Hello,

I'm a Looney in Worcester, MA. I'm told that we are only related to O'Looney's. Does anyone know of any O'Looney's in County Clare or County Cork?

There are other Looney families in our area, but we aren't related to any that I know of.

I'm interested in finding any information, as I am planning on traveling to Ireland soon.

I have traced Benjamin F Jr and Naomi parents of Fronia. I am certain they are her parents. I have been able to trace Benjamin Jr pretty much from birth to grave. I am now working on Benjamin Sr but so far have not been able to find his parents. I did gather info from Benjamin Jr's deth certificate that his mother's maiden name was Clingingsmith. So Benjamin Sr was married to Catherine Clingingsmith who was born in Stroder Community, Cape Girardeau County MO.

Benjamin Sr was born in Tennessee around 1823.

my tree on ancestry is Gary Don Fann family tree.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12755303/recent?pg=42

my personal email is gfann002@charter.net

Sandra F

I have a possibility, but not a definite. I have (off an unsourced tree with no proofs) a Benjamin Franklin LOONEY6, b.1872 Rusk, Cherokee, TX. d. 1931 Son of Quinn5 Cleveland LOONEY and Susan WHERRY. Quinn5 is the son of Joseph4 and Martha MCNEIL LOONEY (Joseph4 is brother to my husband's Noah4 which is where I come in). Joseph4 is the son of Robert3 and Mary Elizabeth QUINN LOONEY. Robert3 s/o Adam2 s/o Robert1 the emigrant. I had started tracing Noah4 Looney's siblings, but had not gotten very far on Joseph4's lines. I have Joseph4 on the 1850 Census (Chreokee, TX) and Quinn5 on the 1860 Census (Cherokee, TX)--the only real documentation I have. I'd love to know more. Some of these lines did end up in MO and AR as well as TX.
Teresa
soheyrazar@comcast.net

Another Looney

I knew my husband's grandmother's maiden name was Looney. Her name was Fornia Eveline Looney Pulliam. I had one picture of her parents taken from a distance. On the back it said, "Your great grandparents. Looneys" No other names.

My sister in law recenly sent me some old pictures on the back of one of an elderly lady it says. "Neoma Jane Cole Looney".

In the 1900 census I find Benjamin F Looney age 38 in the same house as Jane Looney age 36 and Frona age 14 and a Catherine age 64. The 1910 census shows a Naomi J and Benjanmin F and Iona (must have been Fronia) living in the same town in Missouri

Assuming Catherine is the widowed mother of Benjamin F, I search and find an 1880 census with a Benj F Looney married to a Catherine and many children. included is a Benj F Looney age 19.

I know Fronia, my husband's grandmother lived in and around Southeast MO all of her life.

Any help would be appreciated

Sandra F

US Army Air Force PVT. Robert L. Looney

I'm trying to find living next of kin of the late Army Air Force PVT Robert L. Looney. PVT Looney was the radio operator on a C-87 transport aircraft, when it disappeared on a flight between India and China, on April 9, 1943. His army enlistment record states that he was a resident of Lancaster County, Nebraska when he enlisted on May 17, 1941 and that his year of birth was 1922. It also states that he was born in Tennessee. He was declared missing in action and presumed dead. On October 16, 2008, the wreckage of his aircraft was finally found in a remote region of northeast India.

I was researching the Love and Twomey families. I found a tree that contained Love, Twomey and Looney families but I could not display the register report. I then found this 2001 post. Why do you list the name Looney and put Twomey in ()? My great grandmother was Looney Etta Love (1879 - 1956) and she married Marion Smith Twomey (1874 - 1969). She was then Looney Twomey. They lived in Tennessee. I don't have much information since I have just started on this part of my tree. I have found this very confusing.

Hello Patricia Looney. I am the grandson of Robert Joesph Looney, brother of Galley and son of Ibby Jane or Elizabeth Jane Hatfield. If you want to get in touch with my aunt that is still living and can give you information about the same people you are researching, please let me know. Her name is Monnie Looney Wilson, 85 years young and she lives in Texas. She is the #2 daughter of Robert, my Mother, Rachel, was the first (who just passed last week at 93). Also, she may have some information about the Looney family from her sister-in-law, Sally, that dates back 20 or 30 years ago. I have a copy if I can find it. She traced the linage all the way back to the Isle of Man and passage on the one of the ships that crossed with the Mayflower. Have you been to any of the Looney family reunions that are held in July in Leemaster VA? I met some of Galley's children there two or three years ago but I can't remember if you were one of them.
My Grandfather said his mother, Ibby Jane, escaped a raid by the McCoys, ended up in Virginia, changed her name to Murphy (she was living with a family named Murphy) so the McCoys could not find her. He told me this before he died. I also have pictures of Ibby Jane with my Grandfather and his family.

Re: Looney: indigeous to Ireland or Ise of Man ?

