We have obtained a photograph of Colonel Lockett's simple gravestone. It contains a misspelling ("bord" instead of "born"), which strongly suggests that it was carved by a non-English-speaking person in Colombia, where Colonel Lockett died. I was also provided with a letter from December 1891, in which an undertaker in Colombia was prevailing upon the US Minister to help him get his bill paid for his work with regard to Lockett. So it seems highly likely that Lockett is buried in Bogota, Colombia, perhaps at the "English Cemetery," where many protestants were buried.

Hi Gene. You're right--too long. I may have some info that you would like to have if it's new to you. My daughter has done a lot of Lockett research and passed on documents to me--wills etc. Some info that she thought was Cullen Rogers turned out to be the other Cullen Rogers. I saw your 2003 posting when a new posting popped up today. The wife of Thomas Hinton was Senia Lockett, daughter of Cullen Lockett, as you have. In addition to the three children you mentioned (see Warren Co. GA 1860 and 1870) there was a 4th child Martha J. Hinton, b. 1867, and who was shown living with her aunt in Glascock Ga in 1870. It appears that Thomas and Senia had both died.

Beauty Lee Gordon, 87, of 510 N. Mulberry St. Mansfield, Ohio; died Monday morning, June 22, 2009 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Gordon was born September 11, 1921 in Hillsboro, Georgia and had lived in Mansfield, Richland county, Ohio the past 68 years.
She was a member of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, and retired from MedCentral Mansfield Hospital formerly Mansfield General Hospital after 13 years of service. Beauty was a homemaker in every since of the word opening her home to anyone in need, cooking for ministers, and loving and enjoying her grandchildren all with her infectious smile .

Beauty is survived by three daughters, Viola (Larry) Marsh, Virginia "Ginny" (Samuel) Horn, and Loretta "Ratta" (Dannie) Cameron; one son, James "Buggy" H. Gordon, Jr. all of Mansfield; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Effile Cargile and Lessie Clemons Lockett; her husband, James H. Gordon, Sr.; two daughters, Leola Stricklin, and Iona Hightower; and an adopted daughter, Willa Ruth Sanders.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 12:00 Noon in the Oasis of Love Church Of God In Christ with Rev. Quentin L. Respress presiding and Rev. Fred Gilbert delivering the eulogy.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
Interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
The family will also receive friends at the home beginning today (Tuesday) till the day of services, from 3-8 p.m. daily.

Does anyone have William Henry Lockett (b 1865) in Longton, Staffordshire, England in their family?

William emigrated to New Jersey, arriving 28th January 1893 leaving his family back in the UK. His wife, Martha Ann Lockett joined him in 1920.

William is my Great-Uncle - his brother Benjamin is my Great-Grandfather.

Any information on William or Martha appreciated. I have research on the English side and am willing to share.

I have been researching Samuel Henry Lockett and his family. Although we have found much bio information about them, we have not found his grave. Have you located it since your last post? His wife, Cornelia Clark Lockett, died on July 6, 1912, and is buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Orange, NJ. Her tombstone mentions her being the wife of Samuel Henry Lockett, but he is not buried there. I am compiling a history of all Civil War veterans who ever lived in Cranford, NJ. Col. Lockett, CSA Engineers, lived there with his family in the 1880's.

Hi, just seen your post about William and Martha - I have them in my tree - William is my Great-Uncle. He emigrated from England in January 1893 leaving his brother Benjamin (my Great-Grandfather) behind. Their mother, Hannah(nee Adams) joined him in 1916 when she was 73.

Would you like to swop some information? I'm happy to provide the English side of the family and I'd love to know more about William and Martha.

I am descended from Cullen Rogers Lockett through his son Solomon. I have a picture and some colorful stories about Cullen Rogers if you are interested. Solomon died during the Civil War and his wife and baby daughter, Susan, lived with Cullen and Harriett. That Susan Lockett Jones was my great grandmother who lived to be 103 when I was an adult, so I can relate stories told directly to me by she and my grandfather.

"sic" is Latin for "thus"

Researchers use that term to indicate that they personally did not misspell a word and that it appeared thus in the document that they are quoting.

In this case, it is a misspelling of the name Halcoat.

Woodley Lockett was my Great Grand Father. I am the Grandson of his daughter Marcoleta Lockett Adams. Marcoleta married Tom Adams of Shreveport and they moved to Fresno, Ca in the 1940's. marcoleta died in 1971 at the age of 71.

