Dear Padraig,

Thank you so much for your reply. My great-grandfather, Michael Looby was from Cam, Curry, County Roscommon. He was the son of Michael Looby/Luby and Winifred Corley. His siblings were: Bridget, Mary, Ellen, John, Margaret, Catherine, Winifred, and Thomas. All were baptised in Curry.

Winifred Corley married Michael Looby. She was the daughter of Matthew Corley and Mary Mee. Her baptism record was located in Ballybay Parish records, but no townland listed.

Michael Looby (my gg-grandfather) was the son of Thomas Looby and Ellen Dolan of Curry.

I hope that this helps you with your research.

Sincerely,
Bill

Re: Lawrence Looby

Hi Karen; I emailed this to you, but just incase your email has changed, I posted it here, also for others on the same search.

I don't have alot of information for you about Lawrence Looby. But I will share what I know.

My Great Grandfather was Charles August Ballman, he was orphaned in 1868 in Brooklyn New York. Lawrence Looby adopted him when he was about 5 or 6 years old. Lawrence owned a feed lot and raised cattle. Charles August Ballman had two blood sibblings, John and Mary. Mary married a gentleman with the last name of Ross, don't have a first name. They had several chidren, but I don't know all of them, and infact the only one I have is Frank. John Ballman was a painter and we think a police officer in New York and died in 1912.

Lawrences Looby's blood son, Charles L, married Lidia Coady.

How all this relates to me/you.

Charles August Ballman married Mary Ann Walsh. Mary Ann Walsh had several sibblings that came from Tinnascolly, The Rower, Kilkenny, Ireland. Mary Ann's sister, Ann Walsh married Tom Coady, they had several children... Eddy, Frank, Hurst, John, Katie, Lidia, Peter, and Tommy.

Another sibbling was Katherine Walsh, who married Mike Tiereny. They had children named John, Katherine, Steven and Tom. Mike Tiereny was killed in an auto accident with his daughter Katherine, when they were coming home from church.

And another sibbling Patrick Walsh born 1882 married Bridget __(I think it is Larky, not sure)____? don't know the last name.
Their children are...Cecilia, Katherine, Mary, Stephen and Leo. I only have a year of birth for Leo of 1909.

Leo Walsh owned a business in Elkhart, Illinois "Elkhart Oil Company" Leo was in business with Fenton Craner. The phone number from way back then was 3181 (that is short I know, but that really was the number)

I am presently trying to make some headway on this part of the tree, so if you find more information, I would appreciat it, if you would share. I have also connected with a professional genealogist that thinks he may be able to connect our COADY relatives to his, in which case he has traced his back to William the Conquor....so I will keep you informed on that.

Hope this helps with your search.

Kindest Regards,
Kaayla Canfield
We had cousins in Cashel and Dungarvin Most of the Ryans in the Cashel area were also related.

I'm not sure if there is a connection. I do have some information that you might be interested in. When we were in Ireland I met with some Loobeys in Cashel. There were two Looby families there at that time. Of this family there were three brothers. Two of which were named Thomas. They each spelled their last name different to be recognized/ One was Thomas Looby, another Thomas Loobey and the third was Richard Luby. So the spell difference, Cousin is a minor issue.

Hi, Hannah and Mike!

I have a Margaret Luby/Looby, born about 1800 most likely in Co. Tipperary. She married John Hickey, who was originally from Co. Limerick. They settled in Cashel, Co. Tipperary and had these children (possibly others also): Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth, and Laurence. Laurence Hickey immigrated from Liverpool to New Orleans in 1849 along with two supposed uncles, Edward and John Luby/Looby. Laurence eventually settled in St. Louis, MO where he married Catherine Hogan. They operated a basketmaking business. Would love to make some connections! Thanks!

Joni
LOOBY/LUBY Ireland to St. Louis, MO

My GG Grandfather, Peter LOOBY, was born in Ireland in 1840. He changed his surname spelling from LOOBY to LUBY, as indicated on his death record in St. Louis. His brother, William LOOBY (b. 1844), did NOT change the spelling of his name. They were in St. Louis, Missouri by around 1861. Peter was married to Elisabeth Bridget HEUSTON and William was married to Ellen SLATTERY. All of Peter & John's children were born in St. Louis. They might have had another relative, Michael LUBY/LOOBY. I have not done much searching in Ireland yet, but on a quick check, I do find a Peter, Michael, and William Looby/Luby in Tipperary in the Griffiths Valuation. If you have any connection to the LUBY/LOOBY families of St. Louis, please contact me.
