Re: Loomis Gang Homestead in Sangerfield, NY

The book, "The Loomis Gang" by George W. Walter, Prospect Books, Prospect, NY, 1953, Library of Congress Catalog Card # 53-7852, Printed by American Book, Stratford Press, Inc, New York, tells about the location of the homestead, has pictures of the home which is no longer standing, and gives a map of the area. I have toured that area but I'm not familiar with it. You could contact the Waterville, NY, Historical Society, I suspect, for further information. The map from the book by Walter shows the farm to be south of Sangerfield or north of North Brookfield, NY. When I visited I took a photo of the Nine Mile Swamp area. My picture shows Loomis Road and Mason (not certain if it's a St., Rd. or Ave.) intersection. I believe they have an annual festival at Waterville celebrating the Loomis Gang. You can also go online to get additional information.
Good luck.

Alexander Melvin Campbel of Salina, Kansas

I just linked up two Loomis lines and I think that is kinda neat. Sisters Mary Campbell and Christina A Campbell, daughters of Alexander Melvin and Christine Phillips both married Nelson Henry Loomis 28 Jun 1862.

On the other side, the Hull history had George Merwin Hull 22 Jul 1863 married to Margaret Campbell 4 Aug 1866 Salina, Ks daughter of Alexander M Campbell. 1880 census confirms her as a sister to Mary and Christina.

Its funny to think of those two brothers in law getting together perhaps at family gatherings and never suspecting that they are 7th cousins.

Actually it is Helen M Loomis LOWE wife of C Herbert Lowe 1897 - 1998.

Near as I can tell they are in the 1930 census in Indianapolis and in Elk Springs, Warren, Kentucky in 1920. From 1930 I find Herbert 33 Ky and Helen M 18 Ky and children Dorothy 1922, James 1923 and Calvin 1925 Indiana.

The cemetery pictures also have an Aaron D Lowe 1921 - 2007, but I cannot find him in the 1930 census.

I cannot find a Helen Loomis in the 1910 census in Kentucky. One that fits for age is Helen Marion Loomis 24 Jun 1901 of Watertown, NY, but that's NY and not Ky.

I am trying to find information about my gr-gr-great grandfather Thomas Albert Loomis/Lomas who was born in England on Nov 11 1830. His suspected birthplace is in Bury, Lancashire. Sometime prior to 1864 he relocated to Busti, NY, USA where he married my gr-gr-great grandmother, Alba Stevens. Since he was 34 by this time, he may have had a previous wife. His was the last generation to use the Lomas name, all other generations after his took the Loomis spelling of the name. I do have a photograph of him posted on my public family tree if it helps. I would appreciate any help offered.

This is one of your Newbury cousins. My grandmother was Bessie Newbury Fenn, daughter of Howard Newbury, Alice Newbury Loomis's brother. I have done a lot of work on the Newbury side - It's in the database at the Windsor , CT Historical Society as Newbury men married Windsor women from the start of the Windsor colony up to the marriage of Joseph Allen Newbury and Paulina Wilcox. I have joined the DAR thru my grandmother and have one supplemental just approved and two more already down in Washington. Our Newbury ancestors married women who had Loomis as maiden names, so your Loomis ancestry is also thru Alice Newbury.

Kyle, even a little more information would help here. What year was your father born? Probably after 1930, which would make census information not helpful. Your best bet would be a birth certificate for your father, or a marriage license which would be available in the county where he was born or married.

I'm searching for the ancestry of my gr gr grandfather, William Loomis, who was born about 1800-1805 in NY. He married in NY, moved west, and his first wife died. (Or maybe his first wife died and then he moved west.) I believe he had a daughter by the first wife, named Mary M. Loomis. He was in Hancock County, IL from the mid to late 1830's through 1851. He married Elvira Van Tassel and they had three children. Elvira died in 1850 and William married Lucinda Gearhard. It appears William and Lucinda died in about 1853-54. His descendants from his marriage to Elvira moved to Iowa when grown. If you have a William Loomis in your family tree who might match this profile, please contact me. Thank you so much.

I do not have information concerning William Fisk Loomis, however, I would like to correspond with his descendants. My gr gr grandfather, William Loomis, was born in New York in about 1804-1805. He moved on west to IL. I can't connect him to his ancestors but have wondered if he might be the third son of Josiah Loomis and Jane Craig Loomis. William Fisk is a descendant of Josiah, b. 1802, I believe. Please get in touch if you have any information regarding Wilbur's ancestors.
Thank you for your assistance.
Jeanette Loomis Hagan

Thanks for your reponse, however, your William Henry doesn't seem to fit my ancestor's age or location, I'm afraid. My ancestor would go back another generation or two and he was born in New York, according to the 1850 US Census. I really appreciate that you checked into your branch of the Loomis family tree. Do you know your Loomis heritage? Does it go back to the original Joseph Loomis who came to America in 1638? I have the Loomis Family in America, Loomis genealogy and would be glad to check your ancestor in that source if you need information.

With the help of others, as well as my own research, I would like to "state my case" concerning the family of Hartman Loomis. The revised Loomis genealogy lists William Hartman Loomis b abt 1776. I believe this is actually Hartman Loomis whose birth or baptisim 30 Jul 1784 is recorded in Schoharie, NY church records with parents listed as Job (a.k.a. Joseph) and Sarah. I do not have a copy of the record. All census listings for Hartman appear to confirm the year 1784 for his birth, rather than 1776 and never is he listed as William Hartman. I have information concerning Hartman & Mary Amanda (Wiltse) Loomis' descendants & am interested in making contact with anyone researching these lines. My connection to this family is through Annaka (a.k.a. Anna) who was a sister of Hartman. Annaka's birth is recorded in the church records of Schaghticoke, NY and I do have a copy of that record. Annaka married Gardner Smith (s/o Reuben Smith) from Onondaga Co, NY & removed in the early 1830's to MI. I would like to add to, and share, my information concerning any connection to the family of Job & Sarah (Van Deusen) as well as the parents of Job who were Jacob Loomis b 1720 and Dolly Hartman. Thank you, very much & good luck with your searches!