Both Looney and Lewney are derivations from the original Gaelic. From "Surnames of the Manks" [sic] by Leslie Quilliam:
Mac Giolla Dhomnaigh--meaning the Lord's servant First reference found 1498 "MacGillowny" and later "Lowney" 1640. Other spellings of the name came later. Lewney first is found in 1623 and Looney in 1644. Of course they could have been used earlier--that is just the first record found at the time of the book's printing in 1996. Around that time Lewney and Looney became separate families and both names now exist on Man. There are graves on Man and even in Maughold dating from the 1600s in both names. Spelling did not start to standardize anywhere until the 1700s.

Looney is also an Irish name with probably a totally different derivation, since it is from Western Ireland. Looneys and O'looneys are also from different areas of Ireland.

As for "German" migration to Man, Manx are Celts and the Celts did come to Britain possibly several thousand years BC out of Europe from the German area. Manx also were invaded by the Norse around 500 AD so there is a strong Norse bloodline there as well. However recent mtDNA (maternal) indicates that the original settlers of the British Isles may have been there more like 10,000 years and those blood lines would also be in the Manx.

Teresa

I am researching the Dee Witt C. and Mary L. (Steele) Looney's family. One of their children was Ernest Ray Looney, b. June 26, 1906, died Oct. 7, 1969, Burley, Cassia, Idaho. He married Annabelle (d/o Ellis Lafayette and Bessie Melinda Farmer Barnhart) Sept 4, 1934 in Mound Valley, Kansas. I have obits and marriage information on Dee Witt and Mary, also other children,Iva May, Alvin Cecil, Sylva Georgia Marie, Elsie, Emmett, Eunice, Zoma L, Zelma O. I have Annabelle's obit. I am willing to share the information that I have, would like to have more information on Ernest's family as I don't have his obit. Mary Steele was on my grandmother's side of the family.
Pat

John Looney in Carroll Co., TN

John Looney, b. 1817 in KY, is found on the 1850-1860 Carroll Co., TN census with wife Nancy Adaline, b. 1821 NC. Many databases on the web have Nancy Adaline's maiden name as Ferguson. I would like to know if anyone has any proof of her maiden name.

I descend from William Bland, son of Jason and Nancy Bland, living in Carroll Co.,TN during the same time period. William had a sister named Nancy Adaline and the oral tradition in our line is that she was married to a Looney. It has been proven that John Looney's mother, Susannah Williams, remarried to a 'Fergus' after the death of his father, Robert in the 1820s in Cumberland Co., KY. I'm wondering if this could be the reason that Nancy Adaline's maiden name has been 'assumed' to be Ferguson. Susanna Fergus, 66, (John's mother) is living in their household in 1850 in Carroll Co., TN. Did someone decide that she must be Nancy Adaline's mother by mistake? Or, is there documented proof that her maiden name was Ferguson? Would love to know so I can prove or disprove this Nancy Adaline as my aunt, Nancy Adaline Bland, b. NC, to Jason and Nancy Bland.
Karen
Klawss@mac.com

The tree is titled "Peter Moser 2" and the tree identifies her father Absalom Looney as having the middle name of "Jesse". The tree belongs to "pmoser6297" who lists Shasta Lake CA as their home. I messaged and asked them about the middle name Jesse, but do not have a response yet.

You might try doing a general search on the name "Absalom Jesse Looney" and see if it comes up under the family tree grouping.

Having seen the death certificate, I'm sure you will find that this is the same Susan Caroline Looney that you originally spoke of. Grandchildren, or wives of grandchildren as in this situation, frequently don't know the "real" given names of their grandparents. Mrs. Joe Brown gave the information on the death certificate.

With the aid of a family tree located on Ancestry.com I found information that indicates your Carolyn Looney married 1. James H. Brown 2. Willis L. Kilgore. There is a Texas Death Certificate for her in Harris County, TX that says she died July 22, 1951 in Houston, TX. Her father is shown to be Abner Looney and her mother as Martha Jane ??
Informat was Mrs. Joe W. Brown. Information shown on Death Certificates comes from individuals who are in a distressed state of mind so some information may be somewhat incorrect. Her burial was in Forest Park Cemetery, Houston.

Thank you for the info. Susan Caroline Looney married William Franklin Brown, not James Brown. This is the one I was looking for. She was the mother of my husbands grandfather. Her 2 sons were Eugene and Joe Brown. After she divorced William Brown, we were not sure were she went. I will check on her death certificate and other info to make sure it is correct!
Thanks again,
Ann

Thanks again for your help. A friend is a big genelogy researcher and I received a copy of Susan's death certificate from him. He also tells me that Forest Park has over 100,000 burials and is a private cemetery. Getting any information from them would be difficult.
I don't know the middle name of Absalom but will try and find out more, if I can.
Thanks,
Ann
