Re: John Locke, born in England abou 1700+/-

hey,
i don't know so much about the lockes of brockdish hall. but i do know that i am descended from samuel lock and his daughter elizabeth through her marriage to john howard. my line goes down to an ariana worthington that married an ijames (innes) man in the late 1700's.

and i have run across the michael lock with 4 wives, etc, as being a possible ancestor of samuel.

the john locke from 1700 would have declared capt. john locke. and he may have been born in england (though i've never been able to find out where as of yet).

but i have seen that he and his father was(capt.) robert locke, born approx. 1679.
and i do know that many of the early locke men were shipping captains usually as mercers or (later) the transportation of people as well as goods.
and i guess that is my main reason for believing that there is a connection between my john from 1700 to samuel locke and his ancestors. because it seems to me that a trade such as mercer (like many other trades of the past few hundred years) would have been passed down from father to son and so on.
that doesn't give me 100% proof of a connection, but it's a thought...i am on my way to work right now and can't say much more, but feel free to message me for further info if you think it'll be of any help.

good luck.
Hi,
I'm drafting a thesis on 'Lock(e)s in, southerly and westerly of Norwich, Norfolk, England during 16th to mid 19th century'.

Like many other researchers using Ancestry.com, I have information about the Lock(e)s living in Brockdish Hall, Norfolk, starting with Michael Lock born c1520 and his wife Jane Wilkinson who moved from London to Brockdish Hall, where one of their sons Samuel Lock was born in 1554. I also have the connection to Elizabeth Lock (Samuel's daughter)and her husband John Howard, who immigrated to the USA.

However, I haven't identified a John Locke born c1700, at least not born in Norfolk, England. Do you know where he was born?

He may have descended from William Locke (of London) born c1480-1490, who was Samuel's grandfather via one of William's first two of four wives. William's first wife Alice Spencer bore him 12 children, including Samuel's father Michael, and his second wife Katherine Cooke bore him 9 children. Between them, they lost about 7 of their 21 children in infancy, born during 1511-1537 (averaging almost 1/year - little wonder the women died fairly young!).

I've only done a little research on a couple of the 7 or so surviving male children, since I've not (yet) found a connection between my direct ancestors and William's descendants.

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Regards,
Ken Lock

John Locke, born in England abou 1700+/-

hey everybody.

i'm descended from a John Locke born in England about 1700 (maybe 1706) and possibly a shipping captain. i have seen that it is a possibility his father's name was Robert Locke (b. about 1679), a shipping captain.

and i am also descended from a Samuel Locke (b. 1554) through his daughter Elizabeth Ann Locke (b. 1580) who married John Howard (b. 1578).

what i am trying to do is find the missing link between these two Locke families.

i know that some of the ancestors of Samuel Locke were Sheriffs of London and merchants, having possession of their own ships, etc. and if John Locke from above was some sort of shipping captain, i am led to believe that the families are in fact connected. i'm just missing the one little nugget of info i need to prove it.

if anyone could help me that would be greatly appreciated. i've been working on this for months (on and off) and am getting close to proving my point, but am needing some help i think.

thanx again to anyone that may be able to help.
(p.s.-i've looked online at the 'book of the lockes', and know that it may be an excellent source of info. just haven't had the funds to try to purchase my own copy as of yet)....
hey. i may have found a little something for you. i was poking around on ancestry trying to kill sometime...i found a Hosea Locke born about 1800 in vermont. and it has his spouse listed as Margaret Dickey Crane.

that's all i have found about him so far. even when i go back and type in the birth year and name for him i haven't been able to come up with a parent's name yet. but i hope at least having the name of Hosea helps you a bit.

good luck.

I just saw a post from 2000 re this man. I have a bit of info re him, mostly from census records. He was born Nov 1859 in New York, moved to San Francisco shortly thereafter with parents, married Frances May Carpenter Tuttle about 1879. Does anyone have their date and place of marriage or his date and place of death and cause of death? Frances remarried a few years later. She was my grandmother's aunt.

