Hi,
I am just researching some FT- it seems my gg grandmother was a Mary Theresa Lillis, m 1863 to Edward Beston, in Sydney Australia; they had 4 children. So far I have only found a Mary Lillis who arrived in Sydney aged 16, in 1858 on board the Herald of the Morning from Liverpool. Anyway good luck - maybe i will try a search in Cork.
Helen.

I'm not sure what their father's name was. My grandfather's name is William Bernard Lillis. I would think if both our grandfathers came from Waterford and their names are Lillis they should be related some how. My husband's grandfather came over too, thats the Lynch part of my name. We were married St. Pat's day in their honor.
Re: Lillis family from @ 1166 onward

According to information that I have been given, the Lillis' are French in origin. They came over with William the Conquer
and because of their valuable service to him in that invasion of England, he
granted them lands in Scotland, The original Name was De Lillis. Lillis, by
the way, is Latin for Lilly. Thus I believe that they came from Lille in
French Normandy. In the 1100's the Normans then invaded Ireland and the De
Lillis' were there in that army of Normans. They stayed in Ireland and
eventually used the surname of Lillis. The name of these original ancestors
may have been a similar derivation of the name.
Jean Mahaffey
-------------------------------------------------------
*Also mentioned in this info are these, some of the variations of the Lillis name may be: Lyle, Lillie, Lile, Lisle, Lyall, Lyal, Lyel, Lyell etc.

*William the Conqueror, granted them lands in Norfolk, England. Later the Scottish King David I, invited some of the noble Normans to Scotland and gave them larger estates than they had in England.

I have found this:
*Lillie is located in Flanders (Flemish) part of Northern France close to the border with ..."the Netherlands"?.
I think the family name refered to here is "Lyall, Lyal".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now then, what documentation can be found to suport this?
In the info given to me, I find the following possible documentation,(according to the original info mentioned above):

*THE DOOMSDAY BOOK,
THE RAGMAN ROLLS,
THE HONOUR ROLLS OF THE BATTLE ABBEY
THE INQUISITIO
THE CURIA REGIS ROLLS,
THE PIPE ROLLS,
THE FALASIE ROLL,

A LOT OF FURTHER RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE TO VARIFY THIS INFO.
--------------------------------------------
*The tradition in my Lillis family is also that Lillis is from France, and that there was a "de" in front of the name originally.

*Lillie is a town in France.

*My lillis Family came from Limerick County in Ireland to the US in the late 1850's and 1860's in N.Y. They then proceeded to
Frankfort, Franklin Co., Kentucky. Where they remained. My Great Grand dad came with members of his family. He was a stone mason as were some of the other members of the family. His name was Edward (Edmond in Ireland). He arrived in 1850's (maybe 1859)His mother and father were Pat B. Lillis and Honnorah(Nora)Leary. I have their marriage record and Edward's babtismal record. He was born Dec. 25, 1835 in Limerick, Ire. I have further about were in Lim. but don't have it immediatly to hand just now. I do know that the others comming over were John, Patrick, and Michael Lillis.

William and Henry were brothers born around 1762-3. Their brother Patrick was born around 1758 and was killed during the American Revolution in 1777, he was mustered for the Town of Kittery and bounty paid for his services. I have as yet not been able to validate his record with SAR, but have back up data to show time date and service orientation in Kittery,
Henry Married Susan (?)(1779-?) and had two sons, and several daughters, in town records of Dorchester, Grafton, NH,dated May 22, 1822, the sons are listed as vendue, and 7 shillings a week were paid to Capt Ebenezar, Graggs for their care. One of those sons was David Gibson Lillis (1814-1865), my Great Great Grandfather. Susan can be found in the 1850 Fed Census for Dorchester, at age 71. William married Betsey Palmer,(1780-?) on March 4, 1802. They had several sons and several daughters. Betsey can also be found living in Dorchester, in the 1850 Fed census at age 70. I am trying to establish a clearer picture of the Lillis family in Dorchester, Grafton, NH in the 1800's Can you help?
I have ordered the micro film of the Dorchester town records for that period and hope to gather further data. I would like to know more about this "vendue" business. Looks as if they were a ward of the County back then.....

