Hello Peter -
I am a desc. of Emanuel's nephew Theodore (son of Uriah) who immigrated to America in 1879. I have extensive information on the earlier generations at Westonzoyland derived from the Westonzoyland parish records, having visited there and the County record office at Taunton.
Emanuel died July-Sep 1893 at Westonzoyland and Elizabeth died Jan-Mar 1910 at Westonzoyland.

I can add to your list of children for Emanuel and Elizabeth their daughter Alice Gould Ling, b. Oct-Dec 1858. She appears with her parents in the 1861 and 1871 census - but then I lose track of her (unless she is the Alice G. Ling who married James Brownlie in 1878 at Sydney, Australia???). The eldest daughter Eveline is with her widowed mother at Westonzoyland in the 1901 census - so probably never married. Emmeline married Charles Willcox in 1882. I can't find them in future census, but their son Charles b. 1882 is living with his aunt Clothilde Puddy in the 1901 census. Colthilde was married in 1882 to Sidney Symes Puddy. They lived at Ashcott, Somerset - and never had children. Sydney was a baker & farmer and in later census they had various baker journeymen living with them. Arthur James Ling is with his parents in the 1871 and 1881 census but I then lose track of him. The youngest son Victor is living with his sister Clothilde in the 1891 and 1901 census.

Tell me more about the Australia history of this family. Emanuel had his two youngest brothers Walter and Frederick die near Melbourne, Australia in 1853 - I assume as part of the gold rush.

Hi,

My Great Great Grand-Father was Emanuel Ling born 1820 (give or take a year) Westonzoyland Somerset England.

His wife was Elizabeth Gould, they had 6 children one of them being Frederick Walter who migrated to Australia arriving Melbourne in January 1883

According to a census in 1881 they all lived on Beerway Farm, Shapwick, Somerset, England

The census listing was as follows (I've noted their approximate year of birth) :-
Emmanuel Ling aged 61 (my GGGF)DoB c1820 (Westonzoyland, Somerset)
Elizabeth Ling (nee Gould) aged 55 (my GGGM)DoB c1826 (Glanvilles, Wooton, Dorset ?)
Eveline Ling aged 32 DoB c1849
Emmaline Ling aged 30 DoB c1851
Frederick W(walter) Ling aged 26 (my GGF)DoB c1855
Colotilde Ling aged 20 DoB c1861
Arthur J Ling aged 16 DoB c1865
Victor Ling aged 11 DoB c1870

What I've discovered is that the family lived at Beerway up until approx 1895 when the farm was purchased by the Jenkins but apart from Frederick Walter Ling I know nothing about what happened to the rest of the family
I do have some information on the ancestors of Emmanuel Ling but I haven't as yet verified it

I was wondering if you had any information on Emanuel and Elizabeth and their other children or a family tree you can send me

Regards,
Peter

William Francis Ling was my great great grandfather. The info I've managed to gather has his dob as April 1847 in Ohio. His son, William Ling, married Loretta Rowe and their daughter, Grace Humphrey was my grandmother. If you have any additional info that you'd be so kind as to share I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks.

Hi,

I too am searching for Lings, but different line to yours I think. I did however come across a site that has photos of all the headstones of the Lings in the Morpeth cemetery, including West Morley and others. It is http://cemindex.arkangles.com/inscriptions.php

I hope this helps.

I had been told through family stories that my Lings are related to the Hunter Valley Lings, but I cannot prove this as yet. The story was two brothers came to Australia, one came to Newcastle, the other to the Hunter Valley, and then the families started from there. Do you have anything that may collaborate this storey?

I am stuck at Jonathan Henry Ling, b 1836, England, came to Australia some time before 1875, when he married Fanny Stokes in Echuca, vic. They eventually worked their way up to Bowral. If you ever come across anything that matches him, please let me know.

Regards
Kelly Bartley (nee Ling)

Your search is going to be long and hard especially if you don't know where to start as I did. The best thing that I could have done was to start asking some of the older family members for exact names, DOB, DOD, and last known locations of their immediate family. With this I was able to start a tree and other things started to fall into place. Good luck if you need any help let me know and I will try to help as much as possible.

Hi there,

Some years on from your original post I know, and hopefully you still post here:

My father's mother was Hilda May Ling, daughter of West Morley Ling, son of Abraham Ling, youngest son of West and Mary Ling and brother of Henry, Mary, George, Bartholomew, Ebenezer and Samuel who were assisted immigrants on the Fortitude in 1849, so I guess we're related in some way. Do you have any further info??

It looks like they arrived in Moreton Bay and at some stage at least Abraham moved to Maitland.

Abraham married Lucy Jane Towns, and had West Morley Ling (+ 3 others).
West Morley Ling married Elsie Evelyn Maud Smith and had Hilda May Ling (+ Ivy Ling).
Hilda May married Richard Lyons Rutherford and had my father (+ others) Richard Lyons Rutherford.

