not sure if anyone out there has any information on another Linnell having 2 wives and 2 famillies.....I am researching Calvin Linnell. Looks like he was married to Lavinia and then Anna. With Lavinia, he had 3 (4?) children in MA and moved them to CA. He then returned to MA where he had 3 more.

I am unable to confirm this with marriage certificates, but would LOVE it if anyone else can! All I can say is, this Linnell familly certainly LOVED to multiply! WOW!

'morning Dan (here at least)
Yes Northampton seems to be Linnell Land. My ancestors were all originally from Whittlebury. One of them became an itinerant preacher for John or Charles Wesley - not sure which. Until he met a girl in Brampton where he settled down. He died there and one of the Wesleys wrote the epitaph on his gravestone. However his children returned to Whittlebury before going to London.
Have you seen this site http://web.ukonline.co.uk/cj.tolley/nch-baxter-richard.htm it gives a good insite into the religious and political situation in England at the time of your Robert.
cheers
Lesley

Lesley, thank you for the prompt reply as well. I see Whittlebury on my UK map book. That Northants. area seems to be the ancestral home of English Linnells as I have searched Weedon Bec, Kislingbury, Paulersbury, and found many Linnells dating back to the 16th Century and earlier. I can't connect them to Robert Linnell, our American immigrant who lived in London in the 1630's. The various places his London church congregation met [in secret] were mostly by the river including Southwark, Blackfriars, and Rotherhithe, but there are no records of actual residence. I suspect our Robert or his parents came from Northamptonshire, as did your people.
Dan McConnell

Dan, Thanks for the prompt reply.
Rotherhithe is on the south side of the Thames East of Tower Bridge. Southwark is west of Tower Bridge. Rotherhithe is on the docks. The area Charles Dickens wrote about - nice! A lot of it was bombed during WWII.

We have not been able to trace our family back before William Linnell in 1680. He married Mary Bull.

Whittlebury is in Northamptonshire near Silverston, where they run the car racing now a days. I have photos of the local church if you are interested. Taken in 2006. I was not able to go inside as I couldn't find the vicar with the key.

My Linnells didn't go to London from Whittlebury until about 1780. They were blacksmiths and I guess went there for work. Lots of smithing on the ships.

Sorry I do not seem to be very helpful.
cheers
Lesley

The American Linnells are descended from Robert Linnell who came to America in 1638. I have seen records of the non-conformist church of Rev. John Lothrop,in London, of which Robert Linnell was a member, that said that they frequently met in Rotherhithe. That would be in the 1630's. I have also seen records from the 1630's with other Linnells who were "of St. Olaves, Southwark". Where is Rotherhithe in London? Can you go back before 1680? Where is Whittlebury?
Dan McConnell

I meant to reply to you but I guess I didn't. So far, nearly every Linnell found in North America is a direct descendent of Robert Linnell, who came to America in 1638 with his wife Peninah Howes Linnell, to join the congregation of Rev. John Lothrop [also written Lathrop]in Scituate MA then Barnstable MA. So, your family names ring a lot of bells.
I am the family historian for the Linnell Family Association of America. I have found the records of the Lothrop church, so the membership of Robert Linnell and his wife in 1634 is new, but there are no marriage records so far. I have also found the baptismal records of Peninah Howes and several of her siblings, but no Jemimah. Personally, I don't think there is such a person.

Dear Bill. I should have read your Linnell piece first. It is very well researched. There are a couple of points on which I might advise. The supposed daughter Sarah Linnell is now pretty certain to be Sarah Larned of Charlestown, not Sarah Linnell. Some of the early histories here made that error, and then backed into Robert's probable birth date of 1584. There is no basis to estimate his age or birth date.
I have employed genealogists in Kent and London off and on for ten years. They have combed the wills and baptismal and marriage records and found no information on Robert Linnell and his first wife, so far. The IGI entries are bogus.
Dan McConnell

Hi Bill. There is a great deal written on Rev. John Lothrop and his church. Indeed it is referred to as the First Independent Church of London, which was originally under the leadership of Henry Jacob, taken over by John Lothrop in 1623. This church was in Southwark, "situated on Union Street". Rev.Lothrop came to Scituate Massachusetts in 1634, gathering together other immigrants "as had been in congregation with us before". In 1638, from his journal, " My brother Robert Linnell and his wife, came to us with a letter of dismission from our church in London". Robert Linnell married John Lothrop's sister-in-law, Peninah House. In 1639 they, as a group, settled Barnstable on Cape Cod.. Hope this is helpful.
Dan McConnell
P.S. Yes , Rev. Lothrops church was one of the oldest Congregational Churches. The Congregational church in Scituate refers to itself as the oldest continuous Congregational Church in existence. The only older congregation was the Engish Church at Leiden Holland some of which came on the Mayflower, but apparently was not continuous.

