LIMPUS/LYMPOSS

I'm trying to find the origins of my LYMPOSS/LYMPUS/LIMPUS family from Guildford, Surrey.
The earliest mention of them in Surrey is a marriage for a Richard LIMPASS to Sarah PANNELL in Ash, Surrey in 1773. They had a son baptised in Stoke next Guildford in 1778 - named William. I can't tie him into my tree.

My direct connection is Ann LYMPOSS who was the daughter of John and Ann LYMPOSS who was baptised in Stoke next Guildford in 1812 - she had 7 brothers and sisters.
I can't find where John came from - almost certainly not Surrey.

There is another LYMPOSS family in Stoke next Guildford - this is William who married Elizabeth ELSON in Farnham, Surrey in 1791.

I'm fairly certain that the surname was not spelt LYMPOSS originally because there don't appear to be any other famileis anywhere else with that spelling. I think it was probably spelt LIMPUS but I can't prove that!

Later generations of my LYMPOSS family formed the dairy LYMPOSS and SMEE - previously called Lymposs and Sons.

Any help with unravelling my mystery much appreciated. I have quite a lot on the Guildford branch that I'd be happy to share and alos on a couple of other LIMPUS families that I've looked into.

Best wishes,
Linda
lindasfamily@hotmail.com

Scott: Sorry to hear of the death of Bertha Limpus. My mother-in-law was Charlotte Limpus and my granddaughter is also named Charlotte. A name seen in this familys' history. I would love to see the family tree dating to the 1700's. I may have some of this information, but am not certain. Does it include the story of Mt. Olympus? Looking forward to hearing from you.

LIMPUS --- Frank Nelson LIMPUS
Lincoln Beacon, Sept. 24, 1885
---Frank Nelson Limpus died at Shady Bend, Sept. 20,
1885, aged 16 months and 24 days. The disease which
carried off this little child was of only a few days
duration, and the outcome was a sad surprise to the
parents. The funeral was conducted at the house the
next day by Rev. W.D. Ward. A large concourse of
friends followed the remains to their last resting
place in the Monroe burying ground, where they were
laid close beside the graves of four others who have
passed away from the same family.
LIMPUS --- Burritt P. LIMPUS
Lincoln County Beacon, Aug. 6, 1885
---July 3, at his home at Shady Bend, Burritt P.
Limpus, aged 16 years. Deceased was born in Fayette county,
Indiana, Aug. 6, 1869. Six years ago he removed to
Lincoln county, Kansas, with his father's family. Last
winter he was thrown from a horse, receiving several
injuries about the head. Four weeks ago he was
overcome by the sun's heat, and it was probably the
two causes combined which at last resulted in his
death. Funeral services were held at his father's
house, on the morning of the day following his death,
Rev. W.D. Ward officiating. The remains were taken to
the Monroe burying ground for interment, accompanied
by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and
acquaintances.
Charlotta A. Limpus, dau. of David Limpus and Elizabeth Springer, married George Utter 12 Jun 1851 in Rush Co., Ind. Charlotta Limpus Utter apparently died 25 Aug 1864 at New Salem, Rush Co. I did not find this family in the 1860 Ind. Census, nor does George Utter have any Rush Co. deeds. Does anyone have information? Were there any children? Is he the George Utter married to a Phebe in 1880 Columbia, Fayette Co, Indiana? In that census George Utter is age 52, so born 1828, in Indiana with both of his parents born in New York. There are several children in that census. One is a bit older then the others – Theodore Utter, age 21, so born 1859. You may email me directly at RizerK@erinet.com
Scott:

I just got your message! Thanks so much for responding. I need your e-mail address so I can respond personally. My (our) cousin, Donna Granger Wood (Richmond, IN.) and I are researching gggggrandfather, John. I would very much like to see the family tree that you have and also Donna and I are more than willing to share what we have. I grew up in Connersville, In. and Donna grew up in Columbia. Please respond so we can touch base. Again, thank you so much!

Linda S. Fitzgerald

ggggreat grandfather Limpus

The name and locations sound familiar. My grandmother Bertha Limpus just died in Connersville, IN and some of relatives were talking about my grandfather's grandfather. I have a family tree that dates back to the early 1700's, if I can be of any help, you can email me back!
