Hi Russell,

I just started researching the Loftin family as I am trying to join DAR. I too am confused about the Lewis, John, and Cornelius lineage. Were you able to clear it up? I have a terrible photocopy of the estate papers. Are the ones on microfilm any better? If so, I may go down to NC this summer. I would love to dicuss the Loftins with you.

The only way I can think toget a dopy would be to go to the local libraries/bookstores of North Carolina. I found an interesting book about my dad's home county, Covington, in a Hattiesburg, MS bookstore when I went for a visit. How about E-BAY? I've seen books on there too. You'd be surprised on what you find on E-BAY. Good Luck. Nancy B

Re: re: Leonard Loftin (b. 1654) Ship West

I don't know if you are still active on this site, but I have just seen your message. Personally, I doubt that there was a ship West. The source for this information seems to be the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (Vol. 5, No. 3, pg 343, yet does not mention a ship. There is a notation "By West, July 12, 1636." After a rather thorough search of websites dealing with immigrant ships and passenger lists, and a Google search, I could find no ship named West. Going to the VMHB article and searching through all the land abstracts listed in that volume, I noted that of the 39 patents included, 37 of them said "By West" followed by a date. The dates were chronological (for the most part), and ranged from June 4 to August 12 of 1636. Clearly this could not be a ship leaving port every few days from its last departure.

The explanation came from examination of the original patent from which the VMHB abstract was taken (available at the Library of Virginia website, digital document collection). In the first sentence, and repeated again later, is the statement "...I, Capt. John West, Esq. Governor..." Further research into Virginia history showed that John West was the governor of Virginia in 1636. It is apparent to me that "By West" refers not to a ship, but to Governor West who granted the patent to Elizabeth Parker on July 12, 1636.

John West had two brothers who were also governors, Francis and Thomas. Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr (1577-1618).

I don't know if this will help and it may cause confusion but my tree shows Elkanah Loftin ( 1726 - 1792)as the son of Benoni Loftin (16 Jan 1705 - 6 Jan 1756) and Ann Lovick (1710 - 1727). My records show Elkanah died in Dobbs, Georgia.

My tree stems onward from Benoni Loftin to another son, Thomas, and I have not,as yet, done any research on Thomas' siblings. She married my ggggrandfather Moses Lambeth, (b. 1754-d. 1843), both born in Craven Co. NC. My gggrandfather was Samuel L. (b.1783-d.1873) who married Mary 'Polly' Merrill. My ggrandmother was Louisa, (b.1831-1858).She married Henry Cox in Osage Co. MO.in 1851. My grandmother was Tabitha Cox (b.1855-d.1941).
Please drop me a note.
Liz, I am very interested to see what you have concerning Leonard Loftin and his decendants.
I have been researching my GGG Grandmother, Tabitha Loftin, b.1757 New Bern, Craven Co. NC. I believe she was the daughter of Thomas Loftin, b.1724 in Craven Co. NC. and Francis Elizabeth Cox. Thomas is supposed to be the son of Benoni Loftin and his first wife, Ann Lovick. Tabitha married Moses Lambeth in 1780, who was also from Craven Co. NC. She died in 1836 and is buried in Thomasville, NC.
If you can share your information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Ginger Henderson
chenderson43@tampabay.rr.com

I have some suspicion that John Loftin 1799-1844 is the grandson of Benoni Loftin 1704. His father may be Francis Loftin 1736 married to Louissa, but it seems quite possible that it he is Benoni's grandson.

NC to GA and Alabama match up.
John Loftin (1766) and Sarah Giles (m: abt 1791) had a daughter, Louisa
Ezekial Loftin 1750 (son of Benoni) had a son Giles Thomas Loftin b:1799

Not alot to go on....

Any thoughts out there on this?

Hi Nancy,

Your Nancy sounds like it may be the Nancy Morris that I am looking for. The Nancy that I am looking was born 1794 had a son Lovick and lived in Floyd and Polk counties in Georgia. I can not find information on her husband. Since the first son was given the mother's maiden name at that time, could this be the same person? Lovick married Sarah Doeg and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters. Their son Andrew J Morris was my Great-Grandfather. He moved to Etowah County Alabama. Later Lovick and Sarah also moved to Etowah County also.

If you think this is the same Nancy please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Betty Bennett Marion

Hello, I am looking for the parents of Askew Loftin, born abt 1832 in NC, married to Mary McBroom in Alabama, lived in Cherokee Co., AL, fought and died in the Civil War. I have a strong suspicion that he is a son of Henderson and Catherine Edwards Loftin, but have no solid proof. One of Askew and Mary's sons is named Thadeus Henderson, and their first daughter is named Sarah Catherine. There is a "Squire" Loftin, age 19, NC, living with JW and Ann Edwards in Cherokee Co., AL in 1950. Squire might be a nickname for Askew, and the Edwards might be his grandparents if Catherine Edwards Loftin is indeed his mother. Other researchers have placed Catherine as a daughter of James W. and Ann Reynolds Edwards. Do you have any records that show either Askew or "Squire" as belonging to one of the NC Loftin families?