Katrina,

I was born and raised in CapeBreton, and grew up in NewWaterford, my mother's maiden name was Ling, she is the daughter of Malcolm, he is still living 85 years old now. I came through my Ling info from him and filled in the rest with the 1881 and 1901 Canadian Census as well as the BDM archives of NovaScotia. My grandfather Malcolm was the son of John Thomas Ling, son of Thomas James, son of Lawrence, son of James Ling. This James Ling is the earliest Ling you mentioned in your post. James Ling is found in the 1881 census, he was born in Ireland about 1800, I was never able to find the year he came to NS, but it was before any of his children were born. I hope this clarifies our relation, if your first James Ling is the one born 1800, we are fifth cousins once removed. It is a fairly rare name, to my knowledge my moms family was the only Ling family in CapeBreton. As for James Ling, I was never able to learn much more about him. My dad's family the MacEachern's I traced back to the mid 1700's in Mull, Scotland. I have extensive info on both sides of my family tree. Look forward to hearing from you. I hope this helps.

Ian MacEachern

Sorry so long in getting back to you.. I haven't really been researching lately.

Lings are indeed a relation of me.. My name is Katrina Tarin Ling, daughter of John Wayne Ling, son of William Francis Ling, son of Alexander Ling, son of John James Ling, son of James Ling..

I have found a John Thomas Ling in my line, son of Joseph Bernard Ling? I don't really have any other info on him besides his name and birthdate. Could this be a relation?

John,

Thanks for the update.. I had thought Nova Scotia might be as far as I could go back.. I had basically given up on this line.. lol. How did you come across this information, have you found any connections besides the name?

I'm doing good.. taking my gr. 7's to camp tomorrow.. should be fun. Hope all is well with you.

Sounds like we are indeed cousins.. I have some info on the children of Lawrence that I got from a cousin, but nothing really on your line..

Like you I have not been able to get further back than James Ling.. I don't have any census info on him because I have him dying in 1871, but I have census info on John James Ling, his son.. I descended from him.

Would love to see some information on your line.. you can email me at sapphire8blue@hotmail.com

I thought I had most of the Ling family in my research - but I don't have your grandfather listed. Can you send me more information? The only Theodore Lings that I have are Theodore Ling, b. 1787, son of Marmaduke and Mary (Smith) Ling of WZ and Theodore Ling, b. 1842, son of Uriah Ling (a nephew of Theodore b. 1787). My Theodore Ling lived in the village of Mark until they immigrated to Iowa in 1879. There is another Ling branch that immigrated to Detroit, MI in the early 1900s. There are also numerous Hook and Fisher relatives in Illinois and Iowa. Again, I'll gladly share what I have. Contact me directly.

Anita -
Exactly how do you tie to the Ling family of Westonzoyland? I have extensive information on all of the family and will gladly share if you contact me directly.
(mpaulsen@bwig.net) I have been to WZ a few times - the monuments for the Ling family in the church are very impressive for us descendents. Do you know if there is a history book for the town of Weston Zoyland? There is a reference to the early Ling family in the Victoria History of Somerset, vol. 6.

Hi Kate,

I havent got a James Ling, these are what i have ,
Mabel c1876, Marmaduke c1878,Kate c1879,Leopald c1882, Edgar c1885, Theodore c1888, I havent got any baptisms for these, There seems to be a lot of Lings not on the church records, But i think these may have been baptised Methodist, but the chapel has now closed and i have been unable to find out what has happened to the records,
They have not been deposited at Taunton record office,

All i know about Sidneys Parents is they were cousins that married, Harriet Ling c1820 daughter of Edgar c1785 and her husband James Ling c1818 is believed to be the illegitamate son of Leopald c1790, Sidneys wife Emma Peppards family were all methodist,My link is through frederick Ling c1784 his wife Susanna Howe is my 2nd Gt Grand Aunt,

The Ling Name is still being carried on in Westonzoyland there was a boy born 26th april 2007,he is Related to all 3 Theodore Lings i have in my tree,

There was a lot of scandel in 1877 ,Sarah Ling c1827 wife of Charles Ling c1824 (cousins) and their son Ernestine, were involved in a Inquest case,
four men drowned in a boat accident, and one other survived, 3 of the 4 men that died were my relatives, including my gt grandfather, Great Uncle, and the 3rd being my 2nd cousin, the one who survived was my Great Uncle,

Other than that i havent come across anything else, but now i will start looking,!!!!!!
If you email me and let me know what i may have that you need, i will gladly share it with you,
ammor1969@msn.com

Anita

Hi,

I have a couple of paper back books about the village of Westonzoyland, written by a local Author, But no Lings are mentioned in them,I also have a few other books about different villages around here, But No Lings are mentioned in any of them,
My links are with Mary Wynn wife of Marmaduke Ling (1789 )
and another link is Susanna Howe wife of Frederick Ling (1784 )
Mary Wynn is my 2nd Gt Grand Aunt, and Susana Howe is my 3rd Gt Grand Aunt,
The latest Ling ( boy ) was born in Westonzoyland, 26th April 2007,
He is related to all three Theodore Lings I have in my Tree,
So the Ling line is being carried on in Westonzoyland,

