Thank you very much Michael for clarification of a misinterpretation of our surname. As I mentioned in my last correspondence to you, I am very grateful for any authenticated info. I can get and future findings by yourself I would be very eager to have. My family seat was in Thornton Le Moors in the Parish of Elton, Nr. Helsby.
I have first hand evidence as a boy of 5 years of age
that my Great Grandfather was a Prince of a tribe of Romanys
on the Cheshire circuit, so therefore I am having great
difficulty tracking ancestory down.
Thanking you once again for
your information.
Best Wishes,
Robert

Dear Robert,
The only people I have come across who associate the Littler name with Littleover, Derby. is a company who sells the origins of family names. I have repeatedly asked them to show me evidence of this claim, but I get no reply!
I have yet to see any evidence from anyone else either. In my view they are confusing the hamlet Littler/Over [Littlover] in the county of Cheshire. Dr George Ormerod clearly gives Over as our place name in his excellent pedigree book on Cheshire families. Regards Michael

Dear M?????
My first info on the Littleover link came through the Cheshire Life magazine back in the 60s when it featured a series of Cheshire names. The article also mentioned Wallerscote Manor also the name of one " John de Littleover " who was an Archer in Richard 111s army and was granted an award of 6d a day for life for some heroic deed.
Most of my info comes from 'The Historical Research Centre'
They seem pretty accurate in their research even listing a person named Richard Littler who married Ann Knight in St James,Clerkenwell in 1660
Other refs to our surname can be found in the marriage registers of Prestbury.
Living in Spain as I do now since 1989, I can only rely on info.I pick up from where I can.
Thanks for your quick reply,
Regards,
Robert.

Dear Robert,
As far as I am concerned the name Littler came from the hamlet Littler, next to Over, near Winsford Cheshire. George Ormerod in his "History of Cheshire" published in 1820 shows the Littler pedigree going back to 1205 to "Little de Over" Cheshire.
I have found no evidence to suport the theory that Littlers came from Littleover, Derby. There is no Littler hamlet in Lancashire. The Littlers were in Wallerscote Manor for about 300 years, I have visited the site, but unfortunately the whole area is now covered to about 40 feet deep in waste potash!.

The surname LITTLER is a toponymic name, meaning that it belongs to that catagory of surnames that derive their origin from the place name where or near the original bearer was born or resided. With regards to the surname LITTLER, this is derived from the place name " Littleover "
a village in Derbyshire. The name crept over the border to Cheshire and remained firmly fixed there.Early references to the surname or to a variant date back to the xv century
and include a record of one John de Littleor who was redgistered as a resident of Cheshire in 1401. One Richard Littler is documented as living in the same county in 1582.
In Burkes General Armoury, amongst the nobility of England, can be found a record of a family by the name of LITTLER whos ancient family seat was located at Wallerscote Manor
Chestershire.

I pesonally have lived in Cheshire ( Tarvin ) most of my 75 years and have never ever come accross any mention of the village or Hamlet of LITTLER in Lancashire.

Robert Dennis Littler

Now resident in Spain

Sorting through some papers recently I found a letter from Rosemary G Muldoon sent to my parents in Glasgow in March 1999. Although I have an address for Rosemary, in the time that has passed she may have moved, so my husband looked for a link just like your's Tanya. I can tell you that Robert Wm Litter was the elder brother of my grandfather John Frederick Littler, they had a younger brother Leonard when the family moved from Manchester to Glasgow around 1895.
I can confirm that there were several other births sadly some did not live to adulthood, I have some information from my Gran Isabella Littler (wife of John F Litter) my Dad's parents. if this is of interest please let me know. I'd be delighted to share with you.

Hi Stephen,
I am researching the Littler family from Cheshire and Lancashire. I would seem that they originated in Cheshire and gradually moved to Lancs., during the Industrial Revolution. From what I have gathered they were Blacksmiths or related trades, until reaching M/cr in the early 1830/40s. I myself was born in Manchester. Although I now live in New Zealand. I did find the village of Littler on a Cheshire map and was very suprised and did wonder about it.
Kind Regards Shirley Foster nee Littler

I favour your explanation. I have read that Littler comes from place name Little ora, meaning little shore or river bank. Windsor comes from the same source. And the little ahore is the village you identify in Cheshire. My mothers ancestors were from Tarvin/Ashton, Cheshire. Earliest I have is James Littler, born 1817, Ashton, Cheshire. His offspring were John, Thomas, Ralph,Samuel,Elizabeth, James.
Can you provide any further information on these?
Thanks,
Roger Willoughby

