James Lindley and Sophronia Gray

I am coming across records indicating that James Lindley (1826-1872) son of William and Unity Warren Lindley married Sophronia A Gray and that he died in Iola, Allen, Kansas. I believe these may be my ancestors and I am looking for source information regarding their marriage, parents, and children. Any help you can provided is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Was the name ever spelled

Lineey or Lindley or Linehey? I took a picture of a tombstone in Ireland last week from County Meath from the 1750's and it appears that they name is spelled Lineey one place and possibly Lindely or Linchey another. I am going through Ancestry trying to make an exact name match but have not as yet. If anyone would like to try and decipher this feel free to contact me.
Cheryl

She moved to Pecos, Texas about 1962 and was adopted by Elizabeth & Billie Rice.

Also the name Roy pops up in the story.

chadmertz84@gmail.com

did you ever find any information on Lydia Lindley and her family? I found a record of where she was going to marry John Howell, applied for the license, but then it is said he married her sister instead, Jenny. I cannot find any proof of this. I just wondered if you ever found anything about this family.
I have her father in my tree as well. If you are interested my tree on Ancestry is Kay Fetter 2009

William LINDLEY 1889 Farnworth Lancashire

I know quite a bit about this person but am trying to "square the circle"

Born Farnworth 1889 son of John Lindley and Elizabeth Turner
Married Alice Egerton 3 June 1914 at Middlewich Cheshire
Had one child Bessie born 1916

There is no one alive who knows where or when he died but family heresay states it was very soon after the birth of Bessie, probably no later than 1920 and he was living in the Farnworth area.

I know he was not killed in WW1.

I'd appreciate any information thats out there and in particular if someone knows where the records for Farnworth cemetery are to be found ( is there more than one ? ) Most family events going back in time seem to have occured at St John Farnworth with Kearsley but no burial records seem to exist after 1903. Anyone know if the chuch ceased burying people in the churchyard after that date and if not when.

Polly Ann Lindley of Alabama

Hello,

My mother was a grandaughter of John William Lindley (1847-1927) of Red Bay Alabama son of Jacob and Cathrin Lindley. John died in MS.

My mother's family notes state that she learned John was married twice and that there was a daughter named Polly Ann who remained in Alabama when the family moved to MS. She did not know if there were other children of the first marriage. Our family has no other information on the first marriage or of Polly Ann.

There is a Polly Ann Lindley buried in Halltown Cemetery in AL. Her birthdate falls in line with when John would have been married the first time. A Polly Ann is mentioned in several family trees but the ancestry shown does not match our family. But residence info in Red Bay does. She is shown in a 1910 census living with her brother Joel V. Lindley in AL. A Joel V. Lindley is shown living with his grandparents Jacob and Cathrin in Alabama in 1880 census.

Does anyone have any information on John Whilliam Lindley, Polly Ann Lindley or Joel V. Lindley to help clear up this mystery? Could Joel V. also have been a child of John?

Any input would be appreciated.

I believe that I have additional information. My grandfather was Ralph Waldo Lindley of Arlington, Tx. He and his wife Cecil were from Kansas - I believe she was from Liberty (KS) and he was from Independence (KS). Her maiden name was Roszel. I believe that his father was George Levi Lindley, son of Isaac and Elizabeth. My sister (Kathy Smith) and I are the daughter of Connie(Constance)Baker (maiden name Lindley) and Willard Baker of Austin, TX. Our grandparents were Ralph and Cecil Lindley. When our grandparents and our mother were still alive, we visited Coffeyville, Independence and Liberty (KS)several times. I would love to know more about our ancestors. Thank you.
It was interesting to see that Napthali is my 4th great grandfather as well. My line goes through his son Josephus
who married Jane Chandler June 9, 1816 and they had 8 children, with James Simonson being my 2nd greatgrandfather.

Napthali married Phoebe Foredyce 25 Jan 1790. He died in 1803 . His father was Caleb, who married Elizabeth Mills. Caleb had 4 wives, but we assume that Elizabeth was Napthali's mother.(Her dates are May 1, 1726 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Massachusetts, to March 2, 1807 in Morris,Washington, Pennsylvania)

This is the note that I have in my family tree from the family Bible:

Moved to Washington County Pennsylvania 1792. Believed to be drowned at sea off the coast of South Carolina in a great storm in the fall of 1803. Probably the brother of Jacob Lindley the first president of Ohio University.

Book about Lindley Family
I wanted to let you know that I recently published a book J. Van Lindley - His Ancestors, Life and Legacy. Please pass this information on to any Lindley descendants who you feel may be interested.

If anyone is interested in learning more, I have a summary below and at the following link:

https://www.createspace.com/3636138

Summary:
J. Van Lindley’s ancestors were some of the early pioneers in America. They moved from England to Ireland, then on to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Indiana. At each turn they intersected with great historical events - pre-Revolution, Revolution, Civil War and the Industrial Revolution.

