I've had trouble getting subscribed to the list, but this grant, of which I downloaded a copy several years ago as well, is downriver from the Blue Licks, where Lexington Ky, is now. I have the book on the Pattersons and particularly Robert Patterson and his wife Elizabeth. Her brothers, were Rangers with Patterson in the Rev War and then went from their home at Tinkling Spring, PA To Cumberland County, tarried for a time at Fort Pitt and then went downriver, leaving relatives in various places along the way. Susan is right, I don't believe we have ever traced this line to a living Lindsay. Robert Patterson and his wife, Elizbeth Lindsay Patterson eventually moved on to Montgomery County, Ohio, near Dayton. I believe at least one of her brothers was killed at the battle of Blue Licks.

Barbara, are you the daughter or niece of Eleanor Paul Searles. Eleanor is who I got most of my info on the Lindsay family from. We corresponded after the McKeesport Heritage Center connected us. Margaret was not born in McKeesport, but in East Deer. I have the obits for Rachel Dougherty (Doty), Oliver Lindsay, Jr. and Margaret Moon. Also, Annie Lindsay Jones and Olie Lindsay Paul. Oliver and Margaret are also in the 1870 census in Allegheny, PA with a daughter Mary C. Mary is not in later censuses.

Oliver died April 30, 1902

Margaret's parents were William H. Moon and Sarah Hoak. William moved to McKeesport and married Emma after Sarah's death.

Sheila

my e-mail address is smaranyos@yahoo.com.

Re: Oliver Lindsay (b.1842)Civil War Steubenville, OH to McKeesport, PA

Oliver Lindsay is my gg grandfather on my mother's side. Info I have is that Oliver Lindsay Jr. m. Margaret Moon July 1865. She was born Aug 10, 1847, McKeesport, PA. Died Sept 9, 1921 McKeesport, PA. Buried Richland cemetery in McKeesport in Annie Jones' plot--as I am sure you must be aware. I did not know there were six children, as I only have record of two that show up in the 1880 census. Things get complicated because 1890 census is not available. I've seen dates of death vary (April 4, 26, 30) for Oliver Lindsay Jr.

I have this for Oliver Lindsay's parents:

Father: Oliver Lindsay
b. abt 1820 Ohio
d. 1842 Bellaire, OH

Mother: Rachel Doty
b. 1816 Ohio
d. Dec 4 or 5, 1894

Rachel Doty's parents:
Father: Job Doty
b. Late 1790's, Coventry, England

Mother: Elizabeth (Betsy?)

This is as far as I've gotten. Some of this information comes from family files, and the rest is through what I've found in records.

I would be interested in sharing research. There is more info on the Paul family, if you want to know about them too.

Barbara

Hi Glenda,

I have a William Lindsay that is born in Fintona, Tyrone, Ireland either 1794 or 1800 - depending upon which source you trust. I wonder if he might be related to your Lindsay's. I don't imagine that Fintona is so large that it would exclude the possibility that all the Lindsays there are related.

My William crossed over with the Crawfords that eventually ended in Adams county Ohio. He appears to be the only Lindsay to made it here, coming here with his wife's family.

If you are still active on this site, maybe we can compare notes.

Randy

While cleaning up some genealogy files ran across a deed dated Dec 2, 1785 that I downloaded from the Uni of Va archives several years ago. The document is actually a land warrant that shows Wm Lindsay was granted 293 acres of land in Fayette Co Virginia. In the land description it is mentioned that a James Lindsay owns land adjacent to the 293 acres warranted to Wm. You can probably still download the document from Uni of Va archives but I would be happy to forward the three page document if you do not find it.

Ray Lindsey

I am contacting you as a result of your response to the query for the "Professor W.L. Lindsay, Musical Prodigy". My interest was tweaked, because you spoke of your white Lindsays who were slave holders. Do you know if any of these persons either removed to Texas or possibly sent their slaves to friends/associates in Texas, before or during the Civil War? There are stories that some of my African Americans came to TX during the war. I am not sure how much truth there is in this story, but I am interested in exploring it. My people were in Fayette County (the LaGrange area) of Texas. Some reported that they were from Kentucky, but there is still the story - and there was a white Lindsay family (Levingston), who lived in Fayette County and was married to a woman who did come from Kentucky.

Any help you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Marsha

William Alexander Lindsay of Kane Co., IL

I am trying to establish a connection in my ancestry. I am descended from Joseph Lindsay (1793-1873) and Olive Wolcott through their son William Alexander Lindsay (1824-1905). I have not been able to find anything to document that William was their son. They lived in Cobourg, Canada, where William was born, then moved to Campton, Kane Co., Illinois. Any help documenting this link would be greatly appreciated!!

Researching my Great Great Granfather. He was Ojibiway but obviously there had to be a Lindsay in the past who created him with an Indian woman. They lived on the Dalles Reserve near Kenora Ontario. Does anyone have a relative who travelled to northwestern Ontario. I'm assuming as well his father must have been named Thomas, but do not know for sure. Any help would be appreciated. This would be the early 1800's.

An excellent question! I used to take research for granted, and now I am interested in sources. I cannot prove that Elijah Linsday is the father of Courtland Linsday. However, I do have the probate file of Elijah Linsday who died in 1844. It does state that Miriam Linsday is the wife of Elijah Linsday, and Courtland Linsday was the administrator of the estate (as well as Justice of the Peace). Of course they had no birth records in the early 1800s so I would assume someone out there has an old family bible with this information in it. The question: who has the family bible, or where can a copy be obtained? I wish you the best of luck, and if you find anything out, I would be happy to receive it as well.
