Seems I can find no record of my grandmother or great grandparents, hopefully I can get a break. I am not sure which newspapers these were cut out of, I copied them letter for letter as the newspaper printed them. I found them in one of the three family bibles I have. I was told she died November 16, 1949.

MRS. SAPHRONIA PAYTON
Mrs. Saphronia Payton, died in a Morgantown hospital yesterday morning at 5:20 o'clock following a five-week illness. She was born in Doddridge county, a daughter of Christopher and Virginia Lipscomb. Her husband, Frank Payton, died Jan. 9, 1948. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Conley L Kinney of Alum Ridge, Mrs. William Crist and Mrs. Frank Plant, both of Akron, Ohio; six sons, Charles of Nixon Plaza, Ira of Akron, O., Harry, Harvey and Carl, all of Morgantown, and Bernard of Pittsburgh, Kansas; three sisters, Mrs. James Frye, Mrs. Viola Leeson and Mrs. Mary Payton, all of West Union; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Payton lived for a great many years in Clarksburg. She had resided with her son, Harvey in Morgantown since the death of her husband.
************

SECOND ARTICLE FOR HER:

MRS. SAPHRONIA PAYTON, formerly of Clarksburg, died in a Morgantown hospital Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5:20 a.m. following five weeks illness. She was born in Doddridge county, a daughter of Christopher and Virginia Lipscomb. Her husband, Frank Payton, died Jan. 9, 1948. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Corley L Kinney of Alum Ridge, Mrs. William Crist and Mrs. Frank Plant, both of Akron, Ohio; six sons, Charles of Nixon Plaza, Ira of Akron, Harry, Harvey and Carl, all of Morgantown, and Bernard of Pittsburgh, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. James Frye, Mrs. Viola Leeson and Mrs. Mary Payton, all of West Union; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist church. She had been living with her son, Harvey, in Morgantown, for the past year. Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, 443 West Pike St., where funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. Rev. William May, pastor of the Baptist church of Summit Park, will officiate. Interment in Greenlawn cemetery. Davis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
************
Saphronia had a son, Roy Payton that preceeded her in death in 1935 (my grandfather). He was working and was electicuted on top of a building in Akron.
************
From future articles: Mrs. Frank Plant is Inez, Mrs. Corley L Kinney is Eunice, and Mrs. William Crist is Delia.
************
Not a clue to who Mary Payton or Viola Leeson were married to. Not a clue as to what Mrs. James Frye's first name is.
************
Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

My grandfather moved to Lincoln County from Virginia. Most of the Lipscombs in Kanawha County were (distantly) related. I still have Civil War relics that my great-great grandfather purchased during government auctions held on siezed properties.

Do you have a story about a Lipscomb who served both North and (after being captured) South?

Randy,

Looking at the context of your post, found in the other posts within this thread, I now realize that you are refering not to THE Lipscomb book, but to the 42-page typed manuscript of Catherine Cleek Mann, which is not a book.

I will point out that Mann contributed to several Lipscomb lines in Dorothy Garr Helmer's 1979 book on the Lipscombs, and I believe that what is in the Lipscomb book is more recent and probably updated from the Mann manuscript of 1953. I have not, however, analyzed the differences.

I would be glad to make a copy of the manuscript for you. Please send me your mailing address to c andrews at mind spring dot com (removing spaces and converting to symbols where appropriate).

I have been told that Pauline Lipscomb Ernst's daughter is taking orders for a book reprint. Pauline holds copyrights to the book. Send an e-mail to lipscombbook@gmail.com. In the past the Ernsts have reprinted only a few books at a time.

Anyone serious about Lipsocmb genealogy should own this book. I bought mine years ago and use it all the time. It is not perfect and does have some errors, but it is an excellent resource. It is a large book, 8 1/2 x 11, and over 500 pages.

Hi
We belive William might have been the son of Richard Lipscombe and Ann Bates married 12 Oct 1761 Saunderton. William bap 16 Dec 1764 and Rebecca bap 11 Sep 1768, are the only 2 children found so far. Richard buried 17 Aug 1821 Princes Risborough aged 82, widower of Longwick. Ann obviously died earlier, burial not found. My family are descended from Rebecca who married John Ridgway 22 Sep 1790 Bledlow as Rebecca Litchcombe.
Sue

Hi Jill,

From the family lines I see on your pages I can't see a direct connection. The Lipcombes I have are in Longwick, Maidenhead, Clewer, Princes Risborough, St. Pancras, Windsor, and Bray in England. Some of them are in Ontario Canada as well.

The starting of my Tree is William Lipcome b.1763...but I don't know who his parents and siblings areso maybe there is a conncetion missing somewhere. Your sie was very useful and informative by the way.

Thanks,

-Mandy 8)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't see any connections in Wytham.

I should tell you that I am working off a family tree printed on paper. All it says beside William Lipcome's name is (Victualler White Horse Longwick). His wife was Rebecca Randall married Oct 12, 1789 in P. Risborough. I have no information on this sheet or where it was obtained. I found it after my grandparents passed away. I have looked for proof of this marriage and the 13 children they had with very little luck. Obviously someone worked hard on this tree as it was traced 6 generations.

Maybe we are not connected but have you seen any info like this in what you've been looking through?

Thx!

Marie,

According to entries on www.familysearch.org, the most likely place of bith of your Ambrose is Devon or Somerset.

My branch of the Lipscomb family come from Buckinghamshire and moved to Derby at a specific date. Therefore have no direct connection with other Lipscomb branches in other parts of the country.

Good Luck with your search.

Claire

Re: Lipscomb family in Buckinghamshire and Derby

Hello there,
I am an offspring of the "first" Lipscomb in America. Ambrose in theory, at Jamestown, Virginia about 1689. There are actually about 4 Lipscombs in my line, they intermmaried a lot. None of my direct line moved more than about 100 or so miles from Jamestown in these 300 years. Some others went farther, there is a Lipscomb County in Texas named after one.
I would love to know anything about my roots in the UK.
So if you are interested please let me know. Regardless, happy new year.
Marie G.
