Those are my grandparents on my father's side. My father was John Walter Longstaff, Jr. and he was married to Elaine M. Murphy. Dad died in 1958, and my mother died in 1988. His brother, Ralph Stanley Longstaff, was married to Elizabeth (?), and their son, Ralph, Jr., was married to Jody. They had 3 kids, Stanley,Jody, and Toni. Stanley passed away in Eliot ME in August of 2007. The 2 girls live in Canada now. My uncle George was another brother who had a daughter Jo Lorraine. There were more brothers and sisters that lived out in Arizona with kids, but I never really knew them. There also is some American Indian offspring out in South or North Dakota. My Dad was the 7th son of 9/10 boys, and the rest of living offspring were girls. Back then, the families in the Dakota Terr/States had a lot of kids. Not all babies made it. I got my middle name after my Uncle George. I wish I had more for you, but only have some tin clip pictures from @ 1880 of family gatherings with some of the men guarding with long rifles. I would be happy to email a couple of them to you if you give me an email address.
David George Longstaff
South Florida

Hi
I wondered if anyone could send me any information on George Longstaff born 1900 son of George Longstaff and Catherine O'Hara. George was born in Hartlepool and at the age of 1 was a lodger in Rotherham. I was led to believe that his mother died in childbirth when George was born but I think I found her as Kate Longstaff in the 1901 census. As Catherine was born in Stockton and the person she was lodging with was from Hartlepool but I could not find her in the 1911 census. George was eventually reunited with his father in the 1911 census in Nottingham but his mother remains a mystery. They were married 10 years before they had George so he believed But it appears strange that he was a lodge more or less after he was born. Another coincidence is that there was another George Longstaff born 1894 aged 7 as a lodger in Rotherham born in Hartlepool and with no family like my grandfather. I don't think there is a link to these two George's that live at separate addresses in Rotherham. I was just wondering how these children from Hartlepool became lodgers in Rotherham and like my grandfather was reunited with his father. To have two children with the same names and born and finish up in the same place is an unusual coincidence or is it not! Any help would be appreciated. I keep wondering if these two are cousins but cannot link them so far. Thank you for reading my email and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
George was remarried in 1881 to Jane Robinson IRVING (bapt 18 Nov 1861 at Soulby). They had at least 5 children, Alice (1881), Ada (1883), Emily (1886), James Wilfred (1890)and Mary Lizzie (1896), all born in Soulby and mostly bapt at Kirkby Stephen Methodist. In Anglican terms,Soulby is a chapelry within Kirkby Stephen Parish.

I am a descendant of George's great aunt Margaret, and have details of several generations of his ancestors if you would like them. Probably better to do this by direct email, as there is a lot of data, so feel free to reply to my email address.

Regards

Barry

Longstaff, Lumsden, Craig is there an adoption somewhere???

I am trying a long shot here but would appreciate any help as I struggling.I have tried the Lumsden board but am still stuck!
My maiden name is Lumsden and my fathers mother was Eleanor Craig Lumsden (born 10/5/1912 as far as I know as I can not find her birth on the BMD register) She passed her name onto her son as she could not use the fathers name(unknown)
My father was brought up from the age of 7 by his gran Elizabeth Longstaff Craig (born in Newcastle on 16/4/1887 ) who apparantly married a Thomas Lumsden they lived in Horatio street in Newcastle upon Tyne at the time of Eleanors birth. Eleanor died aged 30 leaving at least 4 children by at least 2 fathers.
I decided as I was not having much success to see if this means anything to anyone with the Longstaff connection as my family have no idea where this name came from. I realise this is a longshot but as I said I am not very adept at this tree hunting yet so am grateful tfor any help
Thank you
Alison

Regret unable to help. Most of my father's family linked to Yorkshire (Hull & Leeds). Perhaps try there. IGI has good number of references in Leeds. Also many Longstaff references in Lincolnshire.

Longstaff - Cambridgeshire

I am looking for a Longstaff family from Cambridgeshire. John Longstaff married Mary Fabb in 1833 in Milton. They had three children:
John Cotton Longstaff - b1839
Sarah Ann Longstaff - b1840
William G Longstaff - b1834
I am actually looking for the father of John Longstaff, who (from census records) was born in 1811. However, using parish records for the area, I cannot find any record of a John Longstaff born at this time.
I have found a record of a John Longstaff born in 1798 in Hardwick, but this is a rather large discrepancy. The name "Cotton" (his son's middle name) is unusual, and the John Longstaff born in 1798 has a mother whose name was Elizabeth Cotton.
Does anyone have any information that could help me unravel this little mystery?

I hope that this is not a duplicate posting. The last attempt generated an error message.

Although we do not seem to have a common ancestor, the names that you mention are very similar to several in our family tree. For example, in our lineage there is a John Longstaff who was born in Morpeth (not far from Durham) on March 18, 1811. This father was Thomas Longstaff, his mother Jane Reed.

