Lincoln

Does anyone know of a list of "Lincoln's" either on the internet or in book form. I am trying to trace my maternal family and their last name is Lincoln and they come from
Norfolk, England. I have traced it back to a Jeremiah Lincoln (born 1771 in Fundenhall) who was possibly married to Mary Patrick and who had a father named Aaron. The latter is an educated guess. If anyone can help or guide me to where I can go to further the tree, it would be greatly appreciated.

"Descendants" of President Lincoln

It may seem like a small distinction, but it is a very important one:

There are NO living *descendants* of the president. To be a descendant, you must be in his line of descent. Only his son Robert lived to adulthood, and all of his childrens' descendants are now dead.

It is possible to be a *relative* of the president, if you are descended from Samuel Lincoln the weaver, but no one living is a descendant of the president. To claim so is inaccurate and confusing to people who understand what a descendant means.

Licoln adoption

My great-grandmother Mary E. Dukes (or Duke) (b. abt 1873) was adopted by a Henry W. Lincoln (b. 1848, Ohio)and his wife Mary E. Hoffman (b. abt 1856) sometime during the 1870s. Her adopted sister was Luvinna D. Lincoln (b. abt 1878) who went on to marry a man with the last name of Pingle.

Henry W. is the son of John S. Lincoln (b. 1816, Virginia) and Elizabeth (Lincoln) (b. 1832, Indiana). We think there might be a link to the Lincolns of Rockingham County.

Mary Dukes is called Mary Lincoln in the 1880 census. We think she may be the daughter of Henry's sister, but we're not positive.

Any information that could help make some links would be greatly appreciated.

Joseph C. Lincoln related to Abraham Lincoln?

Hello. A nice gentleman told me that his research indicated that Thomas (the cooper) was not directly related to Abraham Lincoln. However, I was told by my mother, Anne Sargent Lincoln (now 80), that her grandfather, Joseph C. Lincoln (the well-known Cape Cod novelist from Brewster, Mass.), was related through a brother to Lincoln. Any input? I recently learned that my cousin Ginny has the "Family Bible," so we'll do some research from that end. Thanks for any help you can give us. Vicky

When was Apollos Lincoln born?

I'm finding conflicting information on an Apollos Lincoln (father of Caleb). I actually got pretty far finding names of his ancestors and whatnot, but suddenly I'm faced with a problem.

I can find work other people have done (and quite a bit of it) citing his birthday as 1771 in Vermont (although another thread around here indicates he was probably born in Mass.), and 1777 born in Windham. Both of these people are married to a Lois Bill and have the same kids.

So which date is correct? 1771 or 1777? Lois birthday is also different in each. One has simple "about" birth and death dates, the other has exact. Should I go with the 1777 date because it shows more specific dates?

John Lincoln, son of Thomas the Miller (or the Cooper?)

More contradictions, heh.

I can find work other people have done citing John Lincoln as both the son of Thomas the Miller and Thomas the Cooper.

All of them cite his birth as 1633/38/39, though in my opinion 1633 is the more accurate, since he is listed as born in England by almost all of them, and Thomas the Miller emigrated in 1635. They all cite his death as 21 Jun 1719 in Taunton. And all of them have him married to an Edith MacOmber.

Does anyone know who he was really the son of?

My dad, Larry Lincoln, passed away last Sunday. He was 80. He posted here quite a bit over the last few years, and I wanted to ask that anyone trying to correspond with him contact me. I'm the keeper of the family genealogy now, not a role I was looking forward to assuming. He died quite peacefully and with very little pain, at a residential hospice facility.

President Abraham Lincoln connection

I was researching through my family records and noticed a connection with Mordecai Lincoln. My grandma picked up a copy of the President Lincoln family ancestors from his boyhood home. According to the chart, Mordecai Lincoln (1686-1736) and Hannah Salter had several children. I am off the Mary Lincoln (b. 27 Sept. 1719 at Amity, Berkshire Co. PA and d. 1769 at PA) and Francis Yarnall (b. 27 July 1719 at Willistown, Chester Co. PA and d. 1781 at Willistown, Chester Co., PA. This information does match, but I am not certain about the connection.

