Wow thank you very much. We are truly related. My name is Brian Loften, I'm 40 and live in Kailua Kona, HI. I don't have any info on Axel's father, my grandpa Lyle passed a few years ago and his wife Mary passed shortly thereafter. Lyle did tell some stories about his horse(s), but not much info on the past. Apparently, from what Lyle told me, the brothers Axel & Pete were to leave together for America and Pete didn't show for the boat and stayed with his girl. He must have come later. What is your name? You can email me at: hapuna77@hawaii.rr.com
My father and brother & I just returned from a trip to Alaska, if you want to see the pics goto: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hapuna77/

Would love to hear more from you,

Brian

Stevens County Museum and Historical Society, Morris, MN has a photo of Pete and Axel's Blacksmith Shop. You can find it on google. I'm still curious about extended family from Jonas Olofsson, Axel's father.

John Axel Loften came over as John Axle Olsson, born in Östraby sweden. He was joined by his brother, Peter Algot in Stevens County Minnesota and he later moved to South Dakota, your great grandfather, to North Dakota. Peter Loften is my great grandfather. Ask about the horse, name change and Australia, I could never figure out that story. It probably had something to do with Gust coming into Oregon in 1918, not sure.

My family moved west from wisconsin in the late 1800's. My grandfather was Curtis Elmer Loften. He was born approximately 1885. We grew up thinking that we were of Norwegian ancestry and lately had thought Pennsylvania Dutch. I know of only one relative outside of my own local family, and she was in Wisconsin. Her name was Estelle (or possibly Esther) Loften and I think she may have been from Milwaukee. She has probably passed on now as I recall my mother corresponding with her in the sixties and seventies and that petered out. I am desparate to know some family history. We did have a very old photograph cut from a newspaper in 1888 showing my grandads' School photo. It always fascinated me. It was his graduation from the sixth grade. He was a big fellow. Got to be 6'4" and not heavy, sandy hair. He, apparently, never returned to school. It wasn't long after that that he (alone?) travelled northwest. He landed in Saskatchewan in a tiny town called Spy Hill. Just over the border from the states. He then moved on to Vancouver where he met and married Olive Margeret Deighton. They had 5 living and one still born children, Frank , George, Shirley, Marie, Donald Eugene (my dad). He lived to a ripe old 90ish and passed away in 1965 when I was three. Many people my age (42) who were born and raised in British Columbia know little of their family histories. We seem to be descended from an entire generation of vagabonds. I hope this helps and that you can reply to me kaloften@telus.net, re the loftens, when you get a chance.

Loften Surname Project

Anyone interested please let me know As Soon As Possible.

Update on the FamilyTreeDNA surname project.

We have several people who have offered to assist in paying for tests of others with the aforementioned surname variations. This in conjunction with the limited time offer gift certificates donated by the company as described below, which will drastically reduce the cost of taking the tests.

The gift certificates are not good for the 12 marker test, but are for the 25 and 37. I think the 25 is the best one to get initially anyway.

Anyone interested please contact me. We could probably get a 12 marker test done for about 1/2 the listed price or the 25 marker test done for just under $100.00.

There are only two gift certificates available for the Male Y-DNA test and they gave us 1 for a mtDNA test.
-------------------------------------
Now is definetely the time to join the project. FamilyTreeDNA has put a $75 gift certificate in the form of 3 Gift Certificates - 2 for Y-DNA and 1 for
mtDNA - that will be valid according to the following terms:

a) Not valid in conjunction with any other promotion or offer
b) Each $30 gift certificate is to be used with one test kit - either a
Y-DNA25 or a Y-DNA37
c) Each $15 gift certificate is to be used with one mtDNA test kit.
d) Kits must be ordered and paid for by December 31st, 2005
e) Not valid for test upgrades, add-ons or Y-DNA12.
------------------------------------------

Below is an example of two of the tests received for the Surname project. 12 marker tests listed.

12 Markers listed:
Loftis R1b 13-23-14-11-11-14-12-09-12-13-13-29
Loftin R1b 13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-12-13-13-30

Re: josephine loften kimzey

Mitzi,
I have been reading the queries on both the Kimzey and Lofton boards and I believe I have Josephine Lofton's maternal line.

Josephine was the daughter of Samuel L. Lofton b Nov 1844 Ark and married I believe Mary C. McGhee b Apr 1845 Cherokee Co Ala.

She was the daughter of Nicholas McGhee and Mary "Polly" Click who were from Washington and Greene Counties, Tennessee. Nicholas and Mary went down through Cherokee Co Alabama where they lived a few years, then went up through Georgia someplace, before settling in Casa, Perry Co. Arkansas where they both died.

Samuel Lofton was residing in Nicholas and Mary's household in the 1860 census. Then in 1870 Samuel and Mary C are living next door to Nicholas and Mary McGhee in Perry Co. Ark.

As I have researched the Lofton's are always living around the McGhee's until Samuel and Mary moved over into Hot Spring County sometime last 1890's it appears.

By 1900 they are on the census in Hot Spring.

I sure hope you get this since it's been so long since anything has been posted here.

I have a lot more information to share with you.

Carolyn Whitaker
atsissie@aol.com

It is written as Emmer)
She was born October 18, 1886 in Texas. She has many brothers and sisters. Her parents are:
Eziekiel Asa Loftin b. March 12, 1841 in Lawrence, Mississippi. D.October 20, 1916
married to Cynthia Rachel Welch, b.October 15, 1846, & D.January 20, 1916
Cynthia was born in Joyoel, Mississippi.

Emmer had 8 brothers & Sisters, but on the birth certificate, which I will try to find, it says that Emmer was the 10th child to be born to this couple. Maybe some died.

If this information matches what you have, pleaase email me. I am not directly related to Emmer. She was my grandfather's first wife. From what I'm told Axel had a brother (not sure of name) but I beleive Axel was the one who came over to the states from Sweden, and took his mother's maiden name of Loften or Lofoten (from the Norwegian Islands I guess). I will try to get more info from my Grandpa Lyle. A few things sound similar, so it might be fun to swap info...

Brian

My grandfather was Berent (sp?) Loften. He married Agnes McCarthy in Milwaukee Wisconsin and they lived there their entire lives. Wondering if there's a relation that you know of. My uncle has traced this line of ancestry back to Norway but I haven't been much interested until recently. He's been to Norway visiting relatives there twice and corresponds with them regularly.

Thanks

Well, I'm starting that family tree interest thing again and am wondering what information might be out there on my father's side of the family. My father was Daniel Lee Loften, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 30, 1931 and Died June 1989. I don't know much about his father other than he was a first generation Norwegian Imigrant and his wife, Agnes McCarthy was raised in an orphanage in Chicago.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Rikki

The name Asa Loftin keeps popping up and I have an Asa Loftin in MS. In the 1850, Neshoba Co MS he appears with children young enough to be his grandchildren. I was hoping that Arveline Loftin's (my GG GM) daughter, Emma Joseyline might have been named after your Emmer. I am trying to locate Arveline's parents. She was born in 1837. Do you have anything in your records?
Help!!!
