William Albert Looker (1848 - 1893)

Looking for information on the family line of William Albert Looker.

He died in Omaha, Nebraska on March 15, 1893 at the age of 45, according to the burial record, so it is estimated that he was born circa 1848. According to the 1900 Census he was born in Missouri, this information probably provided by his widow. His widow's name was Katherine (O'Brien) Looker and he had two children with her, Katherine (Looker) Thiebaut and Jeremiah Looker who later went by the surname of his stepfather, Costello.

I have only been able to find one census record that matches the birth date of 1848 and the birth location of Missouri for Looker. The 1850 census includes a William Albert along with a father, George H. Looker and a mother Mary. There is also a woman that might be the mother of Mary, Mary Fleming. There are two siblings of the William Albert listed, George and William.

I'm at a dead end with William Albert Looker and his line so any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have obtained information that Abial Hedden, grandfather of Edmund Burke Looker (his mother Phebe's father) died in 1841. Therefore he can't be the grandfather that died when Edmund was eleven years old as Edmund was born in 1811. We believe that Edmund Burke Looker's father, James was born in 1787 but we do not know when he died either. For some reason, Edmund was raised by his grandparents, we have that record but not the reason. Anyone who has more information on any of these topics, please contribute.

By the way, Lynford E. Looker is my father.

I will pull my notes and respond soon. If I recall correctly there are three or four Rev. War Lookers from the same general area as Union and Elizabeth New Jersey. It has been impossible to connect the Long Island NY and the New Jersey Looker family with the Mass. Loker or Looker family which many researchers do. I can locate no primary evidence, published record or even research that would support by weight of evidence logic those facts. Othneil is said to have mentioned that he was born in New York and his father was John. These are notes puplished in "Little Grandmother" written by Bernice McKee Stawnaker attributed to Othneil's daughter Pamela Phares. In the Sudbury, Mass Looker clan there is a possibility that a John Loker/Looker may have migrated from Mass. There is also a William Looker reflected on Long Island and later as a founder of Elizabeth, N.J., who married a Mary Higgins and had a son William (Jr.).

Do you have a listing of Othneils siblings and any dates relative to them from a documented source? If so would you share that information with me? I believe Othneil settled in Ohio between 1800 and 1805.

I have been working on the connections for ten years and have put it aside so many times because the documentation just isn't there. Have tried to get time to get to the New Jersey arch. but that has not worked out yet. Hopefully this spring.

The Looker/Loker name has been used interchangably so much and there are other variations possible that I don't trust the internet. Also it would be helpful to list individuals with given name first, followed by the surname and the birth and death year as (xxxx-xxxx). Some researchers as I have not discounted the possibility that there may have been a immigration directly into Long Island of this Looker family. The Loker/Looker family of Mass. could be independent and have been there since the mid 1600's. It is fair to say that that group has a lot of William, Henry and John surnames.

Do you have the Looker family in Virginia also? A fair number of the Ohio Lookers come from the that group.

Ed Looker Zell22@verizon.net

CORRECTION!
I misread a family tree printed out by my daughter. The birth date I gave on May 11, 2008 for James Looker who married Phebe Hedden was HER birth date, not his. Phebe Hedden was born May 15, 1791 and she died May 24, 1831. They were married November 5, 1807.
A member of our family who worked on genealogy listed three children of this couple in this order:
1. Charles
2. Margaret
3. Edmund Burke (our ancestor)
She did not say how she knew this, but she was a grand daughter of Edmund Burke Looker's oldest son, Charles Burke Looker. He was born November 11, 1834.

There was an account of an airplane accident that took the life of James Edmund Looker. The accident happened in 1968 and the plane crashed into Lake Michigan. We do not know what Looker line he was related to. We would like to know in case there is a connection with our line of Lookers. We have an ancestor James Looker and his son was Edmund Burke Looker born in 1811 in New York City.

