If you are still on this post, please review my post of May 29, 2009 regarding Lonkhurst to Longhust for we are writing about the same lineage.

What I have learned about English Census listings is that each Census year seemed to have its own rules about listing where you were born.

One year the answer listed was Ashford, ten years later the same person was listed as Orlestone and ten years later, it was Warehorne.

Ashford is the District, Warehone is the Civil Parish and Orlestone is the town. This person may have never moved in 30 years but it may appear so.

Regards.

Lonkhurst to Longhurst

I thought I would create a new thread and in it, continue to answer my own questions in as much as it may help someone else.

My family came from the Ashford District in Kent and it seems the name that was used there was Lonkhurst not Longhurst.

Over time it appears that most of the Lonkhurst family names changed to Longhurst including mine when they reached America.

My lineage is, starting with Thomas: Thomas 1826 Warehorne, William 1790 Orlestone, Richard 1754 Mersham, Richard 1730 Ruckinge, Richard and Richard.

This all started with my stumbling over a ships manifest listing a family as Lankhorst that had the first names of the family I was looking for. I then judged that the ship's Captain had spelled Longhurst wrong. Later still I studied the manifest closer and found that the "a" was in fact an "o" and I then was able to solve the problem.

I hope this helps someone solve their riddle.

Regards.

I thought I would reply to my own message since I have solved some of the mystery.

Thomas was from Kent, England, I don't know the town yet. He came to the US in 1828 with his father William, his mother Susannah and four siblings, Mary Ann, Eliza, William and Clark.

When his family came in through the Port of New York from Rye, England, I believe that the name was spelled incorrectly which is why they were invisible.

If this gives anyone more info to help me further, I would be grateful.

Regards.

Hi Brian,
Just looked quickly at the postings and saw yours relating to the Longhurst's. I too am desecended from John & Charlotte Trotman (my 4th Gt.Grand). Hadn't got info on the Nesmyth's. Where did you get that.
I descend from George Longhurst b1809.
Where do you fit in to the Longhurst line. I think some of the trees I've looked at on Ancestry have gone a bit wrong so am looking at them one by one to check against my info - a lot taken from George Longurst's personal diaries.Haven't posted mine on there yet but will do so soon.
Pam

Longhurst of Iowa

Thomas Longhurst, the progenitor of a majority of the Longhurst Family from Iowa, was born in England c.1826. He married Julia Van Wie, from Buffalo, Erie, New York, in approx. 1856. They had a daughter, Julia "LuLu" in New York in 1856 and their second child, a daughter, in 1857 in Dubuque, Iowa her name was Mary E. "Mattie".

Thomas eventually moved to Chicago and lived with his second child, Mattie, and her husband Edgar Bunker. It appears that Julia Stayed in Dubuque and lived with two of their sons, George and John.

I believe I have identified two of Thomas' siblings William born in England c. 1819 or 1823, of Dubuque and Chicago and Mary Ann Morehouse born in England c. 1817 and lived in Kent Co., Michigan. It appears that Thomas and William were architects.Thomas became a land developer with his son-in-law, Edgar Bunker. I may have found another sibling, James, but I am not sure.

That is all I know of Thomas, I have run into a wall. I think he came to Canada with the Capel Surrey group in 1832. Thomas may have been a been a nephew of Joseph's maybe a son of James', I am just guessing.

It may be a coincidence but I believe that one of George's (Rebecca Weller) son, Joseph lived in Iowa also.

Long post, but that is it, can anyone help me, with this quandary?

Regards.

At long last the birth certificate of Horace Edwin Longhurst has turned up. He was born 4th December1881 at Bickley cottages Tonbridge. His father is Richard Longhurst and mother Isabella Beaty (Beally) who I guess were probably married in Eneskillen around 1873 (not able to trace marriage cert.). By1881 Richard had left the army and was a Railway Labourer. Horrace has not been found yet on the 1891 census - he is not listed with the rest of the family. By 1901 he had joined the army and was serving in India. He was demobbed in 1913 but probably was called up on the reserve list in 1914. He turns up again in 1916 on his marriage certificate to Florence Jaycock aged 32? with an address of The war Hospital, Epsom, Surrey.

