Kelly, have you seen this? It mentions a grandson, John born in 1808. Another Lorah who is my guru thinks that my (and your?) Henry might be of George and Maria Lorah decent. Possibly, this first George could have sired George (see below)AND Henry who was born between 1770-1780. This Henry had David and possibly your John--the mentioned grandson. It's something to look into, don't you think?

http://www.lorah.com/genfiles/lorah/grpsheets/notes.htm

The earliest Lorah known to have lived in this part of the country was John Lowr, who came from France with a group of 231 Palatines on the ship Townshead, which docked at Philadelphia on October 5, 1737. John Lowra settled in the Oley Valley of Berks County. The present writer knows nothing more about him. He had a son George Lorah, b. 3/15/1743, d 10/06/1822, who is buried in the Reamstown Cemetery, (Row 9). George was a Revolutionary war soldier who served in Daniel Reiff's Company of East Oley Berks County, 1777. Just who George's wife was or where she is buried we do not know. She may easily hae been buried with him, but we have no record or no stone to give us any proof of the statement. We know from the Baptism record of his grandson John in 1808, that George and Maria Lorah stood as sponsor. Thus we conclude that Maria was his wife's name.

George and Maria Lorah had a son George Lorah, b. 2/28/1785 d. 8/19/1850, [lowra.FTW]

George and Maria Lorah had a son George Lorah, b. 2/28/1785 d. 8/19/1850,

My GGGRdparents were boene in Oriente province, Cuba. My last known ancestor was in that province in 1819. From there I do not kbow were they came from. They could have migrated from Domincan Rep. when a great exodus of land cultivators migrated to Oriente, Cuba when France took over. I correspond with Myrna Lora from Canada If you want I can give you her email. Last I knew, she had hired a professional genealogist.
Sylvia Lora
lorabet@comcast.net

Hi. I have been in contact with Joanne Lorah who has done considerable research on the Lorahs. Several of us were involved in a DNA project http://www.familytreedna.com/, that involved males with the Lorah/Lorow/Lora/etc. name. My second cousin who I met on a message board, had his 2 1st cousins with the Lorah name get tested. They did the 37 marker test. http://www.familytreedna.com/faq2.html#table1 I have e-mailed Jerry in the past and he had a lot of info that fits me but just doesn't know if John is David Lorah's brother. Maybe a DNA test would be a good idea. Joanne had sent me lots of info but none proven. Too many Georges and Henrys out there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I could send some theries but that is all they are.

They changed the spelling numerous times but my branch settled on Lorow.

Did you find anything else out about them? My cousin Jerry has information on some property Henry deeded.

Charlene,
My GGGF was in Cuba, Province of Oriente, in 1819. I have not been able to find out where he xame from but have great suspition to beleive they came from Dominican Republic, In the XVIII th. century there was a great inmigration from Dominica to Orinte in Cuba. So far I have not been able to locate my ancestors. Please keep in touch it might be that we came from Italy. I was in Italy in 2004 and brought back a bottle of driking water with the Lora name on it. It was bottled in Milan, italy.
Hello my name is Charlene Lora I live in New jersey I got the last name from grandfather who was once connected to my late grandmother. they are both from the dominican republic. I dont know much about the lora family I just know that they came from Italy and migrated to The Dominican Republic. I just wanted to know if in someway we are connected. Lora is not a very common last name its really rare so Im sure we are probably related in some way.

Rudy and Giovanna Lora

How are you all? I haven't communicated with anyone since last year. In reading over all the messages left on the message board, I find that Rudy Lora and Giovanna Lora are the only two people from Italy that have left messages on the network. All the others appear to be of Latino heritage from various parts of the U.S.and Canada. You mentioned,Rudy, that your family is from Venice. My family, that is my father and his entire family originated in a town called Novale in the Province of Vicenza and District of Valdagno. These areas are just north of Venice or in the suburbs of Venice. He came to the U.S. in 1907 with his brothers and were followed by his parents (my grandparents) in 1911 and settled in Woonsocket, R.I. My fathers full name was Alfredo Girolamo Lora. His parents names were Daniela and Antonio Lora. My father had two brothers named Antonio and Arthur. I could tell you more but I don't think it would help you any further. If any of this information is of any help to you, let me know. Since both my parents died many years ago, and I don't have any more relatives in Italy, I cannot get any more information with greater detail. Rudy, if you have any relatives still living, can you get any information from your family or anyone else? Giovanna; If you think we have a connection here and can obtain more information, please communicate with me also.
Hope to hear from you soon. Regards to you both. Al. Lora

