Hello Elise
Was your John (b 1808) a pipemaker? Is it possible that Martha was John's second or third wife? (ie have you seen a marriage entry giving his status, bachelor/widower).

I look forward to hearing from you when you've got time.
Alice was Teddy Roosevelt's daughter; she married a Longworth. I've been looking for my Longworths for years with no luck. Anna Longworth m. Charles Weeks c. 1840 or so in the Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island NY (then Queens County, later Nassau County). I've just heard from someone who gave me a clue regarding their location; it might have been in Suffolk County on LI.

Hi Alexandra,
Thanks so much for your post! We've been unable to find anything at all about the Longworths, but maybe we need to check further afield, i.e., in the SUFFOLK county deed books! I don't know of any other Longworths except for the one who married Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice. We don't even know if he's related to our Weeks/Longworth family. Thanks for that knock on the side of the head; we'll check further out on LI. If you don't find anyone else related to the Longworths, I know my family would be happy to have anything you'd like to pass along! Since thanks for the info, Janice Bernath

Hi,
I live in Huntington, NY, on Maple Hill Road. My house used to belong to Mrs. J. B. Longworth. Her name was Mary. Her husband must have traveled a lot because I have a box full of letters between the two. I also have family pictures. I didn't want to just throw them out so I decided to see if I can find any Longworth family members online. I hope we are talking about the same J.B. Longworth. I also have a picture of two children labeled Charles and Lillian Longworth (although they might be nice and nephew). I was told that Mrs. Longworth was the first female fire marshal in NYC.

Hi Brian
Thanks for your reply.

Regarding my John Longworth, I have his DOB c1808 (if I recall, this is doing a calculation from the 1841 census). He was married to Martha (maiden name unknown) and they had 6 children (Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Martha and James) over quite a length of time. Unfortunately I do not have his parents names at this stage.

hope this helps, thanks again
Elise
I started out researching the Longworths of Australia. That expanded to the UK then to Ireland and now to the US. I have nearly 7000 individuals in my database and my aim is now to compile a history of the Longworth Family throughout the world. I have many large gaps in my information and any help that you could give me would be appreciated.

Thank you
Brian Longworth
Australia

Rod, I concur with a lot of what you have said here, however I have the Roosevelt/Longworths being traced back to Lancashire via Ireland.

I believe that all the Longworths in the world are related and can trace their family origins back to Manchester in England. I am undertaking the enormous task of trying to link together as many families as I can. I currently have over 6000 names in my data base dating back to 1118

The family was of Celtic decent. Probably of the Cymrie branch, that inhabited what is now North Central England, including the County of Lancashire in pre Roman times. They maintained their purity until the middle of the sixteenth century when migrations sent them to Ireland and later to America. The first migrations from Bolton started in Sir Walter Raleigh's time, about 1585, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Their homes were to the North, East and South of Bolton and they were tillers of the soil. "Strip" farming was practiced in their community and when the English decreed that all families should adopt a "surname" they took the name of "Longworth". "Worth" - meaning land and "Long" - meaning that it was of long or large extent; hence the name "Longworth" is known as a local or place name. At Belmont a few miles North of Bolton there is a Longworth Moor and a Longworth Clough ("Cluff"- a steep sided ravine), actually a narrow valley containing a small stream. In 1985 there were about 50 Longworths listed in the local phone book. ( Encyclopaedia Britannica, ninth edition, gives a long and historical account of the Celtic races inhabitants of Lancashire County from which most of this has been selected.)

Clara Longworth de Chambrun, who was the sister of Nicholas Longworth, the speaker of the House, and who did a biography of her brother. She had married a French aristocrat, hence her name, and became related to the Lafayette family claims the Longworth family name comes from the French name Longue Epee, which she says was a Norman name and hence dates back to the Norman Conquest of 1016. Longue Epee translated into Long Sword, then became corrupted into Longworth. This version Probably has more to do with snobbery than scholarship, since it sure beats being descended from a bunch of Lancashire ploughmen,

The Family History starts with Peter Longworth who was born in Lancashire, England about 1625. There are no records of Peter’s Parents. Peter was apparently was a soldier in the Cromwellian Army who stayed on in Ireland. He settled in Athlone and in 1650 Married Elizabeth Reyly or Relie. Elizabeth was born about 1632 in Ireland, the daughter of James Reyly and she died after 1698 in Ireland.