Hannah is also a name that occurs with some frequency in our family tree (as do Thomas, John, etc.). Further, among our ancestors there is a Thomas Willis who married Dorothy Nicholson. Their daughter Margaret married a James Longstaff (also a son of Thomas Longstaff and Jane Reed). One of their daughters was named Hannah.

You can see the early generations of our family tree on our family web site: http://www.longstaff.info

It would be fun to exchange information if we find that we have ancestors in common.

Re: Longstaff Family

This thread makes me curious. It is at least possible that the George Longstaff mentioned here is related to individuals who appear in my family tree. Therefore, I ask whether you have further information about George Longstaff's parents. It seems to me possible that the George Longstaff, born in 1847 was the son of a Thomas Longstaff who appears in my ancestry. That Thomas Longstaff (I don't know who he married) was born in Morpeth in 1821. He had a brother, George, also born in Morpeth, who was born in 1818. Other members of this generation do show up in Yorkshire (as well as Lincolnshire and Lancashire) so I wonder. The Thomas (1821) and George (1818) Longstaff in my family line were the children of Thomas Longstaff and Jane Reed who were married in Morpeth on 18 Mar 1808.
In short, might the Thomas Longstaff who was the father of George Longstaff (1847) be the son of Thomas Longstaff and Jane Reed?

Thank you. It now seems relatively clear that the Thomas Longstaff who was the father of your George Longstaff (b. 1847) probably is not the Thomas Longstaff of my ancestry. He was born in 1821. The Thomas of your ancestry became the father of Anne in February, 1837. At that time the Thomas from my family would have been only 16 years old, placing his marriage at age 15 or earlier. This seems to me very unlikely.

Thanks for sharing your family history. At this point, the Thomas Longstaffs in each of our ancestry seem to be different individuals.

Best wishes.

Tom Longstaff
Thomas Longstaff, born in Durham ca. 1786

I am looking for information about a Thomas Longstaff who, to the best of my knowledge, was born in Durham about 1786. He married Jane Reay (also spelled Reed on some documents) of Stannington in Morpeth on 17 Mar 1808. They had 10 children (whose names and dates of birth can be seen on our family web site: http://www.longstaff.info). I would like to take my family history back another generation but have not been able to find information about this Thomas Longstaff. I will be happy to hear from anyone in this family line.

Thank you for your response. As I indicated in my previous message, I would like to learn more about Thomas Longstaff. His marriage record lists him as a "native of Durham." I know a good deal about him after his marriage and I know a good deal about his descendants but know nothing of his earlier life, his parents, etc.
Hi Donald,

An old thread i know, but i too am researching the Hall/Longstaff connection. (have just started!)

My (3 x) great grandmother was Mary Jane Longstaff (1835-1927). she married a James Hall and they had a son called Joseph. (other children, Dorothy, William, Mary Jane, and others)

I am not sure about his middle name but could this be your uncle?

Regards,
Kim Craig

Elaine
I don't think there is any connection between the families as my ggrandfather Francis Longstaff was christened in Catterick on 26.6.1846. He married Mary Storey in Catterick on 18.5.1872. His father was George Longstaff (Langstaff) and his mother was Mary (no surname). Any help would be appreciated.
Pat

Re: Looking for Agnes Longstaff b 1846 in Brooklyn.

Agnes Longstaff was born in Brooklyn Long Island New York. her parents were John Longstaff and Mary Todd. She was my GG grandmother.
Agnes' father sailed from England to New York on the ship the Yazoo in May 1842. Agnes, her mother and siblings Margaret, Mary, Henry sailed from England to New York on the Oxford 1842.
In 1852 Agnes her father, mother and siblings John Henry and Mary Ann sailed from New York to Victoria Australia on the Nebraska and disembarked on the Forest Creek Gold Diggings in 1853.
According to the 4 certificates I have obtained in my family history search the indication exists that Agnes Longstaff was born in 1944, unless she added 2 years to her age on all of these documents. After speaking to several cousins it would appear that Agnes modified her age because her father married her off at the age of 16, to William John Archer a man 12 years her senior to recover a gambling debt.
I have Agnes Longstaff's marriage certificate to William John Archer stating her age as 18 as of 07 May 1862.
Agnes married 3 times.

? adoption of Longstaff

A bit more information, if this means anything at all I would appreciate a contact
Regarding my last message I have discovered that my ancestors the Craig family had (on the1871 and 1881 census) a young lady registered as domestic servant living at their address called Ellen Longstaff born around 1851.The addresses were
1871 The SwirleNewcastle UponTyne
1881 13 Ouse Street Newcastle Upon Tyne
The reason I am trying to sort out this link is that I have discovered my grandmother(Eleanor Craig Lumsden )whose surname I was given is not registered with that name at birth, allthough she was when she later married. Her mother was Elizabeth Longstaff Craig according to family around now. I hope this makes some sense and thank you for taking the time bto read it Alison
