Logsdon Family DNA - Y-DNA - mtDNA - Project Started

Just wanted to report to all who are interested that a new Logsdon (Logston) Y-DNA project has been started. Alice Fairhurst and I are co-chairs and both of us have several years experience running projects through Family Tree DNA. I also have a Lyddon and a Smelser family project through Ancestry. If you are interested...please check us out at www.ftdna.com and search on Logsdon. You can join the project if you are a male surnamed Logsdon or someone who believes that their male lineage is Logsdon (or other surname derivative). You can also have your mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) tested and used to follow your maternal lines as well. Please contact us if you have questions.

Thanks....

John F. Smeltzer
johnsmeltzer @ comcast . net (remove spaces)

Hi, I realize it's been 6 years since you posted, but yes, this is my husbands family. He remembers Uncle Roscoe and Aunt Marie. As a matter of fact, we attended your grandmother's funeral here in Lafayette. If you or anyone else are looking for info on Martha Jane Nevitt, I was fortunate enough to put the pieces of the puzzle together a few years ago. In her later years she went by the name of Jennie. After her husband, John Logsdon died, she married a man by the name of Wills. I don't know his first name. Her headstone reads "Jennie Wills Logsdon", which is confusing, but this IS the same person as Martha Jane Nevitt. She is buried in the Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Indiana.

Thanks .... very much appreciated. Brenda (Smelser) Hay (owner of the Tracers Tripod site you mention) and I have been trying to figure out just exactly who is now in possession of the Reames Bible so we might try to take a look at it ourselves. Maybe just out of nostalgia more than anything else ... however, we would be hopeful that something ... even a small something ... had been overlooked in the transcription or may have been transcribed in error. And, therefore, that small something might be of additional value. The ties between these families in Hart County ... Logsdon, Durbin (for sure) and then Reames, Cobble, Smelser, Sturgeon, and even Dawson, are important clues to figuring them all out.

Nancy Logsdon/Logston of KY, wife of Samuel Bradley

Hello, I am new to Ancestry and this is my first post. I am trying to find out about the family of my 4th great-grandmother Nancy Logston (or Logsdon). All I know is that she was apparently born in 1809 in Hardin County and died in 1879, also in Hardin County. She married Samuel Bradley (son of Elijah Bradley and Mary Catherine Logsdon) on November 3rd, 1828. I have the names and birthdates of their children, if needed. Of course, I don't know if all this information is correct!
I have absolutely no information about Nancy's parents, etc. Since there are so many other Kentucky Logsdons in my tree, I naturally wonder if she is related to them. I am dying to find out. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I wish I could tell you. I don't know if this is the Patience you are interested in. I often see her confused with a Patience Logsdon who married a Durbin. This particular Patience married John Flatt. Unfortunately, she is one of my brick walls. I have seen Edward Logsdon listed over and over as her father and a number of different mothers for her, but there are no source citations. The only explaination for whoher parents were that I have seen is Edward Logsdon was listed near John Flatt in the 1799 Tax list for Barren County, KY. The issue I have with that is that I have also discovered a Thomas Logsdon in the area and additionally, who knows, she could have also been a niece of one of these gentlemen and met John Flatt when she came to visit her Uncle. I belong to a Logsdon My Family Website and no one there has been able to help as of yet. I would be happy to send you an invite to the site if you are interested. They are great people and if you are a Logsdon, probably distant cousins of your's.

Please email me directly and I am going to hook you up with a big bunch of Logsdon/Logston researchers. I see she was from Hart CO, KY and that is where my main focus of Logsdon research originates. Although her father is not jumping out at me as to who he himself belonged to. I think on the 1900 census his name actually say "Joe" Logston.

pix8560@yahoo.com

Patti

You state that Vinnie was born in KY. Was this Logsdon family from KY too? There were many, many Logsdon families in KY. Where have you found them on the census? If you can give a county location for them and about when Rosa was born someone may be able to help. I have a lot of Logsdon's in my file but am not recognizing this family.

Not a direct line of mine but I have Mahala born abt 1839, daughter of John Logsdon & Ellender Goodman of Hart Co, KY. I have no spouse for her. I note that the Mahala you are talking about named a daughter Ellender/Ellener. I see that as a clue.

There was a migration pattern of several Logsdon families to Jasper Co, Iowa and then some back and forth to KY. The general area of Hart, Barren, Edmonson Co, etc. John is likely one of them since he is found in Illinois in 1850 and then back to KY after that. His location in 1850 is Knox Co, IL which would be an area that would put him on the KY to IA path. Here is a link to my family file that will land you on the Mahala I am referring to.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Thanks for the info on Rebecca. I didn't know she had married twice. I alsways thought she had died before the 1910 census was done because her two children Henry Thomas and Leonard are shown living with her brother John and his family. Henry Thomas Pierce was my grandfather. I'm thinking she must have died between 1907 and 1910. Must be why I cant find anything else on her, didn't know she had a new last name. I'll have to look into that. Would you happen to know any other info on
her? Any other kids with Johnson maybe? I'd appreciate any help...thanks again, Tina

I don't know if you got an answer to your question or if you still check back but I will post an answer here any how. You gave perfect information with names and dates and I was at a dead end with my Munfordville, Hart, Kentucky Logsdon, so I decided to see if I could get info on yours. I see your family has had their share of deaths with grandparents raising grandchildren. I James was still single in 1910 and 1920 but by 1930 he was living with his sister Nora B McCollins with his son Harvey, which suggests his wife was already gone. A census was not going to find her name so I tried for some death information and found on Harvey L. Logsdon, born 29 May 1925, mothers name was Ethyl Malden. I hope you find this post. I enjoyed finding info even if it wasn't the family I tracking.
Marg

Re: William Logsdon-Honora O'Flynn

Just curious.. I've only just put together some info on the LOGSDON line, which is not mine, but a friends.... Given other information on the family who supposedly appears out of nowhere in about 1500, with the theory of two families (brothers/cousins) getting to Bedford in the same timeframe, as ANYONE yet explored the possibility that they were using the LAXTONE spelling, prior to 1500? There is a John/Johanne de Laxtone in the Biggleswade area in the late 1300s, it would seem to me, that he might be the ancestor of at least some of the Bedfordshire LOGGESDENs and other spellings...

Again, I'm VERY new to this line, and probably not going to spend a great deal more effort on it, but thought this possibility (were I a descendant) of LAXTONE being a connection, is surely worth the effort of exploration. I noticed, in one webpage about William and Honora, that either he or his father was listed as William Laxtone, when the gift of "50 acres for coming to America" was listed.
(see: http://www.lovinhell.com/gen/GenBook1_113.html)

Searches on John Laxtone and variants on Google turn up minimal bits and pieces, but if anyone has any connections in Bedfordshire, perhaps looking up that spelling might offer more information???

Jared
Jeanne, thanks. I am interested in the Hart County Logsdon's ... in particular those married to Smelser's ... Keziah / Thomas. Which line is Thomas' line of Logsdon ... who is his father?

And, then Catherine Smelser / James Oliver Logsdon. Is this the same Logsdon line as that of Thomas? If not, how do they connect?

The Reames Bible is of interest to me because it records Reames, Logsdon and Smelser marriages and is essentially the only place we have ever found the name "Ocee Kershatt" listed as wife of my Jacob Smelser b. abt 1760. The obit of Jacob's daughter Keziah (married to Thomas) ... lists her mother as Elisabeth so we think we have two different wives to look for ... we don't know the surname of either of them. Or, alternatively, Ocee and Elizabeth may be the same person?
