I am not showing a Amelia Lingar in Bell County. That doesn't mean anything though, since many times people went by middle names or nicknames.

Bell County Lingars are generally related to James Harvey Lingar who migrated up from Claiborne County, TN about 1893-1894. But that is not always true since the family branches moved back and forth freely once the roads over the Cumberland Gap opened up.

I tried to look for a marriage record for a Lingar to a Thompson, however, the records I have access to do not cover that period.

You might want to post a query to the Bell County board to see if you can find a marriage record for Amelia Lingar to Mr. Thompson. Marriage records in this time period usually list the parents.

Hope this helps.

Michele

Hello.

I did a quick online search and I did not find an Amelia Lingar in the 1910 census. However, that doesn't mean anything.

Do you know what parts of KY and TN she lived in? Also, did she have a middle name? Those bits of information might help locate her and her parents.

Do you have a death certificate for her?

Michele
(ggranddaughter to Phebe Ellen Lingar Baker)

My great grandmother was Amelia Lingar her daughter was Anna Thompson. I have no idea what her husband name was. they are all from the KY and TN area. I am guessing that she was born around the turn of the 1900's since my grandmother was born in 1934. I know she had many brothers and sisters but can't recall for certain if My memory is correct. I know that there is Cherokee Indian blood but not certain if it is from her or her hubby.

thank you all for reading this.
zididayjo

John Lingar (ca 1777-1828) - Naturalization/Declaration of intent record

Hello, all.

I was searching on Ancestry.com to see if any new records might have been added. I searched on John Lingar (ca 1777-1828) and came up with an interesting find.

In 1793, there is a record for a John Lingar in the Eastern District Court of Virginia around the Norfolk area. It was noted in a book whose notation is as follows:

WINGO, ELIZABETH B., and W. BRUCE WINGO. 1784-1884: 100 Years. Naturalizations and Declarations of Intention, Norfolk Borough/City, Norfolk County (Now Chesapeake), Princess Anne County (Now Virginia Beach), Portsmouth, Eastern District Court, Virginia. Norfolk, VA: Wingo, 5916 Powhatan Avenue, Norfolk 23508, 1987. 109p

I found this in the "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s" database on Ancestry.com.

I know one of the biggest questions in Lingar research is where did John Lingar come from.

Does anyone have access to either the book noted above or the actual court records in the Norfolk area? Or has someone already researched this and come up with any results?

Thanks,
Michele

Does anyone have a legible 1880 Claiborne County Census that they transcribe for me? I cannot read my copy and cannot enhance it enough to read it.
Lingar/Lyngar, etc.

Grasping for straws, I recently posted a message to the Melungeons board, asking if the Lingar/Lyngar name could be a variant of a Melungeons name. Joanne responded and provided a link to a petition of 1794. Although, there are no Lingar/Lyngar (etc) names listed, there is a name of LINAGER. Since there is no available information that precedes John Lingar Sr., this may be one avenue to look into. Finally, what is most intriguing to me, is my great grandmother China Lee Lingar Hall’s mother is/was Jessie/Hessie Shoemake/Shumat/Shoemaker; on a legal document that China completed for SS administration, she has listed Hessie Shoemake; on this petition is the surname SHEWMAKE. I have included Joanne’s response to my question as well as the link to the petition.

Renee

Check this petition below for 1794 in Marion Co., SC which border North Carolina. I've been looking for someone who might know something about this Linegar family. The other names on that petition went to Hancock/Claiborne area -- Newman's Ridge-- and some went on to Hamilton Co., Tenn where they were later referred to as "Melungeons." Good straw :-)

Joanne

Link: http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/petition1794.html
Did Marie "Mollie" Lingar Phillips have a brother named Robert Lingar? Robert's WWII registration card lists Mollie Phillips of Hartman, as the person most likely to know where he is. She is too young to be his mother, and too old to be his daughter. I am looking for John Jesse Lingar in 1900 census to confirm, but have not found him. In 1910 he was called Bud and 1920 John J. His mother's name was Elizabeth Greer daughter of Jesse F. Greer of Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co. TN and his father was Robert Lingar son of Sarah and John Lingar. Cyndy

Her name is Katherine Stricklin in Coal Hill Arkansas. My mother was Marie Phillips, daughter of John Phillips and Mollie Lingar. Their father was John Jesse Lingar. Good Luck

Penny, I am also a Lingar descendant of Louis, a brother of Leander and trying to fill in blank spots on my family tree. Do you have birth and death dates for Charles H. and places of birth and death? I would also like the names of his children. I have just read the names of Leander's wives on this site and I had no idea who they were. Do you know if they all died, which would be why he married 4 times? Thanks for any information you can give me.
I have the tree going very well for Louis if you need any of that. Barbara

Surname Lingar

My mother is a Lingar. Her grandfather's name was Lee Ander Lingar (or Leander) who had been married several times and had many children. He did have a daughter named Dicy and a son, Vernie. I don't have birthdates for either of them. My grandfather, Charles H. was born in 1872 and I remember his talking of a stepmother.
Leander's parents were John "Jack" Lingar and Sarah (Sally) Chumbly. My grandfather used to tell me that he was one-quarter Indian, but I don't know which tribe.

Leander was married 4 times. His wives' names were Mace Phipps, Barbara Hess Fitch, Mariam Hazelwood and Mary Ellen. Barbara was his mother and she died before 1882. Mariam (Marcum?)Hazelwood had these children: Robert, Vernie, and Dicie (Jennie).

Back in 1996 I got a letter from someone in Tennessee who had done a lot of work on this family. The state of Tennessee was putting together a list of First Families and were issuing certificates to those who were there by 1790. She was trying to find some proof.

I will try to reestablish contact with her. I put my genealogy work aside when I moved and have just gotten back into it.

I would say that we are related.

I ran across a great website that is correct for my grandmother's family (as far back as we knew it to be). This site is very complete. There was an error (where my Grandmother was mistakenly identified as Minnie Lingar and had a Mr. Baker included in her record together with my Grandfather, C.H. Lingar. It was an honest mistake because there was a Minnie Lingar who was the daughter of James Harvey and Elizabeth (Lester) Lingar, who was married to a Jason Baker.
Be prepared to stay at this site for a long time. You will be thrilled. www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/jhunter/d4063.htm

According to that Hunter website, William Franklin's line went (up the line):
Jefferson Thomas Hunter,
Henry Hunter,
Jefferson Hunter,
Joseph Hunter,
Henry Hunter,
John Hunter.
I don't have much information yet about the Lingars and have had to put that work on hold for a while.