This book covers 5 sections:

⁃	Introduction: This section includes a short introduction and insight into the origin of the family name.
⁃	Early and then Immediate Ancestors: The interesting lives of J. Van Lindley’s ancestors are explored, including:
⁃	Thomas Lindley, Sr. (1705-1781), who married Ruth Hadley donated the land and started the Quaker church Spring Friends Meeting in central NC and on whose land the “Battle of Lindley Mill” was fought. The full battle and events leading up to it are described in detail.
⁃	Thomas Lindley, Jr. (1740-1833), who married Sara Laughlin Evans and Margery Buckingham and donated the land in 1800 and started the Quaker church South Fork Friends Meeting in central NC
⁃	Aaron Lindley (1768-1853), who married Phoebe McPherson and owned land in both North Carolina and Indiana
⁃	Joshua Lindley (1804-1881), who married Judith Henley and Mary K. Owen, and one of the first Nurserymen in Indiana and North Carolina
⁃	J. Van Lindley: His life is explained in detail, based upon available historical facts and supplemented with family histories.
⁃	John Van Mons Lindley (1838-1918), who married Mary Coffin and Sandia Cook, and became the largest Nurseryman in North Carolina with over 20,000 customers and founder of many businesses, including Jefferson-Pilot Insurance and Pomona Terra Cotta (which supplied pipes for most of the sewers in NC from 1888-1970)
⁃	Legacy: J. Van Lindley left a large legacy, which spread, to many within his family and throughout his community of Greensboro and, through his companies, across the United States for many years following his death.
This is fantastic information. I have spent hours trying to find Bessie's death information and her family info. Knowing that she has a brother William will help to find her on previous census records. Funny, I estimate their marriage for 1904 just before Alton was born. I estimated her death in Oklahoma, wondering if was during childbirth when Lois was born. I will go to Findagrave.com to search for her burial information. You mentioned you found her as Bessie Elizabeth. On which record did you find this? Do you have access to a scanner to send a copy of the marriage license and a copy of her brother William? If yes, I will reply to an old email we last exchanged. Thanks you so much.

I have a copy of the marriage license of Bessie Green and S J Lindley (Samuel James). They were married the 15 March 1904 in Kerr County Texas. They were married by Julius Real, Judge of Kerr County. Brssie was born in 1883, but I have not found where yet. I have found her as Bessie Elizabeth, but not sure that is her middle name as Bessie was also a nickname of Elizabeth. Bessie had a brother William and I have a picture of him. Bessie died 31 May 1916 at Mountain Air, Torrance Co. New Mexico. I have been there but could not find a grave site. Cecil had a picture he had taken in 1951 of her gravesite, but I don't know who has it now. Samuel did not put headstones on any of his graves.

more confusion William Lindley 1830's/40's GA

Looking for information on William Lindley:

William Lindley's widow Margret Elizabeth was given land in MS based on William's service in Captains Lucas and Mean's companies in the Georgia Militia during the "Florida War" (Indian Wars-1820-40's)... (just found these land bounty records and confirmed Margret's husband's name!)

Margret Elizabeth (age 30) is listed as head of household in the 1850 census for Winston Co., MS with the following children:
James Franklin age 13 born GA
Charles E. age 11 born GA
John age 9 born GA
Newton age 7 born GA
Mary age 5 born GA
Elisha Hamilton age 2 born MS

The family then moved to Noxubee Co., MS (next door to Winston) and is listed in remaining censuses (1860 up)
James, Charles, John and Newton were Confederate soldiers-Charles died in the war

James Franklin was living in the home of his son Charles Edward Lindley in Nox.Co. in the 1910 census. My grandmother was Charles' daughter Kittie Mae Lindley Taylor (b: 1900; d: 1975). My grandmother took several trips with her sister, Nannie, to visit family in Cobb Co., GA in maybe the 1940's and 1950's and she wrote to family there.

I have "The First Hundred Years" a book about the history and families of Cobb Co., Ga and the Lindley family names there match all the names here in MS --

What I need is the name of William's parents and a record of his marriage to Margret Elizabeth .. and her parents ...

Based on Margret's age in 1850 her birth year is around 1820, she married young and was married by 1837 (James' birth year).

Several Williams floating around marrying in GA about that time, but they all seem to be taken! Any ideas??

I am trying to find out some information about my Great Great Grandfather, David Lindely. He was born in the Guisborough area and then lived in an Orphanage in the Guisborough or Knaresbrough area until he was approximately 18-20 years old when he moved to County Durham to Marry my Great Great Grandmother Elizabeth Coulson, they then went on to have 11 Children! Two of the Children are still alive one of which is my Grandmother Ethel Mellor nee Lindley and my Great Aunt Alice Mellor nee Lindley - would like to hear from anyone that this may sound famililar to. I would love to find some record of the Orphanage David Lindley was from and maybe his parents and the reason he was in the Orphanage... no idea where to start?!

Mandy Mellor

Hiya
I have a full tree leading from Frank to William Lindley (my first cousin 4 times removed) whose son was John C and his son Frank John - who I assume is your ancestor.

At the same time, I also have the Charles Lindley and Prudence Graville story, who were around at the same time as William in Wisconsin - BEaver Dam rather than Fox Lake and were related....their descendant was William G Lindley.

I would be interested in making contact and sharing information, as I have managed to amass a reasonable picture of both these families, but obviously struggling to link to relatives who are alive and well!

Rev Andy Lindley
PS My parents still live on the common family farm in the UK.
