Lima family, Vieques, Puerto Rico

Looking for info re: a male Lima ancestor from Portugal who settled in Vieques, Puerto Rico sometime around late 1860's (died bef. 1910). He married Engracia Benna (or Benoit/ Benner/ Bennat?). They had two daughters, Eustacia and Maria Lima.

Eustacia married Evaristo Melendez Otero, while Maria first married a Nolasco, was widowed & later married Ulises Reyes Mercado. Both daughters and their families moved to Fajardo sometime after 1920.

Any info appreciated, thanks.

I am sorry, I missed your previous post. I have the Fort Leavenworth records from the Lima brothers, but have not run across this name you mention yet. Trabia was the town they were from so could it be a name of geographical derivation, like "Louie from Trabia" and not actually a surname?

I have a connection to this Lima family. My great aunt , also a lima, married into this lima family. She is shown in the 1930 census with her brothers, her husband peter lima and mother in law Anna Sunseri Lima. The ohio death certs for Peter and Anna are online at the Mormon site. I have these downloaded, if you need them. Also their obituaries are in the Cleveland Necrology file.

Hi there,
I really hope that you still have the same email or at least still have an acount with ancestry.com.
I think you and I might be related as Lima does not seem to be a very common last name in Guatemala. I was born in Guatemala City and have resided in California for over 30 years now. My beloved grandmother's name was Mercedes Cordero Lima. She was mormon. As a child, I heard of my grandmother having a sister that lived in New York City. Please feel to contact me. I am very curious to see if we are related since I do not know much about that side of the family.Thank you.

My grandfather's first wife's name was Josephine, the same as my mother's. The last time my famiy saw yours was your father's funeral in 1990, I think. Was your grandmother's name Concetta?

As many of us here I am also looking for some Lima family members. Lima comes from my dads side, Victor Torres Lima (Torres from his mother, Joaquina M Torres), and his dad, Manuel P Lima and grandfather, Domingos P Lima. I do not know any more about my great, great grandfathers and so and so forth. My dad knows nothing either. According to him some family members along the line immigrated to Brazil, I don't know what year it was and it seems there are a lot of Lima's in Brazil.
Lima is a very popular surname.

My dad is from Ponte de Lima near Viana do Castelo. I currently live in England and have no access to any records that might be of any help to me. If anyone lives nearby or knows anything please tell me.

Hi Mario,

Thanks for your message. Your father's dad was Dolores Eusebio Lima Ojea who married Petronila Rivera Alvira (Petra Rivera). They had at least 13 children, including your dad Agustin Lima Rivera. Never heard the story about Agustin moving to St. Thomas, though I know there are Limas there as well. You and I are related through Agustin's father; Dolores Eusebio was the brother of my 2nd great-grandmother, Rosa Lima Ojea. Yes, the family came from Ceiba & Naguabo. Rosa Lima Ojea married Miguel Vidal Feliciano & they went to live in Fajardo. Their great-granddaughter is my grandmother. There are still a few relatives in Fajardo but I don't know of any Limas that moved there. I have a lot of family information I'd be glad to share with you if you like, just email me at cyndidejesus@yahoo.com.
LIMA, MARY D. - Our beloved Mary Dorothy Orapello Lima passed away on March 12, 2000. Mary found joy in simple things that others miss and was able to balance her career, her undying devotion to her family, her church and community. Like her patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. She enjoyed a special relationship with all Gods creaturesë great and small. She is survived by her loving husband, A Philip Lima, her children and their spouses, John J. Lima and Barbara S. Lima, Philip T. Lima and Karen Lima, Nancy D. and Ed Faust, and Gregg S.
I know this family. Pietro (Peter) Lima was married to my great aunt Annie (real first name Nunzia, but went by Annie) , who was also born a Lima, and I believe either a niece or cousin of Pietro-- according to her daughter. Pietro's mother was Anna sunseri and was living with them in the 1930 census, right before she died. Her obituary (and his) is in the Cleveland necrology file. Her husband passed earlier. Peter died in a fire. His death certificate is available online through the family search site. The family rumor is that he was setting an 'arson for hire" fire and gt caught in it. Please email me for lots more about the Limas. Best wishes. melbutera@hotmail.com

Sebastiano also married to a Lima, Caterina . Her parents may have been Giuseppe and possibly a Nancy / Nunzia. She had a brother named Salvatore, too. Apparently, they all got in serious trouble in 1910 for being the first "Black Hand" case. Any conections out there?

Thank you for your response, but I have gotten many articles already from the Newspaper Archive and NY Times. I also got the actual prison records from Leavenworth. They are fascinating, but very sad. My great-grandfather, for example, went in to the prison as a healthy young man and died a very debiliated man a few years after his release. One of the punishments he received for "talking in Chapel" was to "Be chanied to a cement floor grate fromo 5 am to 10 pmin isolation, on bread and water." The records do list a lot of the relatives (any communications were logged) so I have a pretty good sketch of both the Sicilian and American Limas, and their relatives: the Ignoffos, if anyone needs this info.

Lima in Puerto Rico

Hi, I'm looking for information about one of my ancestors, Ramon Lima, who lived in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, sometime in the 1830s and who was married to Ramona Susana Melendez. They had a daughter, Rosa Lima y Melendez, b. 1837, who is my 2nd great-grandmother. I'm trying to find out where Ramon Lima was born, also whether he had any sons who retained the surname Lima. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate your passing it on, many thanks!

Lima Benoit family of Vieques, Puerto Rico

I'm looking for information regarding the Lima Benoit family, living in Barrio Mosquitos on Vieques, Puerto Rico during the early 1900s.

The father's surname was Lima and he was from Portugal. The mother was Engracia Benoit (mispelled "Bennuá) in the census registers. She was from a neighboring island in the Caribbean, not sure which. They had two daughters, Eustacia and Maria.

Eustacia married Evaristo Melendez Otero and moved to Fajardo. Maria remained on Vieques at least through 1930 and she married twice, her first husband's surname was Nolasco, and the second husband was Ulises Reyes Mercado.

Any additional info appreciated, thanks.

I have some knowledge of the event your talking about. It seems that the Limas were indicted for Black Hand activities around 1910 and found guilty in Toledo Ohio. Some escaped back to Sicily but others were sent to Federal Prison. I have several newspaper articles on it if you would like them.