Hi Kelley, Askew's Civil War Service Record has this as his date and place of death. Go to the Alabama Department of Archives and Research Web site, http://archives.state.al.us/ge.html, and go to the miliary records. Put in Askew Loftin's name and the info will come up. There is also a new site. www.footnote.com, in conjunction with the National Archives that has Mary's request for Askew's Civil War Pension. You need a membership to view and download the pension papers and letters. Could we correspond by e-mail? I would be glad to send you the documentation that I have accumulated regarding the family and find out whatever information you have about the family. I am really excited to correspond with a member of the Askew's family. Hopefully we can help each other.

Re: Lewis Loftin of Davidson County, NC

I spent a couple of hours at the Public Library in Lexington, NC yesterday looking for information on the Loftin families that lived in Rowan/Davidson County, NC. Davidson County was carved from Rowan in December 1822.

Within the "loose estate papers" they have on microfilm I found papers relating to Lewis Loftin. He died in 1810 just as my 3rd great grandfather Jones K. Wood stated in the papers he left us. It was not until 1813 that Lewis Loftin's estate was finally settled. The persons named who received proceeds from the estate were: Mary Loftin (widow of Lewis), Thomas Jones (husband of daughter Lavina Loftin), William Loftin (son of Lewis), John Loftin (son of Lewis), William Adderton (guardian of one of the minor daughters), Jones Wood (husband of daughter Ruth Loftin), Elizabeth Loftin (daughter), William Cox (husband of daughter Mary Loftin), Sarah Loftin (daughter), and Arthur Newsom (husband of daughter Keraney Loftin). There was no mention of son Cornelius, perhaps he had already received his share during his father's lifetime.

I also checked over the Rowan County, NC Tax Lists from 1753 (the year Rowan County was created) to 1800. I found Lewis Loftin on: (1)The 1778 Rowan County Tax List where he was shown with property valued at 2,782 pounds (more than almost all of his neighbors), (2) 1784 Taxable Return of Cap. Runnions Company. A List of the Taxable Property of the Inhabitants of Capt. Runyons District, Rowan County, North Carolina Taken by William Cole for the year 1784 (150 acres of land and 5 slaves), (3) 1794 Rowan County Tax List of Capt. Davis of Bald Mountain District (763 acres of land and 5 slaves, and (4) 1796 Rowan County Tax List, Unknown Company (Bald Mountain [Davidson County] area of Rowan) (823 acres of land and 8 slaves).

This shows us that Lewis Loftin came to Rowan County (present day Davidson County), NC by 1778, and proceeded to grow his wealth as the years passed. There were no other Loftin's listed on these tax lists other than in the 1796 Rowan Tax List where a Moses Loftin is shown with 300 acres of land and 6 slaves. Moses did not live close to Lewis however, he probably lived west of the Yadkin River (Lewis lived east of the river) in what is today Rowan County.

Some researchers have stated that Cornelius Loftin was the father of Ruth Dunn Loftin and that he married Patsy Wood. I believe Cornelius was Ruth's older brother and that might explain why he does not show up on the above listed Tax Lists of Rowan County (he had not setup his own household and was not 21 years of age). I also believe researchers are confusing Cornelius Loftin with Cornelius Loflin who lived nearby. I found the will of Cornelius Loflin in the Davidson County library and he died in Oct/Nov 1838. He lists heirs as wife Martha (I believe this is Martha "Patsy" Wood, daughter of Penuel Wood and Sarah Kimball), son Kindred, son Eleazer, daughter Sarah, daughter Miriam, son Burrell, daughter Celia Ann, son William Milton, and son Harris.

I also found a court order dated November 1849 which orders John Loftin (Administrator) of Cornelius Loftin Sr.'s estate, to sell two slaves named Susan and Mary and to place the proceeds into the settlement of Cornelius Loftin Sr's intestate estate. Is this John Loftin a son of Cornelius, and is this Cornelius the son of Lewis? The dates seem correct to me, some researchers state that Cornelius was born about 1781 and died 1849.

I'm hoping some of the Loftin researchers can add to our knowledge of Lewis Loftin and his family.

Russell Wood
Lewis Loftin of Davidson County, NC

My 4th great grandfather was Lewis Loftin (b. Abt 1747 - d. 17 April 1810). Lewis and his wife Mary (b. Abt 1752 - d. 10 November 1842) lived in Rowan County, NC (became present day Davidson County in 1822). I descend from their daughter Ruth Dunn Loftin (b. 28 April 1793 - d. 28 March 1869) who married Jones Kendrick Wood in 1812, and lived in Randolph County, NC near her mother and siblings.

