Dear Harriot, sorry it took me so long to get back to you! Now from what I can tell the migration route for the African American Lomax's starts in VA. With one English family. The eariliest accounts of an African American Lomax in VA is Sophronia Lomax Arnold, in the Slave Narratives: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ViewStory.aspx?tid=6368232&... By the time they where in SC it was the son's of the orignal english family. From there the white Tillman Lomax went into Mississippi and had son's by the names of Tillman and James Lomax. My Great Great Grandfather Willis Lomax was born about 1854 in Richland, Holmes, Mississippi; and we are not sure if he left Miss. with the white family James Lomax when he moved into Arkansas but he lived there and married Amanda Took. We are looking for any information on Willis Lomax his brothers sisters or parents.

His name was Roosevelt Lomax Jr. His father, my great grandfather, was Roosevelt Lomax Senior. I am not sure what year he was born. I think it was between 1915 and 1917. I'm sorry I don't know more info. Let me know if that helps.

I am just curious, my ggrandmother Amy was a slave in South Carolina, in the area of Abbeville. Based on information in the census she was born around 1835, she was the property of William Lomax. In his will a slave named Imy was left to William's son Albert. I am not sure how Grandma Amy came to Virginia (was she sold and brought to VA or did she run away with her infant son William Henry), where she married Peter Washington. My grandfather William Lomax was the only one of Grandma Amy's children that had the surname Lomax, her other three children were Peter's children. According to family lore my grandfather's father was Grandma Amy's former owner.

My curiosity is does your family haze roots in South Carolina.

Harriott in VA
Looking for LOMAX/WASHINGTON (SC, VA), MOORE (VA)
BOOTH (VA) & ALSTON (NC)

I have a photo of an office staff - all the names of the people are listed. One of the names is "Edward Lomax".

I haven't been able to determine where the photo was taken (the state). All it says on the front of the photo is "Bond Section, P.O. Dept., Jan. 13, 1947". There is also the name of the photographer "Scherer 1006-K-". There is nothing written on the back of the picture.

I found the picture at an Estate Sale of a local antique dealer. Her home was filled to the rafters (every single inch), with antiques including a huge pile of old photos. This was the only photo I found with names on it. I couldn't just leave it there since it had so many people's name on it (was afraid all the unpurchased photos would end up in a trash can). We live in Orlando, Florida which is where we purchased the photo - I don't think the photos were from our area but could be wrong.

The photo scan is attached.

Sincerely,
jammatun
Looking for information on the African American Willis Lomax abt 1850-1854 Richland, Holmes, Mississippi. it seems the 1860 slave schedules give no information on children so we are at a impasse. We think that he was related to the black Tillman Lomax or The molato James T Lomax. Any information would be welcome. Thank you

lba2us@yahoo.com
