I am just starting in on this and know very little but it is my understanding that parts of Poland during the late 19th century are now parts of many other countries. My grandfather,Joseph Liss, came to the US in the 1880's at the age of about 7. His family stayed in Buffalo,NY for a year, then moved to Chicago. His family was from Kashubia (?sp) which I understand is now a part of Germany. His father or grandfather was an officer in the calvary.