Jones K. Wood left us with some papers that he wrote in the mid 1850's and gives us the names of his wife's parents, the dates of their deaths, and even the name of the man who preached Lewis Loftin's funeral and the Bible verses used. I realize that this information is in conflict with what some researchers are reporting. Some people are reporting that Ruth's father was Cornelius Loftin. I have visited the library in Lexington, NC (the county seat of Davidson County) and have seen the will extracts of Mary Loftin (wife of Lewis, probated in 1842) and Sarah Loftin (unmarried daughter of Lewis and Mary, probated in 1835). From these wills we know some of the children's names born to this couple: son Cornelius, son John, daughter Vina Jones, daughter Kerany Newsom, daughter Ruth Wood. There were other daughters who had apparently died before Sarah's will was written on 7 July 1834: a Cox, a Cranford, and a Burkhead.

I would really like to find out the names of Lewis Loftin's parents and would like to tie this family back to the earlier Loftin generations who lived in eastern North Carolina. I am willing to share any and all information that I have.

I can be reached at woodr@triad.rr.com.

Russell Wood

Re: Nancy Loftin help!

I am replying without my LOFTIN notes in front of me. I'm researching Morrises in Laurens Co. If I remember correctly (and I will check my notes later), Elkanah's estate was settled in the 1820s and it mentions a Nancy Morris as an heir.

I have these notes im my MORRIS notes:

[from Laurens Co. Legal Records by Allen Thomas]

2-23-1817--Jonathan MORRIS m. Nancy LOFTIN; Amos LOVE, clerk; Neill MUNROE, JP. (in Laurens Co. Ga.)

3-8-1819--Jonathan MORRIS named eligible from Capt. Sion SMITH district. (Laurens Co., Ga.) [What does that mean?]

12-27-1826--Jonathan MORRIS of Alabama had moved out of Georgia and appointed Jonas GRIFFIN of Wilkinson Co. as his lawful attorney to collect from Dread THOMAS, adm. of the estate of Canor (Elkanah?) LOFTIN estate of Laurens Co. Witnesses: John WILLIAMS and Robert ROZAR, JP
~~~
You can find at least an abstract of Elkanah Loftin's estate in the Thomas book, if I remember correctly. I'm sure there was more than one Elkanah Loftin. I cannot say for sure if this is the one that married a Lovick, but I will see what I can find when I can get to my LOFTIN notes.
Write me at
Irishsttr2 (at) aol.com
Cheryll M.
The Richard Brush Connection
THE RICHARD BRUSH CONNECTION TO
THE BURTIS, FINNEY, RHODES, BINFORD, LOFTIN, BAKER FAMILIES
OF TEXAS
Compiled by: Harold Thomas Rhodes
Richard Brush, born most likely in England of Puritan parents. Names of his parents have not been discovered yet. Probably came to Massachusetts as a servant or apprentice to Joseph Cooke (ancestor of Laura Fidelia Jones) to escape persecution by the Royalists. He was a witness on the deed the citizens of Huntington, LI drew up in purchasing land from the Indians on Long Island. It is believed he was a mate on a ship and not available at Huntington at all times. Most likely the mate to Ambrose Sutton.
He was a home and land owner by 1 January 1668 and married Joanna Sammis about this time. He was townsman, collector, and trustee for the town from 1692 to 1705. Large land owner in the Huntington area.
Several of his descendants, John Burtis, Gilbert Brush, and Elkannah Brush, moved to Utica, New York area to get in on the boom caused by the building of the Erie Canal. It should be noted that Laura’s father, Joseph Jones, was at Utica during the boom. When the boom went to bust. Joseph Jones moved to Huntsville, TX before 1849. John Burtis moved first to Ohio then to Fayette County, Tennessee. Later one of his sons, John Smith Burtis, moved to Texas. He married Alice Finney daughter Laura Fidelia Jones. Gibert Brush died in Vorona, New York. Elkannah Brush moved to Texas in October 1834 and received a Spanish Land Grant near Refugio on Sarco Creek; later became involved in the Texas fight for independence. He took part in the capture of Goliad and on 10 October 1935 signed the Goliad Declaration of Independence.
By 1845 the Descendants of Richard Brush of Huntington, LI had put their mark on the State of Texas and local counties in Texas, as the Brush and Burtis Families had put their mark on Long Island.
Harold Rhodes, Great-grandson of Laura F. (Jones)(Finney) Rhodes and the GrGreat-grandson of Elkannah Brush.
References:
Madison County Historial Commission, A History of Madison County, Texas.
Nancy Loftin help!
Hi everyone,
My gggg grandmother was a Nancy Loftin. She was born between 1794-1798 probably in Georgia. She married Jonathan Morris on 23 Feb 1817 In Laurens, Georgia. I am looking for information on her and the names of her parents.
Many of the family trees here on Ancestry list her parents as Elkanah Loftin Jr and Ann Lovick. However I haven't been able to find any actual documentation to prove this. And both Elkanah Loftin Jr and Ann Lovick would probably have to have been in their 50s when having Nancy. And, as far as I can tell most of the rest of their children were born in 1770s.
I appreciate any help you can offer.
I have a photo, circa maybe late 1800's, of a handsome young man with the name of T? A. Loftin written on the back. Also written is L.B. Lytin so not sure which name belongs with the photo. If anyone is interested let me know. I'm no kin, I'm just trying to maybe find his line.