Lock(e)s in and westerly of Norwich, Norfolk, England during 16th-19th Century

In the absence of available information about Lock(e) families who lived in or westerly of Norwich, Norfolk during 1500-1800, I've started compiling information. It's mainly based on not always accurate Latter Day Saints BMD records, not just about my direct Lock ancestors but also about other identified Lock(e) families in the area. The use of Lock or Locke seems to vary from, and even within, one generation to another, so it's assumed they're not necessarily distinct families.

I'll subsequently be importing into Ancestry.co.uk an updated Lock family tree Gedcom file, to be exported from my Genes Reunited website. It will contain notes about each person in my tree, including information within those notes about other (non direct ancestor) Lock(e)s born and married about the same time in the area. The aim being to try and identify possible family links. I've started making many assumptions, to be subsequently proved or disproved.

My latest known for certain Norwich area-based Lock(e) direct ancestor was John Lock 1826-1873 who married Elizabeth Prebble c1825, although Elizabeth's ancestry is somewhat questionable. My previous Lock(e) ancestors are currently assumed to be, but becoming less and less certain as we go back in time:

- John Lock b1779 and Lucy Taylor b1801
- John Lock c1750 and Elizabeth Cook c1750
- Isaac Lock c1712 and Mary c1716 (questionable)
- John Lock b1671 and Jane Cole b1679
- John Lock b1639 and Tasmine Norice b1637
- Peter Lock c1615 and Sarah c1615

If you're interested in this thread, I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Ken Lock

William Locke and Margaret McCoy did have a daughter named Mary (went by Polly) born about 1784 and died between 1817-1819. She married Alexander Rodgers/Rogers. They had three children that I know of (information is not proven): Elizabeth, who married Elijah Johnston/Johnson; George, who married Susannah Drake; and Margaret, who married a Bradley.

Then Alexander married Mary Dean. The information I have seen posted stated that they had six children.

William Locke and Margaret McCoy had 8 living children that I know of.

Hope this helps you.

If you want to contact me, jneyrgenealogy@bresnan.net.

Hello,
I have no connection to your family, but I have had great luck by obtaining the death certificates of people...it usually lists father's and mother's maiden name. If you know anything about your relative, this is the way to go.

Did your relative come to America, or stay in in England?

American records seem much easier to obtain...

Good Luck

I am directly related to Margaret Dickey Crane, born 1802 in Bradford, Orange, Vermont, sixth child of Daniel Owen Crane and Sarah Reed. Margaret married a Locke, who may have the first name of Hosea, although I have never been able to document this.
She and her children left Vermont for Leyden, Cook, Illinois and were there for the 1850 census, living next to another Locke woman and her children. Both women appear to be farmers. Their children bear the same names: William, Asa, etc.
Margaret and Mystery Man (Hosea?) Locke had these children, all born in Vermont:
Asa William 1830-1900
William H., 1831-
Osmond C. 1833-1864
Ithiel B. 1838-1901
Frederick M. 1841-1920

I am very interested to find out the exact name of Margaret Dickey Crane's husband. I believe he probably died in Vermont and that is why Margaret went to Illinois to live next to the other Locke woman.
Margaret and her family are in Claremont, Dodge, Minnesota by 1875, where she dies in 1885.
I have more information to share.
Any chance you know anything about Margaret's husband?
Thank you.
Alice V.
Found: Cora "Locke" Lyons & Hattie "Locke" Cartwright photos among other relations!!!

Yesterday I travelled to a great antique shop in Duncan, Oklahoma to look for old photos...my newest hobby. I always try to find ones with writing on the back to help me identify the persons in it and the family it belongs to. Then I spend the day searching the heck out of the internet and ancestry.com trying to find the right family to return the photos to.