Their daughter Susannah Lockett m--Joseph Ashbrook bet. 1755-1760 in Chesterfield Co., Va. Their son James Ashbrook b-1770 d-1831 Milburn, Ballard Co., Ky. m- Nancy Sims It goes from to their son Daniel Ashbrook b-1813 d-21 Nov 1869 His son James Robert Ashbrook b-22-Nov-1856 d-12 April 1936 to his son Frank Vernon Ashbrook b-20 Aug 1886 d-3 May-1958 His son George Robert Ashbrook b-6-Dec 1916 d-30 April 1995 Thus down to my husband Robert Ashbrook. Does this sound right to you for the Lockett family? I think there was no more contact after the Ashbrook family moved to Ky.

Hello - I don't know how I missed your postings eight years ago (!) but I appreciate the information you posted re: your Lockett line and Pocahontas' descendants. Very neat, indeed!

I am aware of the Thomas I-II-III line of Locketts from Virginia and am glad to know that you are related to that family. I suspect that somehow my Benjamin Lockett (b. abt. 1780) is tied to that family line, but if he indeed was descended from native americans, his parentage or his parents' marriage may not have been recognized by the state or the family, which may explain why I can't make the link.

I will email you at the address you provided to see if we can reconnect and hope that I can find that missing link to learn my Benjamin Lockett's parentage -- especially if he is related to Chief Powhatan and Pocahontas! Do you know if Margaret Lockett (whom you mention is cited in "Southern Kith and Kin") is related to the Thomas I-II-III Locketts?

I don't know why I didn't see your reply -- eight years ago! -- and I'm not at my home computer to look up my genealogy info, but I recall that the Benjamin Lockett who is married to Winnifred Pride is part of a large Lockett family in Virginia known for their ancestors Thomas I, Thomas II, and Thomas III (original Thomas and his son and grandson). It is this line that I suspect my Benjamin is linked to, but he is not the same Benjamin who married Winnifred Pride. I am trying to find if there is a link between my Benjamin and Thomas I - II - III. If you are not familiar with the Thomas I/II/III Locketts, perhaps that is a lead for you to investigate regarding your Benjamin who married Winnifred Pride. -- Graham

Carole, thank you for the information. I'll have to sort through my Lockett info further because I only recognize the first four names that you mention (Thomas, Margaret, Benjamin and Winifred). My line of Locketts, if they are related to your ancestors, would not tie into the Ashbrook line but descend from Thomas and/or Benjamin Lockett. The trouble I have is that I can't find a link from my great-grandfather Benjamin Lockett (found in Hot Springs, ARK in 1850 and reportedly born in Rockingham County, VA abt 1780) with anyone in the Thomas Lockett family. I'll look back into that family to see if new leads have been discovered. Thanks again - Graham

His father was reportedly also named Benjamin and he could have been born anywhere about from 1740 to 1760, yes? I am the son of Samuel Leander Lockett (b.1904) who was the son of John Douglas Lockett (b.1860) and Mary Elizabeth Cochran (b.1868) .....and John Douglas Lockett was the son of John Thomas Lockett (b.1829). I have more, such as children and dates and other lines but am also missing a bunch! Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio I have so far identified as birth places and I am from California and retired to Washington. Any help I may provide I would be happy and also any info you may have on my lines I would appreciate.

Francis was also known as Leonard, his parents were Francis Leonard Lockett & Mary Elizabeth Lockett

I am not good with my georgraphy but these people lived around Mount Royal Montreal.

The son George served in ww2 and was stationed in England where he met his future wife they marry during ww2 and have a daughter then move back to Canada for 12 years then moved to England for good
in Canada they lived at Avenue Champagnuer Montreal

What I have is my fr-grandfather was Davy Lockett b. appox. 1834 in Georgia his wife was Sally Winfrey Lockett Thomasthey later migrated to Louisanna where her died she remarried into the Thomas family.Davy's father was Tom/Thomas Lockett. There is a Gental Lockett, Cheese Lockett,Brown Lockett also in my line these are just a few of the older heads.
Davy is first found in the 1870 census in La. no idea how he arrived in La. may have arrived as a slave.I have a family that moved to Chicago in the 1930's (female ) and had several children no idea what ever happened to her my mother was there during that time also but evenually move to TX.,after her parents left La/Ark area.

I am the grandaughter of William/Will G.Lockett born in Louisanna he married in to the Waller family.His father was Davy Lockett born in Georgia . Davy's father was Tom/Thomas Lockett I think Tom's wife was named Mary also born in Georgia according to census records but died in Louisanna.
He had several brothers and sister but no married names for his sis. except one she was Ellen Lockett Taylor.