Lora/Lorah/Loreau etc

My branch of Lorahs originated in France with a date of the 8 or 9 hundreds as proven residents. At this time one family moved into what was later Austria/Germany, was enobled and intermarried with other nobility. This is recorded in the Huguenot Archives. About mid 1500 some French citizens left the Catholic Church--hence Huguenots--were persecuted, massacred, enslaved but many immigrated into Germany then America as did my branch in the 1600s. I have recently heard of others who made their way into Spain--
but I suspect many of you are of Catholic Faith. This only means that a fairly short migration may have taken place from France into Italy--perhaps through one of many soldiers sent there in the endless land battles--the same with Spain. I am very interested in these paths! If any of you have anymore nsight into this please let me know.
Also, I was sent a coat of arms with the name from which Lora was taken--in Spanish--if anyone knows what I am referring to and can fill me in on the Spanish meaning of Lora--and the Italian, I'd appreaciate your help. In French Loreau/Loreaux is thought to refer to a leather strap such as on a horse or on a sandle.
I visit this site on rare occasion to see if anything new is happening--please feel free to contact me at JoLora@aol.com

Kelly,
You say that your family came from Mexico, but don't know who they were. I was born near Pachuca, Mexico, it the capitol of Hidalgo. a state north of Mexico city. The city is a mining center and has attracted many europeans. From what i know there used to be people of German and English heritage.
There might also be a good chance that people of Italian heritage migrated here.

Hi Giovanna,

Thanks for the message. My uncle Antonio died 20 years ago. My entire family, i.e. Girolamo, (father), Antonio, (uncle), Azuride, (Aunt) Giovanna, (aunt), Addone, (uncle) and Adele, (aunt). Mother Amalia, (grandmother), came over with the above family in June 10, 1907. I don't know when my grandfather came over. I can't seem to find a record of his arrival.
So you can see, my family goes back some years when they arrived to this country. As far as I know, there are no longer any Lora's left in Vicenza that I am aware of. There may be some cousins left or some long lost relatives but no one I would be familar with.
I don't know if this information is of any use to you but I thought I would give you all of the data I can.

Best Regards,

Al.
dear Sylvia
it's been a long time since I was on this site
good to see you are still searching for roots too.
I have tried to locate Lorah dept store in Florence on the internet with no results. this really intrigues me! Would you contact me and remind me of who and what you are searching for.
I have made some headway on finding the actual town in Germany one of our branches of Lorah lived in before coming to America. I had concluded before that our French branch settled in Hesse Germany--this town is located there.
We have begun a DNA seach on Family Tree DNA and are seeking any and all male Lorahs retaining the last name or spelling variations thereof: Lorah, Lorrah, Lorah, Lohra, etc. In fact we have one Lowery who matches the Berks Co. PA Lorahs perfectly.
Anyone interested in participating please contact me or go directly to the site and look for the Lorah information.
My family branch doesn't match exactly so we are still callling for participants
Joanne Lorah
jolorah@verizon.net

You are probably part of this large clan! We go back to France circa 1650--when many of this family left during the Huguenot Persecutions-- those who remained Catholic stayed in France/Europe so yours may have been part of this group. There was/may still be a Lora who was enobled in Austria long before the Persecutions.
I have corresponded with several European Loreaux--some whose family settled in Loreauxville Louisianna--I have to check my records to see if they were in Canada before moving to to the US.
Do you have grandparent's names, etc-dates other than the immigration date? How old are you--what do you do--I'd love to check out common characterristics--I'm an artist and have found a number of writers, musicians, film/tv people-- very creative people as well as some extra ordinary scientists and math experts--
pleased to meet you--welcome to our large and varied family!
Joanne