Does anybody have any information?

Thanks,
Angela

I am searching for a copy of Joshua and Ann Maris Lincoln family picture. There is one that was posted on a Google website for the Schlue family but it shows only half the picture. The four brothers, Lewis, James, George, and T.D. are showing in the top half but the bottom half is cut off which would show the folks Joshua and Ann Lincoln. T.D. Lincoln is my g-grandfather through his daughter Clarisa Lincoln Neill. I have other Lincoln pictures and would be glad to share mine with whomever has one of Joshua and Ann Maris.

Joseph A. Lincoln, b~1806 in MA and d. bef Jul 1860 in NJ?

There seem to be a number of informed LINCOLN scholars out there as I have watched the information flow over the last few weeks, so I thought I'd try out my brick wall on you.

1840 Census in Everham, Burlington, NJ shows Joseph LINCOLN, his wife, 3 young daughters and an unknown female.
1850 Census in Southwark, Phil, PA shows Joseph, 44, Corduainer, his wife Sarah and 6 children. All but the last two boys show as born in DE, they in NJ.
1859 NJ City Directory shows Joseph in Patterson, Passaic, NJ as a blacksmith (a family trade from his inlaws)
1860 Census in Cinnaminson, Burlington, NJ shows Sarah Lincoln, (No Joseph) the youngest girl and the two youngest boys (one whose name is Joseph A previously referred to as Ashbrook). I can't find Joseph anywhere after 1859.
The first daughter Elizabeth, married the Rev William Margerum and they are buried in Cinnaminson, NJ.
The second daughter Amanda, married John McFarland
The third daughter, Deborah Anna married Ruben Wilbraham which is my mother's ancestor. They both are buried in Cinnaminson, NJ.
The fourth daughter, Cornelia A. married a C. Conover. I have no further information.
The first Son, Joseph Ashbrook, married 1. Julia M. Lober and has no children I know of. Married 2. Margaret ? from Cuba and had a son Ashbrook who died in Richmond, Contra Costa, CA in 1998.
I am interested in filling in some of the holes, obviously, but am most interested in who Joseph A(shbrook)'s father is. I don't yet know if Asbrook from CA has male children, but maybe a DNA would prove direct us there.
Any help or illumination would be appreciated.
I also found his name in the Oak Ridge Cem. which mentioned that he was born October 26, 1819 in Bethany Center, NY and died September 26, 1903 in Sandwich, IL.

Charles J. Lincoln was married to Mary Johnson also born in NY. I believe Charles was the son of Jerediah and Mary Lincoln.

Does anybody have any information about the Lincoln family history or Charles J. & Mary Lincoln?

LINCOLN, Charles; possibly lost a bible during Civil War

I found the following article in the Newnan Herald (Coweta County, GA). I have transcribed the article below in it’s entirety and have no further information at all to share. If you would like a copy of this article, you can contact the Newspaper Project at the University of GA and order the microfilm (http://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/). Since the article mentions a bible and a name, I had hoped it would help someone.

April 3, 1874: A lost Bible - Whose is It? - at William Orday’s Boarding House Norte Creek Warren County New York fifty-seven miles north of Saratoga Springs, on the Adirondac Railroad, is an Octavo Bible, brought from South during the war, with the family record in the forepart, with the following among the registers of death:
“Our father Benjamin Bradord Reynolds, died September 9, 1849, at six o’clock: aged 43 years, 11 months and 13 days.”
The Bible was brought North, it is said, by Charles Lincoln.
Mr. Ordway will freely give it to the owner upon application.