Not many people know that Sarah Ling c1827 daughter of Marmaduke Ling (1789 ) and wife of Charles Ling ( 1824 )
together with her son Ernestine were involved in a inquest, Four men had drowned in a boat accident,3 of the men that died were my relations including my gt Grandfather,Gt Uncle, and my 3rd gt cousin,The only Survivor was my Gt Uncle,It was at a time of great flooding,And Sarah and Ernestine had been accused of cutting the chain on the lock and using the boat, they were late coming back from there errand, so it made it a lot later for these men to go to collect a passenger (baker )with some flour,I have copies of newspaper items that were reprted in the paper 1n 1877,

Also Harriet Ling (1820 )daughter of Edgar (1785 )married James Ling (cousin )believed to be the son of Leopald Ling (1790 )and Honor Somer,They married in 1841 in Bridgwater,
It seems this family of brothers were not keen on marrying before they had a few children,

There are no baptism records for lots of the Lings,
A few were buried Methodist,

Anita

I see him with this family in the 1891 and 1901 census. This matches with a birth registration for Waletr Vowles Ling, Bridgewater registration district, June Quarter 1883 ( Volume 5c, Page 367).
Also, someone has listed a Guy Ling on the IGI as being born 15 June 1839, Bridgewater, Somerset and died 11 January 1914.
From FreeBMD [ http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ ]:
Births Sep 1839 Ling,Guy Bridgwater 10 309
Deaths Mar 1914 Ling,Guy age 74 Bridgwater 5c 493
Marriages Mar 1867 LING,Guy Axbridge 5c 859
Vowles,Delila Axbridge 5c 859

On the FreeBMD website you can find information about ordering copies of any of the referenced certificates.
But it may provide more clues to family along with earlier UK census data.
Walt O'Dowd
Rushmere St Andrew
Suffolk
England

My grandfather Theodore was born in WZ in1888, youngest son of Sidney (born1847). His brothers were Marmaduke, Leopold ,Edgar and James. There was also a sister Kate. Lookig at the 1891 census it does appear that there were two ling families living in Wz in the 19th century. My grandfather came from a comfortable home but I get the impression that the Ling's social status had declined in the 19th century but that the name still carried weight locally. My grandfather was not only the youngest but also not too bright and was married off to the daughter of an immigrant merchant who was given a significant dowry including property. This greatgrandfather who operated from Taunton clearly sought a connection with a "good" local family and even in the early 20th century the Lings were highly regarded.Quite separately, my father had a relative who fled Enland, possibly in the mid 19th century. We don't know exactly what he had done but though he wrote home he didn't even say which town he was living in. My father had one of his letters and thought he could be in Chicago. Any suggestions?Kate

Anita, my grandfather was born in1888 in Westonzoyland the youngest son of Sidney(born 1847) and his brothers were Marmaduke, Edgar ,Leopold and I think James ; he had a sister Kate (who I am named after).Great aunt Kate owned a dairy in Taunton. My father was not very forthcoming about his uncles nor his grandparents though they didn't live far away. All he told me was that he had cousins in the Poulden hills. My father (Edgar George had 2 brothers, James who later lived in Stogursey and Theo who died many years ago. Kate

There are loads of lings leaving around westonzoyland. My grandfather Theodore was born the youngest of seven at the manorhouse there. We believe the american connection was through one of his uncles who got into trouble and fled england. My father had a letter he sent the family in which he described the city he was living in though he did not give its name . The family guessed it night be Chicago. In the 1950s my parents consulted the parish records and discovered that during the civil war James Lyng had succoured the kings men, also that they had been significant tax payers since very early on. Many years later we went back but we were not able to locate the parish records.L

The Ling family has not died out in westonzoyland. My grandfather Theodore was born there in the 1880s , the youngest of a large family that was still"gentry".While there are no family living there now there are manyliving in the area around . My grandfather farmed near Taunton as did several other relatives. We believe that a branch of Lings in America are descended from an uncle of his who fled England in the early? 19th century after getting into serious trouble. My Father had a letter written by him to his family in England .He didn't want to reveal his whereabouts which is why my Father believed (plus family gossip)that he had committed a serious crime. In his letter he described the place he was living in and from the descripion and again gossip my father thought he was living in chicago.

I sent an email, but I am unsure if you received it. Thank you so much for all of the information that you sent. The Ling family lines are wonderful, I'm excited to get so much information at one time...I can see that you have done a lot of work...wow! Did you obtain the Pre-Guy Ling information directly from the Westonzoyland Church? I have tried to find some documentation to add to my notes as I enter your information into my program, but so far I haven't found anything. Are there published parish records or indexes,or anything like that that I can use to document your findings? If you extracted the material directly from the church(s) I could enter that in as my documentation, if you could give me the name(s) and addresses of the churches. Thanks again for all of your help!