Hi Katherine:

Nine years is a long time to answer a posting but here goes!

Ann Nesmyth (b 1748) was the daughter of James Nesmyth (b 1717), my 5G Grandfather. According to my notes Ann married John Longhurst in 1765 and had 15 children including John who married Charlotte Trotman. John and Charlotte had 13 children including an Ebenezer whoses dates I have as 1822-1862. I have no further information beyond that point.

Included in my tree are upward of 90 LOnghursts although I have very sketchy details of many of those.

If our families are linked it would be good to exchange information with you.

Brian

Doris Longhurst was born about 1911 in UK to James and Edna Longhurst. Family legend has it that she was "taken on holiday" to Australia by childless family friends who never returned her. Lack of funds prevented any search for her. Her name may have been changed. Any ideas?

Thank you so much for replying to my query. I got her name from her son's birth cert she is Ellen Longhurst formerly Cole. On her death certificate her daughter aged 12 was the informant "present at the death" It is a very sad story . I had already wondered if he kept two wives!! One in London and one further downstream! Ideal for a bargemen. The fact that there is no marriage records for Ellen seems to bear this out. I had already noticed Francis (Fanny) Peskett - I think I will send for a copy of their marriage cert and check if James' fathers details match what I have. Thanks again Sue Williams

Their marriage was registered Dec 1/4 1871 at Dartford. Can't find a death entry for her until 1891, (maybe he couldn't marry Ellen). Can't find her on 1881 but on 1891 she is a widow.

Dawn

Hi Gary

There are many ommissions on familysearch.org

There are many incorrect submissions on familysearch.org

The ages given on censuses are not always consistent. There wasn't the emphasis on birth dates and ages as there is now.

The ages on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years for those over 15.

Places of birth on censuses are not always consistent.

On the 1851 census your William and Mary give their place of birth as Surrey, Rusper 1793 and Horsham 1794. In 1861 widowed William is listed as Surrey, Capel 1793, in 1871 Sussex, Rusborough (Rusper) 1789.

There is a baptism on the Rusper Baptism register for William in 1791, son of Thomas & Elizabeth nee Mitchell.

Ann Hubbard was baptised 2 June 1793 at Capel.

Have you studied actual source material or have you based your research solely on internet findings?

Are you in contact with other members of William & Mary's descendants who have posted their tree on the internet?

The information on the concord site was collected from many sources over the years and have not been personally verified by Cam. I have many instances of inconsistences on his tree.

I think we may have to agree to disagree on each others interpretations of events which took place 200 years ago.

Dawn

Hi Gary

Yes, William Longhurst son of John & Mary was baptised at Capel on 1st July 1792 but he married Ann Hubbard 19th October 1813 in Capel.

The William Longhurst who married Mary Burrage did so at Warnham in Sussex on 20 Sept 1812. This is from the Sussex Marriage Index produced by the Sussex Family History Group.
The 1851 census suggests this William was from Rusper and Mary from Horsham, both Sussex, although Rusper is just on the Surrey/Sussex border. In the 1861 census there are 2 William Longhursts both from Capel with similar birth years. The first children born to William and Mary were not born in Surrey. The family moved to Ashtead at some point where their later children were baptised.

The family of William & Ann stayed in Surrey moving to Dorking only a few miles from Capel.

The extracted details on the familysearch site are fairly accurate but there are many ommissions, the submitted entries should be treated with extreme caution. Having studied the submissions carefully there are many errors and suppositions. The parish registers on the IGI for Capel have been extracted, 25 names are there, but on the actual parish register there are 57 names.

My 4xg-grandfather was Walter born 1780, the 4th of 10 children born to John Longhurst & Mary Wheeler. William baptised 1792 was 9th.

Dawn
For definite, only as far as Joseph Longhurst and Margaret Steere.