Thomas Linnell

I am looking for information on the parents or siblings of Thomas Linnell, born about 1792. He married Elizabeth Legge in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 1822. They had 8 children. Thomas died in New Ross, Nova Scotia in 1868. After his death many of his children and grandchidren began using the surname CHASE, which leads us to believe that Thomas's true name was Chase and that the children knew this. Any clues to Thomas's life before 1822 would be appreciated. I would also apppreciate learning about other LINNELLs with an Eastern Canadian connection.

DESIRE YORK LINNELL -MAINE - Native American (ABENAKI)???

Looking for info on DESIRE YORK LINNELL b. 1791 Standish,ME
d.4-22-1858 Magalloway, Maine. I need proof that she was Native American (ABENAKI). She married 1809 in Bethel, Maine ISRAEL LINNELL (b.1782 Standish,Maine, d.1871 Manchester,NH). They had a daughter: ANNA VIANA LINNELL b. 1814 (thought to be ABENAKI).She married SAMUEL LOMBARD b. 1810 Hebron,ME. DESIRE and ISRAEL also had a son, (believed to be ABENAKI), LORENZO DOW LINNELL b.1825 Bethel,ME and married PHEBE MUNSON b. 1829 Calias,ME.
My paternal and maternal lines of ancestors are the "LOMBARDS"
and the "LINNELLS", so if I can prove the race of DESIRE YORK, then it would solve the ABENAKI mystery on both sides of my family.

It is well established that Robert Linnell had two wives, but only by inference. Robert's oldest known child was David who entered the Barnstable militia in 1643 [minimum age 16], therefore born about 1627.
Peninah Howes appears in the London court records as a part of Rev. Lothrop's congregation in 1632. Peninah Howes Linnell comes with her husband, Robert Linnell, to America in 1638 with a letter of dismission from this same church, and Rev. Lothrop calls him my brother [ in-law], as he had married Hannah Howes both daughters of Rev John Howes of Eastwell Kent. Robert Linnell and wife were listed as members of Rev Lothrops church in 1634.
Therefore, Roberts first wife must have died sometime after 1627 and before he departed in 1638.
I don't know about the Mayos, but thet were likely from Orleans, MA

I received it from the NEHGS and they photocopy on very large paper, which I can't duplicate, so I will have to shrink it if I can, or else print it in pieces.Could you give me your exact zip code? since it looks like one digit is missing.

I'm not a member of the Linnell group, although I purchased the Descendants of Robert Linnell from them. I hope the next edition, if there is one, will include Phebe, Joseph Lumbard, and Asenath.

I have been going over my (old) research previously done for my Linnell lines and some questions have come to mind; hopefully someone has answers. First: Has it ever been determined for sure (excluding previous histories found, used as sources) that Robert (1) did have two wives, one of whom died in England or perhaps just after emigration? Has a pax list ever been found that would list the family members on the ship?
Second: Did Elisha Mayo have two Linnell wives - first being Hannah Linnell and after her death, a Martha Linnell? Was there a Martha Linnell? This found in : Ancestry of the Children of Robert Croll Stevens, P 146.5, FHL. (15) Jonathan 3 Linnell.....married first Elizabeth -[possibly Mayo?]; Elisha m. (2) Martha Linnell (Mayo Ms, p 26)." What is this Mayo Ms - has anyone seen it for documentation of the second marriage?

Yes- I have had all that for some time, so I can only assume that there has been nothing new in that dept for documentation/proof, etc...guess what there is is all there is on both of my families ... it was my last attempt to try to fill in blank spaces/and or try for something more positive. Always have to give it one last try before they go back on the shelf and I move on to the next ancestor with questions yet to be answered....