I have read that the Littlers originated in France and/or Littleover, Derby, England. I don't favour either of these, but would welcome receiving firm information to the contary.
Dr. George Ormerod in his "History of Cheshire" published in 1820 and revised in 1882 states the family started at Over, Cheshire in the 1200s, and shows a pedigree going back to that date. This proposition is also supported by the American George Walker Vale. The Littler distribution is mainly in Cheshire, followed closely by Lancashire, with very few Littlers throughout the rest of the UK. this I believe supports the Over starting point. For those interested, Over is a small village near Winsford, and there is a hamlet on the edge of Over called Littler. Anyone wishing to receive a copy of this Littler line please contact me at mlittler01@aol.com

Dear Roger,
I am just acknowledging your email at this stage, as it will take a day or two to sort out my records, [I have not done much during the last 18 months] I know that the Tarvin Littlers are directly connected to the Over line. I spent some time taking photographs of the Littler graves in Tarvin churchyard.
Could I ask you to give me a little more information on your Littler line, obviously it will be through the female side at some stage, and where do you currently live?
I retired some 9 years ago to Hoylake, Wirral

Kind regards

Michael Littler

At the moment I am studying a history degree and have assignments and exams over the next few weeks I will check as soon as time allows and get back to you.
Re: From the village of Littler in Lancashire England
Hi there

Just been very interested to read this message! As you may be able to clear up one of those niggling mysteries for me!

I've discovered that one of my ancesters on my fathers side of the family,( Elizabeth Birtenshaw descended from Hannah Catlow )married Ralph Littler of Tarvin in 1869 in Norbury, St Thomas, Stockport. They had 2 children Edith Littler(1872) and Alfred Littler(1874). Ralph then died in 1878 in Chorlton.

However, i dicovered on the 1881 census that there was another Ralph Littler born around the same time, also from Tarvin, living in Salford (very close by). I wondered if the two Ralphs were related? possibly cousins..

Now here comes the complicated bit - the reason why i'm interested in a possible connection between the two ralphs, is because i think there may be a link through to my mothers line who is a Littler and decended from a littler line only 3 miles away.

I am interested to know more about the littler families in tarvin/ashton if you have any information.

Many thanks
Rosalynn Catlow

I am just beginning my research. I am trying to get more information on Mildred Littler, who I am told, moved to Canada from England. She was in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the early 1900's. Have you found whether Margaret Littler had any sisters or cousins by the name of Mildred? Thanks.

Re: Littler's of Great Budworth,Whitton,Ches.Eng

Hi again,

I have a little info for you from the Great Budworth registers. I have more from Witton cum Twanbrooks Auxiliary Burial Registers but I need to sort out your likely people first from what I have. Would you mind emailing me - just click on my profile for the details? It is a little easier to communicate that way.

I take it you are descended from Thomas & Catherine as you have more info on them. How did you decide that your Thomas was descended from Samuel & Hannah? I can see how you could get a marriage certificate of any of Thomas & Catherine’s children to get the name of the father and used the census to locate their place of birth but I can’t quite understand how you got the next step back - sorry.

I don’t have a record for Thomas & Catherine’s marriage so it would be great if you could share the specifics of where and when they married.

Info from Great Budworth Parish Registers
(Great Budworth Register precaution - much of the pre-1813 registers have been damaged by fire or have difficult to read handwriting so there are most likely more entries for Littler than what I have been able to extract)

•Peter baptised 1811 Aug 23 son of Thomas & Catherine Litler of Barnton
•Levi baptised 1816 Dec 22 son of Thomas & Catherine Litler of Barnton, occ. of father Labourer
•Ellen baptised 1821 May 6 daughter of Thomas & Kitty Litler of Barnton, occ. of father Labourer

I can’t find a reference to a baptism of Thomas in Great Budworth Parish Registers but he could appear in one of the bits that were destroyed. The Bishops Transcripts for that parish that have been extracted to the IGI mention a baptism on 13 Apr 1783 with a father of Thomas. I have not had a chance to order the Bishops Transcripts film yet to check the differences between them and the Parish Registers for my lines but I will do so in the New Year.
A little late to respond but if you are still interested I have some info on this family. I've been trawling through the Great Budworth parish registers and pulling out surnames I am interested in. My Littlers are also in Witton cum Twanbrooks so are probably indirectly related to your Littlers.