By 1662 Peter Longworth had moved to Creggan, where he had obtained land . In 1698 Peter Longworth died in Athlone, Ireland. Peter Longworth was the ancestor of many of the numerous families of Longworth. When he died 1698 he left six sons to five of whom he leaves legacies, Viz: James, John, Ralph, Henry, and Francis to be paid after the death of his wife Elizabeth. (from the Dr. John Burgess papers found at the public library in Athlone, Ireland)
Children of Peter Longworth and Elizabeth Reyly:
1. Francis Longworth ca 1652 Creggan -
2. John Longworth ca 1654 Creggan - died in Toubut, Ireland
3. Ralph Longworth ca 1656 Creggan -
his father left him Bonnahinly & Creggan Mill
4. Peter Longworth ca 1658 Creggan - ca 1691 Ireland
5. Henry Longworth ca 1660 Creggan -
6. James Longworth ca 1662 Creggan -
7. first daughter Longworth ca 1663 Creggan -
8. seventh son Longworth ca 16xx Creggan -
9. second daughter Longworth ca 1679 Creggan -

The Irish Branch.

Peter Longworth from "somewhere in England" went to Ireland as a soldier, probably with Oliver Cromwell in 1649. He settled in Athlone, County Weastmeath in 1650, and had moved to Creggan by 1662. He married Elizabeth, daughter of James Relie, one of the prominent citizens of the town, and by her he had six sons, five of whom are named in his will: - JAMES, JOHN, RALPH, HENRY, and FRANCIS, the sixth probably pre deceased him. His will begins ... " I bequeath my soul to my Great Creator, hoping in and through the merits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to have full and free pardon of all my sins, ... etc."
To his third son Ralph, he left his properties at Bonnahinley and Creggan Mill, (about three miles from Athlone). Ralph's descendants became the "official line", and through the next four generations acquired 6,547 acres in County Weastmeath, 3,271 acres in County Galway, 2,422 acres in County Offaly and 1,192 acres in County Roscommon; a grand total of 13,432 acres by 1874. The last of the line died in 1929 and the estate was sold, bringing to an end the almost 300 year old reign of the Longworth family in the Irish Agricultural scene.

It is obvious that one of the other five sons is the ancestor of Francis 1821, (the first Longworth to arrive in Australia), but it would seem almost impossible to establish which one due to lack of records. There were many families living in the area in the 1700's and early 1800's. Many of them were tenant farmers of their more affluent relatives. Francis 1758.-1804 of Creggan Mill was undoubtedly one and his father (probably) Francis (Abt. 1727-95) was a grandson of Peter-.
Francis 1821-91, emigrated to Australia at 27 years of age, with his sister Mary,
24 years of age, arriving in Sydney on 04/06/1849. Five years later he married Ann Cox on 14/05/1854. They lived at Ghinni Ghinni on the Manning River and had eleven children, two of whom died in infancy; Eliza, Francis, Jane, Hanna, John, Robert, Benjamin, Henrietta, Albert, Ambrose and William.

The English Branch

Thomas Longworth and his wife Rose Ann and their first two children, William and James Henry, arrived in Australia on the "ARTEMISIA" on 28 December 1849.
Thomas had a contract to work for the Australian Agricultural Company in its Newcastle mines, digging and wheeling coal to the bottom of the shaft for the princely sum of one shilling and nine pence a ton. There was also a bonus of 12 lb. of flour a week.
For 35 years he stuck to the backbreaking job until he was crushed to death in a cave in at the mine face. His son William, also a minor, was nearly killed trying to rescue him.

Another Family, Joseph Longworth and His wife Jane and their first two children, John and Ann also came out from Durham in England arriving in Sydney aboard the "Shackamaxon" on 3rd September 1863. Joseph was also a miner and settled in Newcastle.

The American Branch

Francis’ son Thomas, born ca 1692 and died in Newark in 1748, was the forefather of the prominent Cincinnati Longworths. Thomas’ son Thomas Longworth (1718-1790), was the king's regent in Newark and, when the American Revolution came, stayed loyal to the King. Not a good idea. All his property, valued at £2,230, was confiscated. Thomas fled to New York and changed his name to Longsworth, and returned to Newark after the war and lived out his life in poverty. Part of the family moved to Hartford, then went various ways. One son, David (ca 1765 - 9 Sept 1821) became Washington Irving's first publisher in NY. Another son or grandson went to South Carolina and became a storekeeper: one of his descendants emigrated to Iowa in the 19th century. Another son, Nicholas, worked for his brother Archibald as a clerk in his plantation store in St. Luke's Parish in Beaufort District in South Carolina, then moved to Cincinnati in 1803 to found the mighty Longworth clan of Cincinnati. He bought land, becoming one of the biggest landowners in America. He planted grapes on this land, finally striking gold in 1928, when his Catawba grapes were made into the first champagne ever produced in the US -- certainly the clans's crowning achievement. The night-life area of Cincinnati is still called Longworth, because it's built on one of old Nicholas' vineyards. The Cincinnati art museum is the old Longworth family mansion -- called now the Taft mansion, because the Tafts bought it from the Longworths. Nicholas' grandson, also named Nicholas, is the politician and violinist who became speaker of the House of Representatives and Alice Roosevelt's husband -- a story in itself. His sister Maria founded a music festival in Cincinnati that is still an ornament there. (There are biographies of both Nicolas II and Maria, the former by his sister Clara, who married into the Lafayette family in France.)