Ira Louis Lincoln and Etta Leona Taylor Lincoln

I am tracing my husbands Lincoln lineage and have run into a dead end for several years now and am wondering if anyone might have some info that could help me find any leads. Ira Louis Lincoln was born in 1894 I believe somewhere in Texas, I have no clue who his father was and all I know about his mother is her first name of Ada. I do have a marriage license for her marrying another man in 1896 when Ira was 2 years old, the mans name was EW Crummey in Simms Texas. There was a child born in 1897 named William Crummey I believe is Ira's half brother. Then in 1900 the EW Crummey man married a different woman, I can not find a death record or divorce record of any kind for Ada and EW and there are no guardianship papers for Ira either, although EW continued to raise Ira until he reached the age of 16 ( proof in 1900 census) then in the 1910 census I find him a "ward" of the state in Oklahoma but living with a Robert Brunnon and his family. In 1912 he married Etta Leona Taylor from Simms, Texas and lived there for a number of years and had 6 children only 4 lived past the age of 1 and a half. their names are Herman, Mrytle, Roy T., and Hugh Carney. They also lived in the Horatio, Ark. area for awhile. In the courthouse in that county of Sevier I found where Ira was ordained into ministry for the Church of God. Ira died in 1947. The only things family can tell me is that he was known as Rev and they grew up thinking he was an orphan. My best conclusion is that maybe his mother died in childbirth with William Crummey, but this is only a guess. He is buried in Old Union Cemetery in Simms Texas beside his wife and 2 children that past at a young age , their names was Irene and Lewis. If anyone has any information it would just be a blessing . Sincerly, Wendi Lincoln

Family of Thomas "Husbandman" Lincoln (1622-1692)

I seek any new information on the parents of Thomas Lincoln, the Husbandman. Almost every published family tree claims his father was a Stephen Lincoln, son of Robert Lincoln and Margaret Alberye, and Joan (--?--). My contention is that this Stephen of Wymondham, Norfolk, Eng., generally cited as born 1555 and died 1598, died well before Thomas was born. That implies that there is a generation missing in this line. I will be delighted to be corrected on any phase of my story, with some evidence, of course..
Looking for info on Lewis Emerson Lincoln, Jr.; born 10 Aug 1905 in Providence RI; lived in North Providence, RI in 1939 with wife Ruth A. and was a salesman, according to town directory. A Massachusetts death index from 1970-2003 says that a Lewis E. Lincoln died in Milford, MA in 1973. Not sure if this is the same one. This man was my grandfather's 2nd cousin, trying to find out if there are any descendants.

I found it very intersesting just to read.
THE YOUNG EAGLE BY Kenneth J. Winkle

More than just "he split rails" and a lot more about his father. Who was not as poverty stricken as he has always been portrayed.

DJ

tracing the Lincoln line - help please!
Our grandmother was a Lincoln by birth and we are trying to do research on her Lincoln family line.
I will start from my grandmother and go as far as we have been able to trace this linage.
Our grandmother : B
Beulah Burrell born 25 Dec. 1896 daughter of George Burrell and Lizella Lincoln in Peoria, Illinois. Lazella was the daughter of William Abraham Lincoln "born o6 October in New Jeresy ( ? maybe summerset) he was the son of (possibly) Marvin Lincoln of New Jeresy. William was married to Almeda ( or Almedia) Correll ( ? if this last name is spelled correctly also). William and Almeda was married 12 Jan. 1865 in ?.
Do you have any records on this line of Lincolns? We would love to trace back as far as possible as we are doing genelogy for our families and this has proven to be a dead end for us. Therefore any help you can supply would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.
Corliss
memaofnine@mchsi.com

Lincoln,..."an 11th generation Lincoln" going back to Samuel, or Samuel the weaver as he's known on the family tree, who emigrated from England to Hingham, Mass. in 1637.
Ralph Lincoln's relationship...far removed & complicated...
Going backwards, from son to father, the president Abraham was born of Thomas who was born of Abraham who was born of John or "Virginia John"-so he was Abe's great grandfather.
Going sideways, Virginia John's brother was Mordecai, who settled in Pa.'s Fayette Co. in 1770s.
Going forward, Mordecai begat Benjamin begat Mordecai begat Mordecai begat William Edward Rose begat Carl who begat Carl who begat Ralph in 1956....
Dozens, including the president's great grandfather's brother Mordecai, are buried in the tiny Lincoln family cemetery between Connellsville & Uniontown.
But these days, the local link is lost on most. Not even the Connellsville Area Historical Society seems to know anything about the Lincolns in our midst....
pg.