Edmund Burke Looker was born in New York City in 1811 to James Burke Looker and Phebe Hedden (who had been married in Essex Co., NJ). We do not know where James was born. We do believe there were family members in New York City that Edmund visited later in his life. I am a descendant of Edmund's son Skyles.

thank you for your messages. Isaac Halsey Looker was born after my ancestor Edmund Burke Looker was born in 1811, so he isn't the person I'm looking for. Please name any other sons Nathaniel had besides your ancestor, David. We are trying to find the ancestor before Edmund's father, James and we don't know when James was born. Maybe he was 20 when Edmund was born, or he could have been much older. It depends on how fast the generations were turning. It seems like Nathaniel could be our ancestor. Please name Nathaniel's children and give any dates you have for Nathaniel from your family tree and also any dates for his sons here. Perhaps someone will see this message and help us put the pieces of this puzzle together. Thanks again.

I should have given you a few more generations and a few more details I think.

I believe Charles W. Looker was Charles Wesley Looker. I have two earlier generations to give you since we have some of the same ancestors on the Looker side:

Charles W. Looker who married Geneva "Neva" E. Weeden, was the son of Charles Burke Looker, b. 11 Nov. 1834 and d. 18 Apr 1905 and Marietta Towne, ba about 1839 and died about 20 Jun 1915. They were married 6 Jan 1856, possibly in Ohio. They are both buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Bloom Township, Richland County, Wisconsin.

Charles Burke Looker was the eldest son of Edmund Burke Looker, born 13 Feb 1811, New York, NY, d. 18 Jul 1896 and Martha Russell, b 1811, maybe in Pennsylvania. She d. 27 Jan 1860 in Ohio. They were married in Cumberland County, PA.

Edmund is buried in the same cemetery his son and wife are buried in, listed above. Martha was buried in Pennsylvania I think, even though she died possibly in Gotham Township, Fulton Co., Ohio when she was 49.

Edmund Burke Looker was the son of James Looker and Phebe Hedden. We believe James was born in about 1787. Phebe was born 15 May 1791 and d. 24 May 1831. They were married 5 Nov. 1807, Essex Co., NJ.

James could have been born in New York City or Long Island, NY. We haven't been able to connect him to any others. It was stated in Edmund's obituary that he was raised by his grandparents but we don't know which grandparents. Phebe Hedden was the daughter of Abiel Hedden, b. 7/11/1767 and Betsey Sayre (widow of Rev. Soldier Sam Sayre). Betsey was nee Elizabeth Hedden, a first cousin. They had 12 children.
Lillian,

Nathanial's grandchildren wouldd be my ggrandfather's generation. Sorry, there's no James or Phebe Hedden. I have Nathaniel's children, but very little else. On of his sons was David Brown Looker, my ggg grandfather. Of course he still could be a grandson of Nat'l, but I don't have Edmund, or James or Phebe.

Othniel was Gov of Ohio--I've been to his home--if I only could remember what town that was. They have a "Looker Day." He did marry Pamela Clark and had a lot of children--don't remember if there were 10 or not. Othniel's records are all over Ancestry.com.

I'm interested in Nathaniel, a Rev. soldier to which you refer. Who in the world was his Father? Old handwritten notes suggest William, but non of the Williams fit--don't think he was a brother of Othniel--Othniel's siblings are also listed--no Nathaniel. Maybe they are cousins or something--they were in the same unit in the Rev. War.

Gail Looker McKenna

Nath. m. Hannah Baldwin in Connecticut Frms Pres. Church (Union, NJ) but the British burned all the records. Hannah applied and received a pension from the gov't. and his children's names are listed--so I think he was born around 1750. They lived in Essex Co., NJ, but that is a huge area

I am Lillian's daughter (see previous postings) and thought I'd chime in and encourage any of you with male relatives carrying the Looker or Luker name to get their DNA tested before it's too late. It's a simple cheek swab. We did this about two years ago, using FamilyTree DNA and a 37 marker test. If all 37 markers match, this test confirms a common male ancestor within the last 5 generations, 50% of the time, or within 16 generations, 90% of the time. To see our Looker/Luker surname project page, and get group rates on testing, go here:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/looker/

To join and test, go here:

https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=H59509&...