There is no baptism linking him to the other Longhurst trees on the internet which go back to 1515. I have a possible baptism for him in Oxted but that is another Longhurst family.

He is not mentioned in the will of the father that he is attributed to, nor in the wills of his supposed siblings. Plus the property he is living at 'Yards' had been sold by the other Longhurst family to John Stone in 1691 according to the manorial records.

I've tracked Walter & Bethia through the censuses, they left Capel & Betchworth in Surrey and moved around. In 1851 they are in Chelsea, in 1861 Bethia is a widow in Chelsea (Walter died in 1855), in 1871 she is in Shoreditch where her death is registered in 1879.

Dawn

I'll send you the details if you need them.

Also where have you looked for her birth entry?

The Index at freebmd is NOT complete, however you can look at uploaded images of the index books for free at ancestry.co.uk
It could be quite long winded but I just looked from 1890 to 1893 and there were 3 Alice Longhursts, 1 born Kent, 1 registered in 1893 in Hambledon which does not include Bookham, but 1 registered in 1890 for Epsom which does cover Bookham.

Shame the online passenger lists at the National Archive link only go to 1919 so far!

Sorry nothing definite yet but I'll keep looking.

Dawn

Alice Maud Longhurst

I am trying to trace an Alice Maud LONGHURST. Unfortunately I don't have much information to go on. The only information I have is from the marriage certificate of my Grandfather, Albert Gustav BAHR, and Alice in Queensland, Australia in 1921. Alice is listed as being born in Bootcham (I think this must be Bookham), Surrey, England. Her parents are listed as Harry Longhurst & Elizabeth. There is no last name listed for Elizabeth. From her age at the time of the marriage (29) her birth date should be around 1892/3. So far I have been unable to find any record of her passage here to Australia. Actually, apart from the marriage certificate, it is almost as if she never existed. My Grandfather and Alice never had any children and my Grandfather remarried in 1933 and also fathered 3 children with a different women in 1930/31/32 between his first & second marriage. I have not been able to find out what happened to her after she married my Grandfather.
A possible link is the family of Henry Longhurst & Elizabeth Bosworth in Little Bookham, Surrey. They have a daughter listed as Maudie in the 1891 census, born around 1886. I have found a listing in the BDM index for an Alice Maud born around 1886 in the Epsom District. The dates don't quite add up but it is a possibility.
Another possible connection to this family comes from some information I have read in other posts on the web about this family and it seems that one of the elder brothers (Herbert) went to Australia. I have found a record of a Herbert LONGHURST & family on a ship called the OSTERLEY that departed London in May 1914 for Brisbane, Australia, but I am not sure if this is connected.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for looking up those things for me.

I have looked at the 1901 UK census and I also came across that Alice. From memory her parents were David & Mary-ann? From bits that I have read all over the net, David is the older brother of the Henry in that other family that I was looking at in Little Bookham. I also think the entry in the BDM index for Alice in 1890 in Epsom district is this same Alice because the dates seem to add up.

Regarding the 1901 census, I actually couldn't find most of Henry & Elizabeth's family at all. (Except for a couple of the older married children and their families).

I will keep looking through all the BDM indexes I can find.

When I saw the UK passenger lists were now up to 1919, I really hoped that I would find her. At least it narrows down the dates for her entry into Australia, as she was married here in Dec 1921. That will also help me at this end in Australia.

Renee

Would anyone know if the Maudie Longhurst listed on the 1891 census as the daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Longhurst at Brooks Cottages, Little Bookham, was actually Alice Maud Longhurst? This seems to fit with an entry for an Alice Maud Longhurst in the BDM in 1886 in the registration district Epsom.
I have a record of an Alice Maud Hedges who nominated the family of Herbert Longhurst (who is a son from this family) to Australia in 1914. This Alice Maud Hedges came to Australia on the ship Rimutaka with husband John (James?) Hedges and children Winifred (6) & Horace (1) in 1911. Renee