New York Gazette and Weekly Mercury, July 7, 1777
A Specimen of Rebel Humanity, experienced at Newark in New Jersey by the wives of Thomas Longworth, Isaac Longworth, Uzal Ward, and some others whose Husbands left that Place last January and took Refuge in this City. The Committee of Newark ordered the Wood to be cut off their Land, their Grass and Hay to be destroyed and their Persons insulted and they were not permitted to remain in the Province longer than Thursday the 26th ult. when Guards were placed round their Houses and their Effects secured by Order of their titular Governor William Livingston: to expostulate was needless as the Guards told the Women if they refused to obey, Violence would be used. The cries of Mothers, Children, and Slaves obliged to leave their Homes for differing in Sentiment from their Neighbors would have excited pity in the Breast of any but Savages. The Mandate must be obeyed. The Wife of Mr. Thomas Longworth having two young Children to take Care of was favored with a Straw Bed. They all arrived here last Sunday Week. (NJ Archives-newspaper abstracts)
NJ Biographical & Genealogical Notes Vol IX p 161 "Thomas Longworth, a leading member of Trinity Church, Newark, was also advertised as 'a fugitive now with the enemy' at the same time as Isaac, and his wife, Mary Bruen, and was deported from Newark in June 1777. He returned to Newark after the war, and died July 23rd, 1790 , aged 72 years. He was the father of David Longworth, who published the first New York directory in 1786 and was the grandfather of Nicholas Longworth, one of Cincinnati's prominent citizens for many years.----Collections NJ Hist Soc VI and Supplement passim; 1 NJ Archives XXII; Minutes Provincial Congress; Revolutionary Correspondence NJ Executive Sabine's loyalists, II,. 546--NJ Archives, 2d Series, page 419.

Ralph was the forefather of an extensive family in Australia.

If you wish you can contact me on brianlongworth.au@gmail.com

The information I have located fits the hand down history of our family. My Longworths came from Lancashire England. According to hand me down info there were three brothers on the Speedwell who landed in Virginia. There seems to be a family dispute caused each of the brothers to go different directions. The brother that is my ancestor is Francis Longworth. Lou Longworth, Franklin, Ohio rlongworth3@cinci.rr.com

John Longworth

I am looking for information on John Longworth. He was born in Tennessee about 1869. He married Charity Dulin (Doolin, etc) Lawson on Jan 1, 1890 in Knox County, KY. I know they had one son Eli Longworth Abt March 1893. I do not have any other information on John. He seems to have just disappeared into thin air. His wife and son appear on several census records for Knox County KY but I cannot find him. It is possible that he died before the 1900 census. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Cindy Scott

Re: Looking for lost Longworth relatives

My understanding is that there were two clusters of Longworths originally in England. One was somewhere to the South and the other was in Lancashire. As far as I can tell, it is generally accepted that the southern cluster died out as a family and that all Longworths in the UK and Ireland can trace their ancestry back to the Longworths of Lancashire.

This is also true of many Longworths in the USA, with one fundamental exception. As far as I know, the Longworths who married into the Roosevelt family cannot be traced into the Lancashire Longworths. I have seen several pieces of information which imply that the Roosevelt-Longworths originally had a different but similar surname (e.g. something like Langworthy) which gradually morphed into Longworth.

In Ohio, there are two clusters of Longworths. The ones in the South of the State are most likely to be relatives of the Roosevelt-Longworths, as this is where that family was based. The ones in the North are Lancashire-Longworths, having emigrated there in the 1850's. There are still quite a few families in and around the Stark county area who almost certainly are descendents of these Lancashire migrants.

In Lancashire, the Longworths were, for a long time, a prestigious family, owning large tracts of land, farms and a mill. The majority of the land was lost to a bad debt and their Manor House now lies under a reservoir. However, their history can still be seen in the names of the area, such as Longworth Moor, Longworth Clough (a wooded valley), and Longworth Road.