Well, yesterday I hit a little jackpot of sorts. 10 photos that all have the same handwriting on the back in the same blue ink. Here's a little about each:

1. Mother & Young Toddler
Photographer: Bacon 254 East Main St Rochester, N.Y.
On Back: "Delia Eldridge and son Roy 1892"
I believe this to be Della D. ? born 1868 NY and her son Roy Clark Eldridge.
She married Eugene Eldridge b. 1859 NY.
Children: Roswell M b. 1886, Paul R. b. 1887, Roy Clark b. 1892, and Madeline b. 1899.

2. Husband seated & holding bible, Wife standing
Photographer: Morrison, Artist, Fillmore. (this is in NY)
On Back: "Clark Josiah Tanner Crandall Eldridge and Eliza Eldridge about 1895"
I believe this to be Clark (all those middle names) Eldridge born Aug 1848 died Apr 1915 and his 2nd wife Eliza Vickery born 1860 died 1950.
Children: Everett Eugene Eldridge b. 1884 d. 1973 (m. Edna Merritt, children: Lois Fiegl, Elsie Jean Perry, & Margaret Fishic), and Myrtie Frances Eldridge b. 1900 (m. Russell Ostrum).

3. Baby in Christening Gown
Photographer: Bacon 254 East Main St Rochester, N.Y.
At Bottom of Front: "Bessie Eldridge 1893"
I don't have any clue to her relation.

4. Lady with interesting necklace
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "Cora Locke Lyons"
I believe this to be Cora Locke born 1872 NY.
She's the daughter of William Locke & Sarah ?.
Siblings: Fred b. 1874, Hattie b. 1875 (m. Miles R. Cartwright, children: Wilbur E. b. 1905, Everett M. b. 1907)
She married James Lyons b. 1869 NY.
Children: Juanita Lyons b. 1900.

5. Lady with pearl chocker and earrings
Photographer: Brewer's Art Studios, Belfast, Fillmore, and Rusford, N.Y.
On Back: "Hattie Locke-Cartwright"
I believe this to be Hattie Locke sister to Cora listed above.

6. Young Man with top button buttoned
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "George McEwan"
I don't have any clue to his relation.

7. Young Man with pin on lapel
Photographer: Hewitt Union Block, Nunda, N.Y.
On Back: "Herbert Lee about 17yrs old about 1893"
I believe this to be Herbert Lee son of Benjamin Lee & Mary E. ?. He was born 1876 NY but is shown in Salisaw, Oklahoma in 1880 on census.
Siblings: James Lee (father of Clifford Lee b. 1898).

8. Toddler in gown sitting on fancy seat
Photographer: C.C. Hewitt, Mt. Morris, N.Y.
On Back: "Clifford Lee about 1899"
I believe this to be Clifford Lee son of James Lee and nephew of Herbert Lee as listed above.

9. Older Lady
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "Lizzie Lee Schutt"
I don't have any clue to her relation.

10. Lady with ornate gown
Photographer: From WM. Mables, Art Gallery, Canaseraga, N.Y.
On Back: "Lizzie Lee Schutt 1890"
I don't have any clue to her relation except that she is the same as photo 9.

Although I couldn't make connections between the different surnames I still think they are connected in some way since the same person wrote on all of them. I couldn't trace any good leds to live descendants nor could I find an active member on ancestry.com through the family trees. Hopefully someone will read this and genuinely be connected to at least a few of these photos. I'd love to find the family that has connections to them all....the lady who lost them to begin with would be great. But I know that isn't likely.

If you think you are related, please reply here or shoot me an email at avigailsmommy@yahoo.com
I can email copies if requested.

~Amber Harkins

Found some Locke family photos

My husband's Great Great Great Grandmother is Mary Ann Locke, born around 1821 in New Hampshire, I believe. She was married to William H. Rixford. Her daughter is Edna Rixford.

We have inherited her daughter's photo album. In it are pictures labeled 'John Locke', 'Sarah Locke', and 'Pamila Locke'. No dates or other information. I am trying to find out who Mary's parents were, and who these other Locke's could be. Anyone help me out?
