Thursday Lorton, b.abt 1819, dau of Robert & Sarah Lorton, of Greene Co., IL

I have a professionally made copy of a photograph of Thursday Lorton as “Thurs Dixon – mother of Mrs. Lawrence Tonkersly – Aunt of Oscar Lorton”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. She looks to be about age 60 in the photo.

In “Illinois Marriages 1851-1900”, I found Thursday Lorton married John Dixon on 18 Jun 1856 in Greene Co., IL. In the 1850 census for Greene Co., “Thurssey” Lorton, age 32, was daughter of Robert & Sarah Lorton. WorldFamilyTree shows “Thursey” Lorton was married twice – first in Jul 1846 in Greene Co., IL to Lewis Stubblefield, and had children Mariah & Calvin and they lived Christian Co., IL. Second she was married to John Dixon, and I found “Thursey” Dickson in 1880 Christian Co., IL census, age 61, with Almyriah J., age 20 and Laura E., age 17.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Thursday or Thursey Lorton.

Oliver Lorton, b.1854, son of James & Anna, lived Macoupin Co., IL

I have a professionally made copy of a photograph of “Oliver Lorton, cousin of Oscar”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1880 or thereabouts, and he looks to be about mid 20s. I have another Lorton photo of Thursday Lorton Dixon, the “aunt of Oscar Lorton” – and the Lorton families lived in Greene Co., IL and Macoupin Co., IL. I found an Oliver Lorton in the 1900 census for Macoupin Co., IL, with birthdate of May 1854. Macoupin Co. is where he lived in 1870 with his parents, James and Anna.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Oliver Lorton.

I know its been a couple of years that you had inquiries regarding Charles Lorton of Medford, Oregon. I was living in Medford at that time, saw the article in the Medford Mail Tribune regarding Charles Lorton. My Mother was the daughter of Charles Lorton in Missouri, I gave the article to her, she did go to see him, and had a nice visit with him. This would have been probably in the late 70's or possibly the early 70's . I think you might be able to read the article on line, if your interested, I think he was almost a 100 at that time...........Nita

I have copies of both Robert Lorton/ Tabitha Gannaway and Thomas Lorton and Elizabeth Moss marriage records. Thomas b. 1724 VA had the following children: 1. Martha marr Robert Ferguson 2. Thomas Jr. marr a Polly Dickenson (my line). 3. Robert b. 15 feb 1747 (your line) 4. Rebecca Lorton who marr Hugh Crockett and Sarah Lorton. So your thinking that they are connected is correct. I have your Robert as having 15 kids. Ancestral File 4.19 has listed eight children. Which child are you from? Cheryl

My grandmother talked about her family coming from Greene Co (traced Joseph to Verden, NE) so I'm trying to figure out whether its a paternal (Cox) connection or from the Lorton side. I would love to share any pics that you have. I visited the Verden Cemetery in Nebraska this Spring and have pictures. Thx.

William HERMAN Lorton

William Herman Lorton is my second great grandfather. I believe he went by Herman from what I can tell by census images. He was married to Harriet True. They had 5 children-Matilda (my great grandmother), Benjamin Edward, Lillian Evelyn, Ellen Lorena, and Nora Frances. I have a letter that a E. E. Lorton from Medford Oregon had written to my great grandfather regarding some type of family inheritance through a Buchanan line. He was wanting the family info for this reason. It says that he is Mattie (Matilda) Lorton is his niece. It states we have been in Oregon eleven years, have an orchard, my three boys are all working at good jobs. Beulah and I work every day. If there is anybody that can shed some light on who Herman's parents were it sure would be nice. Also if anyone has a connection to this E. E. Lorton and would like a copy of this letter I would gladly send one. He must have been of higher society because it is type written and I don't believe many people had typewritters in 1932.

I am looking for information on John Lorton Bell b. 1838 in Iowa. The 1890 census for Tulare County CA shows his father's birthplace as TN, and mother IL. But in 1900, he stated his father was from IL....

His mother's name was Lula LORTON. We have a baby picture of her with the studio name on the back as follows: "Wilson's Gallery of Art," which had offices in White Hall and Greenfield.

John L. Bell served in the Civil war...one in the 14th Illinois Regiment and one in the 78th Illinois Regiment... family history tells us that he may have left his unit "early"... though he is buried in the G.A.R. section of the cemetery...

We also have a picture of Margaret Bell Finch photographed by Da Lee in Jerseyville, IL.

Any help would be appreciated.
I am searching for this line also. I am descended from Robert Lorton, Revolutionary War soldier of Virgina, born Feb. 15, 1747. I have Thomas Lorton and Elizabeth Moss' marriage date as June 3, 1745 in Amelia County Virginia. Their marriage date fits with Robert's birthdate. Robert named his second son, Thomas. Robert married Tabitha Ganaway in Prince Edward County, VA. I am trying to link Robert with Thomas and Elizabeth as his parents.

Cheryl,

I would love to have copies of those marriage records. My Email is lslaux@aol.com. Send me a message there so I may send you my address. I will reimburse for your trouble. I am from Robert's son, Henry. Robert and Tabitha had eight children. The confusion with the 15 children that is seen on some lists is that they lived with their son, Thomas in later years and so his wife, Francis and their children are often included incorrectly as their children. Also, there is some disagreement about whether there were really twins, Mary and Polly or whether these name are in fact for one child who was christened Mary but called Polly as a nickname. Robert and Tabitha are buried in Greene County Illinois. I have photos of the tombstones. I also have photos of the Lorton bridge with Henry sitting on it as well as some brief family histories compiled for reunions. I will be happy to share. Do you have a maiden name for Elizabeth Moss? Apparently she was a widow when she married Thomas Lorton since some references say Mrs. Elizabeth Moss. Thanks very much for your response.

Not much at this webpage but they have the following information: John Martin and Elizabeth Lorton married March 30, 1843 by Richard Barrier, Wayne County KY. John born 1825, Elizabeth born 1823. Parents of Elizabeth: Jacob and Sarah Lorton. Perhaps your Sarah is a sister to this Elizabeth. Youi could search Wayne County KY USGenWeb and see what you come up with. You could access this website and email them for information.

Cheryl,

I am descended from Robert Lorton born 1747. What are the birth and marriage dates for your Thomas Jr and Polly Dickenson? I still do not have any real evidence that links Robert Lorton to Thomas Lorton Sr. Do you have anything like census records or etc. to link your Thomas Jr. with this Thomas Sr.? I cannot find two Thomas Lortons on the census records, only one. I found out that Elizabeth Moss was probably married to a Francis Moss which may help us find her maiden name. There was a posting in which someone found a court record that Thomas Lorton signed marriage papers for a daughter of Elizabeth Moss and Francis Moss. Thanks for your help.

Had on, when he went away, a brown Pea Jacket, a white Flannel Wastecoat ty'd with Strings, a check'd Shirt, a Pair of Leather Breeches, a Pair of old Shoes and Stockings, an old Felt Hat, and a coarse worsted Cap. Whoever will take up the said Runaway, and bring him to his Master, near Williamsburg, shall be handsomely rewarded, besides what the Law allows, by
Robert Lorton.

Considering the Robert Lorton who married Tabitha Gannaway was born in 1747 you have to wonder if this Robert Lorton is related....
