamin Lillard who married Elizabeth Lightfoot. I too am of that line through my mother's line. I am trying to find out more about the Lightfoot line, all I have found is that her father was Wm Lightfoot, but which one? and who was her mother?
Re: African American Lillards

I can't really help you with this family (though I saw Lottie listed as a widow on the 1910 census). But I also wonder if this family might not be connected to the great African-American athlete, Joe Lillard. Joe was born in Oklahoma in 1905, was orphaned young, and went to live with relatives in Mason City, Iowa. He played football for the University of Oregon, was a pitcher and switch-hitter in the Negro Leagues, played basketball for the Savoy Big Five (that became the Harlem Globetrotters), and played as a halfback and quarterback for the Chicago Cardinals, being one of the last two black players in the NFL before they went "all white." Since there are only two African-American Lillard families listed in Oklahoma on the 1900 census (including the one you're trying to find out more about), I figured the chances are high the Joe is related - perhaps a grandson of John and Lottie. I'd love to know if you find out.
