I am decended from John Thomas Lindsey(Linzy) father to Robert Preston Linzy. Would like to visit with you on the Lindsey(Linzy)line. My mother said that John Thomas changed the name to Linzy. After checking with several descendants of the brothers to John, it seems they all consulted each other and changed their name. Some had the stipulation that the tombstone said Lindsey.
Tell me more about Arthur marrying a Maude Linzy. My greatgrandfather, Grady Garvin Linzy married a Maude Morris in 1917 and divorced in after 1920. She was an Indian from Oklahoma City area.
I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Linzy?Uncommon name?

There's a whole mess of them in Oklahoma. I'm not sure whether it was my great great or great grandfather that ran to Arkansas from North Caolina but he married a Cherokee Indian woman and got out right before the trail of tears, they hid out in Arkansas, the eastern part around bentonville I think. I don't know the names of their sons but my grandfathers name was John Wesley Harmon Linzy. He was born in Arkansas, somehow or another he wound up in East Tennessee where he met and married my grandmother her name was Vennie Mary Lou Virge, she had a sister named Martha that came back to Okla. with them. I do remember he had a sister named Ellen that lived in Alabama I think. Their childrens names were Frank, Fred, Jack, Ruth, Ethel,Maude and Alma.Only two are still living I think. One of my cousins played baseball for San Francisco in the early 60's then played for St. Louis. I was also told that the brothers when they was in NC had a big fight and some changed the spelling of their name Lindsay, Lindsey and of course Linzy I dont know which was the origanal. The brothers were Scotch/Irish,if red hair runs in your family you are probably part of the same.Im going to try looking up some of the other spellings to see where I get I took your email add.in case I find anything;mine is charlesnapier@poncacitynet.com . My name is Lou, my mother was Ruth.

Have not heard of any Cherokee in family. Hiram Jr.'s father was Hiram Linzy, Sr. born 1803 in in NC, married Sarah Macom. Hiram Sr.'s father was John Linzy born in 1780 prob. in NC. Thats as far as I have back. It seems with the names Linzy, Durning, and Macom, they tended to remain among Irish. Still interested to see if you have something thatI don't have.

Jimmy McLane

Bobette,

I came to this site out of curiousity. I have read several of the messages out here on the board and it appears as thoud he all share the common factor of being seperated from our family wit the exception of our immediate family.

However, with only being able to go back as far as my great grandfather, Charles Linzy, and limited knowledge of his sibling Charles Linzy the name Ersell caught my attention. My grandmother who was part Cherokee, married to Ollie Linzy, named one of her daughters Ersell.

Like Linzy, Ersell is quite unusual.

Carol J.
MARTHA LINZEY--BORN 1823 IN GEORGIA

My gggf was Benjamin M. Raley who was born in 1818 in Washington County, Georgia. His wife, Martha, was born 1/10/1823 in Georgia (I don't know which county) and died 8/10/1855 in Washington County, Florida. Ben and Martha were living in Randolph County, Georgia in 1840, so there is a possibility Martha was from that county. The death certificate for one of their daughters has Martha's maiden name as "Linzey." However, the name could have been misspelled.

If you have any information about where Martha was born and who her parents were, I would appreciate your contacting me