Michael Lillis b ~1861 Rotherham, England and Bing Crosby.

I am descended from Michael Lillis (b 1861 Rotherham, Yorkshire according to 1901 census) who lived in Lancaster in 1901.

He also appears to have had a brother John Lillis (b 1864 Rotherham)

I can find no record of their births or of any Lillis family in the Rotherham area. Can anyone help trace them further?

Our family story is that they too are somehow related to Harry Lillis Crosby (Bing) but I am yet to find any satisfactory link to any Lillis family from all the Bing Crosby genealogy information I have looked at. Is this just an urban myth or reality?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Andy Parkes

Hi

I have some links to a County Clare Lillis family. My ggg grandfather was a John Lillis from Clare, son of Martin Lillis.

He was born about 1821 and his father was a farm labourer.

He married Ellen Boyle (from Sligo) in Salford in 1850.

I've not had any luck tracing the family further back so if you do come across a Martin Lillis in Clare I would be very keen to hear....

Enjoy your trip

Andy

Hi Lee-Anne, my name is Steven Lillis I live in Victoria and I have been conducting some research on my family history. My research indicates that my family migrated from Ireland to Outtrim, Korumburra, Arratt, Ballarat and South Melbourne.

Many of the descendants are named John (James), Edward, Patrick David and Francis. Some of these relatives were soldiers during WW1 and WWII. It may be worth you researching the War Memorial site in Canberra.
Good Luck

Hi Steven
My grandmother's name was Catherine Lillis, and she also came from the Outrim/Korrumburra area. She came from a very large family who later moved from Gippsland to Ararat. I'm not sure if I remember all her siblings names (some I have met, but I think all are now deceased). They were Tom, Gerald, Joe, Dave who lived in the Port Melbourne area (possibly your David) Eddie, and possibly a Jack and an Arthur. There were also quite a few sisters - Doris, Beaty, Alice, Eileen ... As you can imagine, there are many members of this family still around - some still in Ararat, also in Warrnambool, Melbourne and interstate. If you'd like to follow up, I'd be happy to put you in touch with others who know more. Good luck with your search.

Hello there, I had a great grandfather named John Lillis born in St Mary's Parish Limerick approx 1859, married Catherine Mabel Murphy in India (army) 1882. I am firmly stuck there unfortunately and cannot find any reference to him in the parish records of St Mary's. There is a strong possibility however that he could have been related in some way to your John Lillis? What do you think? If you have any information that could help me I would be delighted!

Lillis - research to be done in Ireland

My Gt Grandmother was Margaret Wiseman, nee Lillis 1856 - 1911, her father was Patrick Lillis b 1806 Co Clare, Ireland d 1886 Handsworth, Staffs UK (now Birmingham). She had three older brothers all born in Clare; Patrick c 1841, Thomas c 1843 and Richard c 1852. They arrived in Handsworth inbetween the 1841 & 1851 Census, and in 1858 Patrick (widowed?) remarried Bridgett Glynn from Galway also living in the Handsworth area, and had more children.
My research needs are:
the mother of the first four (or possibly more) children (ie my Gt Gt Grandmother)
where are they from (a possible is Kilrush)
where was Margaret born

If anyone has any cross links on any of this it would be FAB! Patrick Jnr ended up in Marleybone and seems to be the father of that London strain of Lillis but he seems to disappear after 1886.
Thomas and Richard both stayed in the Handsworth/Birmingham areas and died 1897 and 1895 but I think all Thomas's children predeceased him.

Look forward to anyone with anything to add. I'm off to Ireland at the end of the month with a view to trawling through the Clare Parish Registers!

Laura Green, Cambs, UK

Lillis Family from MS saved my life.

I want to tell you about a Lillis family that lived down the street from me when I was about 4 or 5 years old (about 1960).

I was walking down Bay Ave. (formerly Lloyd St.), Moss Point, Jackson County, Ms. A school bus was in front of the Lillis home (their son drove it for the school system).

A older boy who lived down the street dragged me onto the bus and was starting to rape me. I do not remember what happened after that, and still don't.

The Lillis family came out of their home and fought the boy off me. I was so young I never got to thank them.

So if they ever read this, I just want to thank that very brave family for all they did for me that day.

sincercly,
pat
