Hi Julie

sorry for delay in replying but have just returned from vacation. i have several alexander logies but none married to a janet pirie in my tree. not sure if you have their marriage info but looked it up & found the following which might be of interest - "24 Dec 1879, Parish of Alves in Moyay - Alexander Logie, farm servant to Janet Pirie, domestic servant - Witnesses Charles Pirie & Elsie Logie" - according to the record Alexander was the son of Alexander Logie, crofter and Ann Logie (nee Young) while Janets parents were William Pirie, farm servant and Ann Pirie ( nee McDonald).

i'll keep my eyes open for more info & let you know if i fand anything else. our trees may be connected but if so the connection lies much further back in the past

good hunting

david

Hello Allan,
James Wilson, a brother of my grandfather Matthew, married Catherine Bell Logie in 1923. This was her second marriage, the first was to Thomas Henderson. I think that there may have been four children born to Catherine and Thomas. I would like to find out more about James Wilson who it is said, was in 'intelligence' in the First World War, and spent a long time as a prisoner of war. There seems to be a Buckhaven connection hence my message. If you know anything of these people I would indeed be interested to hear from you.
Regards,
Janet Wilson.

Dear Meredith

I think I have to disap[point you - therte are no Janes that I have discoverred in the Mitchell family. My 2x gt grandfather , James, is recorded in the 1861 English census as born in Scotland though I have no idea where. He married in Bridport in 1855 and the children that I have accounted for did not number a Jane amongst them. I have no idea about his parantage or siblings - Alas thats my brick wall. I'll keep looking though & if I come across a conection I'll let you know

Are you sure its the same John Loggie/logie in each marriage? .

Best Regards

David

Dear David,

I have come across a Jane Mitchell in my tree. I haven't figured out yet if my 2g grandfather, John Loggie/Logie, was a bigamist or not. Scotlands People shows marriage in 1846 to Agnes Findlay. She died in 1863 in Glasgow. I also found a marriage with Jane Mitchell, dau of Alexander Mitchell, a tailor in Fochabers, which occurred on 23 Dec 1852.

In 1858, John and Agnes had a daughter Margaret. All of the records I have checked list John's Parents as Gordon Logie and Catherine Anderson.

Very confusing to me as I don't have any idea how to go about finding records of divorce or annulment and such. They don't have that on Scotlands People!

Do you have any pertinent information on any of this?

Best Wishes,
Meredith

Good Morning David
Will look through letters for relevant info. Mr Tree of Lancaster Buildings is our man. Our very vague family anecdotes say he worked for the East India Company. All Tree sisters were actresses and/or singers.

They also claim John Chapman of the Westminster Review was JK's first cousin but I haven't found the connection. He is supposed to be related to the actor families Kemble and King but can't find a connection there either!

Family history never interested me until I went to a clairvoyant (much against my better judgement) 10 years ago. She told me I had a guardian angel who was a tall ,thin , good looking man with prominent nose, greying hair and beard and that he was surrounded by old fashioned printing presses. He was evidently waiting for me to start writing the books I have planned (true story but I hadn't told her that!) and that when I started he would step forward and I would wonder where my ability came from ...... Two months later my aunty forwarded a four page outline of the Chapman family history and I discovered my ggg grandfather John Kemble Chapman who happened to own the Sunday London Times. Since then I had found untold amounts of info but my main quest has always been to find a photo of JK to discover just what he did look like.

It is all pretty impossible from Port Lincoln in South Australia.

Hello Lyn

Thanks for getting back to me. I’m pleased you have the records & I envy you the letters, they must make fascinating reading. I’d be very interested in any references to her son-in-law Cosmo Logie or to her daughter, Mary Maria, or to their child Charles Harry Gordon as he would have been born about 3 years before Ellen died. Id also be interested in some dates for Ellen’s parents & siblings. Was the Cornelius you mention the same person referred to as “ Mr Tree of Lancaster Buildings, St Martins Lane“? Interestingly that’s just around the corner from the building I worked in for 10 years on the Strand.

On a related note I read in the Book section of today’s Sunday Times, a review of a new book which deals with, among others, John Chapman publisher of the Westminster Review in 1851. I’m not quite sure if or how this might relate to John Kemble Chapman but there may well be a family connection. The book is called 142 Strand: A Radical Address in Victorian London - by Rosemary Adams published by Chatto. If you haven’t already seen it I’d be happy to scan & email the review though I suspect you can access it online.

