Hi Charles. I'm Charles Jones. My mother's mother (my Grandmother) was a Loraine (possibly spelled Lorraine) but we have so little information about her family, we really aren't sure. What we know (but have no documents to confirm) is her name which was Mary (maybe Marie) Monzell Loraine and was called Zella. She married Charles Tavenor VanMeter in 1912. He died in 1921 and Mary died in 1928. We believe she was born in Ohio and the family lived around Little Hocking Ohio at the time of her death. We believe there may have been some relatives in the Warren Ohio area, but not confirmed. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. Not much out there about the Lorain Family.

Hi Charles,

do you have a family tree online yet, or names of your Grandparents so that we can check if we are related? Do ou know when your family emigrated and from where (I am assuming you are either in the US or Canada)? My mother's family are Loraines from County Durham in the UK, perhaps there is some connection? You should be able to have a look at my tree and see if anyone looks familiar.

Kind regards,
Loraine

Hiya Loraine...

Good hear from you!!! I have already got the marriage certificate of David Musk and Mary Ann Patterson, married on 24th April 1881 at The Parish Church in the Parish of St. Mark Millfield in the County of Durham, David is a Mariner but nothing say on marriage certiicate what their mother's names. I understand your grandfather Dennis won't talk about his father just same with my grandpa Jack won't talk about his family but Nana Rita been telling me brief when I was teenager saying Grandpa Jack had a very hard life and been at the Sea all his life but too young for me to understand but I didn't get a change to ask my mam. My personal email address is pbruce4@btinternet.com.

It is wonderful to hear from you. I email with your dad and although he does answer some questions he does not answer others. He is the only uncle I have who sends cards and emails - he's great! Aunt Pat was wonderful and I regret finding them too late in my life and not having had the time to meet her. John ThomasLoraine died quite young in a shipyard accident. I understand that he was shipwrecked and his friends died. He was apparently floating at sea for some time and my mom says he was not the same after that. He is buried under oldest son David in Bishopwearmouth Cemetry with no headstone - we tried to find him and read the death records. I could not find the grave of Deborah Musk. There's lots to talk about so keep in touch. My email is McCracken@bellnet.ca and I look forward to hearing more about you. Where in Australia do you live?

On the birth registry documents in Sunderland I found records of most of the Loraine births but could not find Mary. My Dad was the 2nd one and there was quite an age difference between him and Dennis. My dad was in WW2 and was a nasty adulterous alcoholic - Dennis appears to be the opposite and you should be proud to have him as an acestor. I've heard mixed messages about John Thomas - some say he was abusive but mostly I think he came home from sea, made their mother preganant and left again until the disaster and later the death. I don't know if Uncle Dennis will confirm that.

Have a great day!
Cheers
Trish
Hiya!

It's Loraine here (Pat & Dennis Loraine's granddaughter), still working on the tree from the work that Grandmutt started. I found this post and thought I might be able to add some detail that I have just found! I have just this minute ordered the marriage certificate for David Musk and Mary Ann Patterson. It took me ages to find the correct document, because Grandmutt had Paterson with only one S. I should have the certificate in about a week, which I will scan and add to my tree (Loraine & Kiely family tree), but if you are interested, the details are: District: Sunderland, Volume 10a, page 705, registered in Q2 1881. I cross checked it by looking up the marriage separately for both David and Mary Ann, and they both match this record. I am always adding what I can to my tree (though I tend to go off on different branches when I hit a dead end, and then come back to it later), but I am unable to ask Grandmutt since she died, and Grandpa won't talk about it, because he gets very upset talking about his father. I have various copies of certificates (birth and death) , but need to get a scanner organised so that I can add them on to my tree. I'd love to hear from either/both of you - it can be hard going trying to research from this far away! NExt trip back to the UK is going to be research oriented! My email is lorainek@hotkey.net.au - please let me know if you want me to send you copies of certificates, etc.
Kindest regards,
Loraine

Also not sure if Lydia Loraine bown in Dec 1840 and died in March 1916 age 75 but I am trying to find out who is her husband?

It seems that Deborah Musk was born December 9th, 1891 to David and Mary Ann Musk who lived at 38 Westbury St, Sunderland. Her sister Jenny married Smith and had one son David. Her sister Carrie married a Davidson. There are several brothers and sisters I can't locate. If there is someone linked to this data please contact me at STRS@bellnet.ca please.

Hi Kenny, perhaps I can give you more details about my family side to see if it related to yours? My grandfather is John Thomas Loraine, his parents are John Thomas & Deborah Loraine nee Musk. They had 9 children, David Musk, Samuel Musk, John Thomas (my grandfather), Mary Ann Paterson, James Paterson, Dennis, William Musk, Leonard and Maurice, their surname are Loraine. John and Deborah married around 1913. Does this link to yours or do you need further details? I do not have Deborah's family side's details.

Pam x

Hello Pauline
Very glad to hear from you. Unfortunately I know extremely little about this man except that he served in the Boer War, not in the City of London Yeomanry but joined them 30 Dec 1901. Regimental no 425. Was a sergeant by 1906 when he was listed as a Committee Member at a Regimental Concert. Part of the above info comes from CLY Museum who know nothing else.
My grandfather ,Andrew Crawshaw, was a sergeant in the 6th Dragoon Guards during the Boer Wae. His life was allegedly saved by a Loraine and the name was given as a second one to my father and a third one to myself. Our daughter bears it as Lorraine as a third one also. After the Boer War, Andrew was seconded to CLY and eventually became their RSM in 1914 - 18. He was Vice Chairman of Concert Committee.
All my efforts to find my man have been unsuccessful; a researcher could not find him at PRO.
Would therefore be very glad to hear any news you may have, particularly if the initials coincide.
Please contact on crawshawja@aol.com

Regards
John
Oundle

I am the daughter of Samuel Musk Loraine and the granddaughter of John Thomas Loraine. John Thomas is buried at Bishop Weirmouth Cemetery in Sunderland in an unmarked grave with his son David. My dad was born in Middleton-on-Teesdale and his Aunt, Jenny Smith, used to run a bakery there. I have a cousin David Smith, Jenny's son. There were many Musk chidren but the three youngest sisters were in Sunderland area - Carrie, Jenny and my grandmother Deborah. Is anyone out there related. Does anyone know the family links for Sir Percy Loraine and his father, Sir Lambton Loraine, both of whom have made extensive contributions to world history.

I am unsure as to whether he joined the Yeomanry between his return and his becoming an actor, but if you think this is the man you are loooking for please contact me as I am researching him and any info you have may also help me