How far have you been able to trace your Lockett family back? We have records that trace our family back to a Jacob and Matilda who were slaves in 1860 and had at least five children. One of my family members have the names and I would like to compare to yours. We have traced our family back four generations from my grandfather.

Benjamin III (son of Benjamin Jr.) received land in Kentucky for his military service in the Revolution. ( Military Certificates, Vol. 2, p 40, No. 3390.) He was probably born about 1740. I have absolutely no idea what happened to him after he left Virginia.

Another Benjamin was the son of Gideon Lockett, grandson of Thomas Jr. (by his second wife, Elizabeth) and great-g’son of Thomas and Margaret. Katherine Dixon Carter Blankenship, Thomas Lockett, a Genealogical Memoir (Arts and Crafts Press, San Diego, CA, 1940.) went into great detail on this line but I have not really studied it much.

A third Benjamin in your age group was the son of Joel Lockett and Mary Royall. Joel was the son of Thomas Jr. by the first wife, Martha Osborne.

First and principally I resign my soul to God that gave it to me in hope os his acceptance through the merits and mediation of his son my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the earth from which it was formed to be entered in such manner as my hereafter executors shall think fit and as for such worldly goods where with all it has pleased God to bless me with in this life - I give demis and dispose of in the following manner -
Item - I lend my well beloved wife, Mary LOCKETT, the use of my negro girl Sal during her widowhood, then said Sal and increase to be equally divided amongst my four sons, Royal, Pleasant, Daniel and Benjamin LOCKETT. If my youngest son shall then be 20 years of age, if not she, Sal, shall be kept with the rest of my negroes, hereafter mentioned, to the said 4 boys - as also I give my wife 40 schillings a year to be paid by my executors out of the money that is raised by the crops for her own use during her widowhood.
Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter, Fannie HANKLEY, one feather bed.
Item - I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin LOCKETT the land and plantation I live on when he shall arrive at the age of 20 years, to him and his heirs forever.
Item - My will and desire is that my wife and children may live together on my plantation till my youngest son is the age of 20 years and that my whole estate both real and personal should be continuted on the said plantation. To raise my children and my will and desire is that my executors lend out all the money they can or shall be raised by the crops made on the plantation at interest, excepting the forty schillings a year to my wife till my youngest son Benjamin shall arrive at the age of 20 years. then the said money to be divided between my two youngest daughters Mary LOCKETT and Elizabeth LOCKETT, if they are then living, if not both living my desire is that the surviving one have the whole money - and as for the rest of my estate both real and personal that is not yet given away I desire it may be equally divided by any three men that they shall choose as also my will and desire is that my sons Royal, Pleasant, Daniel and Benjamin, or such of tehm as shall be then living to be divided by any three men that they shall choose, as also my will and desire is that my sons Royal, Pleasant, Daniel and Benjamin shall and may be free their own men at the age of 20 years. I also desire that my estate not be appraised, lastly I institute and appoint Thomas MOSELY, James HANKLEY and my son Royal LOCKETT my executors of this my last will and testament. In witness thereof I have set my hand and fixed my seal this 21st day of Sept. 1768.

At least some of Joel’s children went to Tennessee very early on.

Actually, there was a fourth one but I am pretty sure he died childless and single so let’s not confuse the issue with him!

William Lockett's will was dated 5 Dec 1756. Named sons William, Benjamin, John, Thomas, James, Hallcott and Abraham. Daughters Susanna ASHBROOK, Jane, Margaret, Winifred and wife Jane. "Of Dale Parish". Probated 2 Sep 1757, proven by witnesses John FARMER, Richard LOCKETT, John PRIDE.
Descendants say that William m. Jane Price, daughter of John, and almost certainly a cousin.
William was most certainly a son of Benjamin Lockett and Winnifred Pride. I can't prove that but Thomas Jr.'s line is pretty well accounted for and there really was nobody else he could have belonged to.
In Henrico Records 1725-37, pages 269, 170 and 290 are deeds of gift from Benjamin Lockett to his children, Benjamin Lockett, Jr., Deborah Lockett, Martha Walthall and Jane Haskins. I didn't find a deed to William.

John B. LOCKETT (LOCKET) was born about 1837 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He served in the Civil War as a Confederate for North Carolina. He married Catherine Lefler or Leffer. After the was he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he died in 1911.

I have not been able to find anything on his parents, possible siblings, etc.

Any informatin would be greatly appreciated.
