They've not shown up in my lineage. Most of mine came through Tennessee. Sorry. Good luck in the hunt. Did you check for them on the immigration rolls? The hunt gets really difficult prior to 1850, when records lacked detail. If there is any chance of military service, such as civil war, there are sometimes unexpected pieces of information there too, like place of birth, county of muster.

To clarify my question, I am finding no Linde Von Hinskey, or Von Hinsky coming over from Bohemia at the time of his immigration. I have tried all spellings, dropped the Von, everything I can think of. I will keep looking. It is possible that the family had changed its name much early, prior to coming to America. I find lots of Lindes coming during the right period, some from the right area of what is now Germany/Czech.

I am Gary's wife. I looked at your profile and see that you are one of aunt Eva's grandkids. Glad to see someone else joining this hunt. Bob Linde had done a lot of work on the genealogy, and supposedly had the smoking gun. BUt when I looked through what had been given to his brothers, I didn't see the proof.

Linde/von Hinskey Mystery

Joseph Linde, 1840-1884, came from Bohemia in Germany and settled in Tennessee. I have him married to a Josephine Shaw, but I do not know where I got that information.

Here is the mystery. For generations the family lore (husband's family) has been that the name Linde had been changed from Hinsky or Von Hinsky or something similar when Joseph immigrated from Germany to US.

Anyone researching Linde family with a similar tale, I would like to compare notes. I don't know what name to look for in ship records or in German records.

Lynn, I am helping a friend with his genealogy who lives in CA and is probably one of your cousins, and a great grandson of August born 1852 and Ann born 1854. All we know is that they came to Wisconsin from Germany in 1874. Is this the same family you are researching.

I asked my Father if he recognized the name Fred and he did not. However, Annie Linde--the spouse of a Dr. Anderson and the daughter of T.F. Linde, a former Mayor of Hot Springs, Arkansas-- and a dentist, did have a sister and brother. The brother Albert Linde, did live in the Los Angeles area. Dad thought Albert Linde may have had children, but didn't know if they were male or female. Annie and Albert are my Father's aunt and uncle.

John Linde

I have traced my surname (Lindee) back to and am now stuck at John Linde. I found no information on his birth year or birthplace, however, he had a son with Amelia Knaach (or Knack) in 1847 in Templin, Germany named Gustav C. Lindee. I don't know the events that changed the name from Linde to Lindee, but it might have to do with Gustav's immigration to the US in 1872.
Gustav married Louisa Hacke (from Cook County, IL [Chicago]) in 1883 and had 4 children, the second being Carl F. Lindee who married Vera Coleman and had 2 children, the first of whom was my grandfather, Carl Lindee, Jr.
If anyone has any helpful information I would be very thankful. I am trying to figure out if the last name is German or Swedish and wanted to see if I can go back any further than John Linde.

Linde Family from Sweden

My great-grandfather Gustave Frederick Linde was born in Härnösand, Sweden March 11, 1899 and died there in June 1984. He immigrated to the US about 1915 and married Aina Jokinen. Their children Glenn and Martha were born in the 1920's in Madison, Wisconsin. After Aina's death Gustave moved back to Sweden and married a woman named Ada (or Eda) whom he knew as a young man. Ada was born Dec 24, 1899 and died July 1999.

I have information about Gustave's siblings, Elsa K. (Johnson), John, Carl A. and Paul J. but little on his parents John and Martha Linde. All the siblings moved to Minnesota. Martha was born about 1864 and immigrated to the US. in 1917 with the youngest Paul. I believe she died in Minnesota but have no information. I have no information about John. I'm assuming he died prior to 1917 in Sweden since Martha was listed as a widow on the 1920 census. It is also possible that John or his father were in the military and changed their name from Johannson or Johanson.

If anyone has any further information about this family I would appreciate it.

Van der Linde was one of two men who invented the chess board/game. He is somehow tied to my decendents, too. My father's grandmother talked about him. Look in the Neatherlands, Germany and Prussia, as well as Sweeden and Denmark. The Von is found in Denmark--Van in the Netherlands---Spellings vary by county. Good luck!
