The "Jacob Linn" that I have posted as John Linn's father is questionable; I'm still working on that. Good Luck. Paul Kreitz

Hello! I'm afraid I don't have any info on John C. Linn, but I believe you're researching the same Linn family in Tenn. that I am. My great-grandfather, J. Elijah Lee, married Catharine Linn. His brother Jesse G. Lee married Melvina Linn, and their brother Joel D. Lee married Elizabeth J. Linn. The Lees lived in Todd Co., KY and their wives were all from TN. The Lee brothers also had a sister Martha Lee, born about 1842. The Lee brothers and their wives moved to Jefferson Co. IL between 1870 & 1880. My gr-grandparents, J. Elijah Lee & Catharine, moved to Arkansas sometime between 1900 & 1903, settling in Greene Co., AR. I've not been able to find the Linn family before they married the Lee boys. It has been frustrating. I did find Melvina Linn on One World Tree (with no parents given) and beside her name it says "Cherokee Christian Name". There is no name given to contact about this, so I don't know if the Linns had Cherokee blood or what. I'm about convinced their family is not in the 1850 or 1860 censuses. I'd like to hear from you. I've not been able to connect with anyone else researching this Linn family (I'm just assuming this is the same one).

I have a tin type picture of a man with a mustashe. I am looking for someone who also has a picture of him and can match their picture to mine or they can identify him on sight (long shot, I know). I believe he may be James Linn (b. 1840 Glasgow MO - d. 1919 Chariton County MO) husband of Mary Irene Morrain (Morain) (b. 1847 Chariton Co. MO - d. 1903 Glasgow MO). James children were: Mattie, James Denny, John, Frank E. and Susan Sarah. James father came from Virginia.
Would like to know about James father (believe also a James - mother probably Susan) and the identity of the man in the picture.

Linn/Lynn connection to Kelther or Sloman

I am trying to connect to a Linn line with origins in Virginia in the 1700's or earlier. There may be a connection by marriage with Sloman or Kelther in the mid
1800's. I am particularly interested in a Frank (Francis)
Linn/Lynn or Frank Sloman. I believe that Sloman was a
step-father. 1895 finds Frank Sloman in New Jersey.
I am working from DNA that points to Linn ancestry.

Thank you for your info on the Flynn DNA group. I checked there and found a match for all the points(?) that I had had tested EXCEPT for one. Looking closer I'm not certain that they are the same. It's Y-GATA-H4 on the Flynn listing and Y-GATA-H4.1 on my listing. Are they the same? The numbers are 10 and 21 respectively. Does that indicate a match off by 1 or by 11?

I have found a closer match in Ancestry DNA that indicates a Lynn line that migrated from Virginia>NorthCarolina>Kentucky>Indiana >.. Would I need to investigate all the family lines to try to find the one I'm looking for?
I'm not certain how to proceed.

There are 1 and maybe 2 stepfathers involved in the line I'm tracing. I'm trying to determine the father of Francis (Frank) Linn Beahm. I've found that Beahm is definitely his stepfather. (1910 census). A previous marriage of his mother(Emma Whitehead) to a Frank Sloman in 1895(NJ) seemed to indicate Sloman as his father. Have been unable to trace this Frank Sloman(born~1869). DNA now points to a Linn/Lynn ancestor. This ancestor must have been known to Emma and Frank Sloman since middle name is Linn. (Sloman's birth father?) Sloman's father was Charles and his mother's maiden name was Kelther.(marriage record)
Therefore, I am trying to find a link with the names Linn/Lynn, Sloman and Kelther.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Marcie
mlbeahm@hotmail.com

My great grandfather (Houston Lynn 1842-1882) came from PA (family earlier in NC)to KY just after 1860. He traveled with a cousin also surname Lynn. Do not know his parents' names. Anyone have any indication of a Houston in their research?

Bessie Fay Linn - Pennsylvania

I have a letter that Bessie Fay Linn wrote to her cousin, Ralph Rodgers, in June 1894, when she was 8. Ralph is the brother of my ggrandfather.

The letter mentions an Aunt Lizzie, and cousins James and Sadie. Bessie wrote West Newton, PA on the top of the letter but mentions she lives in the country and goes to school in town.

I would like to find out more about the Linn's in PA. Ralph's mother was Elizabeth Linn (Davis) Rodgers, b. 1865 in West Newton, PA. Her parents were Elliot Davis and Mary Elizabeth Linn.

I think Bessie and Ralph may have been second cousins. Ralph's first cousins on his mother's side would have been Davis'. Since Bessie's last name was Linn, she may have been a grandchild of Mary Elizabeth Linn's brothers.

If anyone has any information on this line of Linn's, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Hugh Linn (1705?-1786 in Rowan Co., NC)

Presumably this is the Hugh Linn who settled on Cold Water Creek, Rowan County in 1770. Many researchers believe that he came to Cold Water Creek from Old Chester County, PA. They believe he first married Margaret Houston daughter of Christopher Huston who died 1726. Christopher's will identifies a soninlaw Hugh Linn, but doesn't indicate the name of the daughter who married him. The will of his son Samuel identifies Samuels sisters using their married surnames. Several of them married Linn's; Samuel doesn't identify their husbands names, but by comparing Christopher's and Samuel's wills, we can gather that Hugh Linn married Margaret Huston.

Many people identify her as "Mary Huston", but Christopher did not have a daughter Mary, at least one mentioned in any of the wills. This is commonly explained away. It is likely that there are records in Rowan County that identify Hugh's wife as a "Mary". In order to match up with the Hugh Linn mentioned in Christopher's will they assume any of several things

a) Christopher's daughter was in fact "Mary", though available evidence suggests not
b) Her full name was Mary Margaret
c) his first wife was Margaret; after her death he married a Mary

In truth there does not seem to be good evidence to suggest that Hugh Linn of Coldwater Creek came to the area from Chester County PA. Its certainly possible, but I've not found a good basis for this. One of those things which "everybody accepts" but for which, in fact, there's little supporting evidence.

It wouldn't surprize me to find that Hugh of Coldwater Creek did in fact come to the area from Old Chester County. What would surprize me is that he is the Hugh Linn who married Christopher Huston's daughter. In point of fact, there are at least four Hugh Linn's in Old Chester County, during this time period. I don't know which, if any, might in fact be Hugh Linn of Coldwater Creek. However, there is a 1758 will on record for Margaret Linn who identifies a Hugh Linn Jr. as her executor. Presumably Hugh Jr. is her son, and Hugh Sr. is presumably his father who has predeceased her. Its possible that this Margaret Linn is the daughter of Christopher Huston. In which case, her husband Hugh Linn Sr can not be the same person who settled on Coldwater Creek in 1770. That Hugh Linn might instead be his son Hugh Jr., but I don't know that Hugh Jr. ever left Old Chester. There are certainly records for a Hugh Linn in the area well after 1770 when Hugh makes his first appearance (that I know of) in Rowan County.

There is a Francis Lynn, will probated 1713 in Charles Co. Md. There is a francis Lynn who married Mary Clark in Pheledelphia in 1789. Regarding DNA have you tried ysearch.org, or the Flynn group, sponsored by familytreedna. The Flynn group contains the Lynn/Linn surnames and all its variables. If all this seems foreign to you - tell me what you have and I will see if they match anything that I am aware of.

Dear Mr. Anderson.
In 1880 census (Illinois) Swan Linn was living with my great grandfather in Bureau County. It indicated he was a brother-in-law. I would like to find out what relative he was related to. Please answer if you are interested;
Elizabeth Davis betncats@aol.com