Kind Regards

David.
david.mitchell18@ntlworld.com

Hello David. Thankyou but I have copies of the 1841,51 &61 census. I have copies of many letters written by Ellen Kean to her friend. In them she talks about her mother Maria and sisters Martha (Mrs Quin) Maria (Mrs Bradshaw) and Ann (Chapman). I also have a copy of a death notice from the London Times mentioning the death of Ellen's father Cornelius Tree. I am quite happy to scan and forward relevant info via email.

Meredith

Searching through the OPR for Banns & Marriages on the Scotlands People website I came across a referrence to a marriage on 5 Nov 1846 in Duffus parish, Morayshire, between John LOGGIE and Agnes FINDLY. Given the vageries of Scottish spelling in the 19th C. these might be the parents of your great grandfather. The Frame Ref is FR1081 and the GROS # is 131/0004. Sorry there was no image or I would have obtained it for you.

I could find no reference to a birth for Robert in Morayshire under either spelling in the OPRs from 1847 to 1854 nor in the SRs from 1855 to 1857 but there were references to to other children - George born on 29 Jul 1849 in Elgin ( GROS # 135/00 0007) and John born 11 Apr 1847 also in Elgin ( GROS # 135/00 007)

If you havent used this website take a look -- www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk -- its a pay per view but it is well worth it.

Hope this is of some help.
The only Robert Logie I have found to date is the son of James Logie and Jean/Jane Thompson born 13 Nov.1825 though its possiblr your ggfather might be found in one of the many other pranches, some of whom went to Nova Scotia, to Australia and to South Africa. Have you tried Scotland's People -- www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. I have considerable research on the family lines - mostly from Abbottshall, Wemyss, Buckhaven and Fife. Hope we connect.
alexisj@surewest.net

The reverend John Logie is my ggggrandfather. He was born in Buckhaven, Wemyss Parish, Fife, Scotland on November 20, 1821. He emmigrated to the Province of Upper Canada (now Ontario, Canada) about 1841 and was ordained in Bracebridge, Ontario in 1849. He served as the first minister of Hensall Presbyterian Church, moved to High Point, North Carolina about 1879 and died and is buried in Valetta, East Tilbury Township, Kent county, Ontario Canada.

On February 13, 1851, he married Cathrine Murray and together, they had 17 children.

Further details can be found at www.jdick.net (just click on the genealogy button on the JAVA menu on the left of the screen).

One question for you though; I have been unable to find a valid "proof of birth/christening" for the Reverend. If you have one or have any further infrmation about the reverend or his forefolk/descendants, PLEASE get in touch.

-={jim}=-

Re: Loggie Family of Muirkirk

Happy New Year,
My records show that Wm Loggie married Barbara Harkness on 13 Feb 1857 in Muirkirk and their children were: Eliz - born 17 Jan 1858, John 24 Apr 1860, Hannah 5 Jan 1865, James 7 Apr 1866, George 18 May 1868, Agnes Rae 5 Mar 1870?, Robert 23 Aug 1870? and Mary Jane 23 Jul 1873. Obviously, Agnes Rae and Robert were not born 5 months apart.
Between the use of the family naming pattern and the fact that many Loggie family members stayed in Muirkirk to marry and raise their family, their are lots of Loggies to sort through. The Wm Loggie who married Barabara H. may have been the son of my John Logie who married Elizabeth Blythe in 1836. They had 10 children. Sorting out all these Loggies would be a great project for 2003. There is a fellow in the next town to me whose surname is Loggie. He told me once that he has a Rae in his family tree from Muirkirk. We never figured out the relationship. Please stay in touch.
George in Massachusetts

Happy New Year to you too...and thanks for the info.

I was pursuing the Maxwell's until I got bleary eyed. They also were prolific and there were many families that shared the same naming conventions. Agnes was quite a common name. My mother is 86 and remembers quite clearly up to a point. So I am sure that this Agnes is our Agnes. However, the families were not close and there are no personal records that survived.

They all used nick names within the family and later records show..Ellen became Nellie, references to Jack (John ) and I am still looking for a Neil that doesn't show up anywhere.

I do appreciate the additional info. I remain amazed at what is "out there".

Thanks.