Growing up I always heard that my great, great grandmother received a letter from Abraham Lincoln stating that they were cousins. When she was in a nursing home the letter was stolen and never found. Upon the recent death of my grandmother I found our family tree that someone in the family had written down. On it was a Robert lincoln who was married to a Mary (no last name given)it said that she was iriquois. Below on the family tree it stated that Robert and Abraham's father were brothers. Could this be Mordecai Lincoln who was married to a Mary mudd? Was Mordecai's middle name robert by any chance? It also shows on the tree that Robert and Mary had a daughter named Lucy who married a robert place. They had a daughter named Lorana Lincoln Place. Any information that anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am trying to trace my G G Grandfather Isaac Lincoln who I think was born near Norwich in Norfolk. He was a wheelwright and married Lois Winter in 1828. They had two daughters Elizabeth born about 1829 and Mary Anne about 1832 both in Loddon Norfolk I believe. Sometime prior to 1861 they moved to London. Any relation?

Catherine Lincoln and Dorcas Lincoln Lofland

So convinced was my mother that we were Lincoln cousins that she gave me Lincoln as my middle name. But her only proof of kinship was an old Victorian memorial size 16 x 40 inches with dove and wreath and in an insert box the following names: Smith Lofland (1815-1881); Dorcas Lofland (1816-1894); Catherine Lincoln (1784-1873) and Mary J. Baldwin (1834-1869).

Dorcas Lofland was the wife of Smith Lofland, and was claimed by my mother to be a Lincoln, although I have not been able to document it. Catherine Lincoln? I have found no Catherine Lincoln with those life/birth dates.

My mother's grandmother was a Lofland and all of the above dwelled in Rockingham and Augusta Counties, Virginia, but the link between mom's grandma and the alleged Dorcas Lincoln Lofland has not been made, and this Catherine Lincoln is also a mystery.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I am about to renounce my middle name and cousin pretentions, although it is a little late to do so (age 69).

Truly yours, the Still Hopeful
Jerry Lincoln Prillaman.

PLEASE does anybody know for real who her parents were? And don't parrot back her father was Calvin Lincoln of Jefferson County, NY, because in 1830, he did NOT have a daughter of the right age - his oldest was under 15. She was born in 1814, according to the LDS. I think the SAS is wrong. I think they are basing their records on the 1820 census. Her obit says she and her husband came from Oswego in 1839 - the only Lincoln in Oswego in 1830 was Spencer Lincoln, and he did have a daughter the right age. She was my great-great grandmother. Any other descendants out there?

Attached is a photo taken in March 2003 of the headstone of Robert E. LINCOLN, who is buried in the Sinnett Cemetery, located in Cimarron Twp., Pawnee County, Oklahoma in Sec 14 T20N R9E (I believe in the NE corner of the section). It is a pretty, rural cemetery that was relocated in the early 1960's from "old Keystone"--a town that no longer exists so that the Keystone dam could be built in its place.

The inscription reads:

Robert E. In his first inaugural address, Lincoln tried to woo the South back into the Union, but after the bombardment of Fort Sumter , April 12, he called for 75,000 volunteers to suppress "the insurrection," declared a blockade of Southern ports, and authorized the suspension of Habeas Corpus in areas threatened by pro-secessionist elements. Thereafter the history of Lincoln's administration followed the course of the Civil War.The humane character of Lincoln was best demonstrated by his policy of reconciliation with the South, as expressed in his second inaugural address, March 4, 1865, in which he spoke of "malice toward none" and "charity for all." He died from an assassins bullet a few weeks later on April 15,1865. Photo taken in early summer, 1861 in Washington, D.C.

Lois Denaut at ldenaut@yahoo.com
