Hi Susan,

Richard is right-Louies are from Tai Shan Province. I visited my parent's house 3 years ago. It's quite a trip!
I have a house in NZ - north of Auckland - Stanmore Bay. I use to go to NZ like every other year but haven't been back since 2000. I plan on going back soon though! Email me at rhl53@yahoo.com if you like. I believe the other threads mention other Louies in NZ. Cool to know Louies are in NZ also!

Ray

Mary M. Louie 1921-2009

Mary M. Louie A native San Franciscan, born on Jan. 16, 1921, passed on July 30, 2009 at Summit Hospital in Oakland. For over 30 years, she was a noted San Francisco Chinatown restaurateur, who loved life and people and touched so many with her warmth, generosity and nurturing spirit. Her perseverance and ideals were an inspiration to us and we will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband (Park) and granddaughter (Kristina) and is survived by her son Reginald, daughter-in-law Anne Hench, daughter Sarah, son-in-law Paul Heintel, grandson Mikkel Louie and his wife Karen, granddaughter Meghann Louie-Heintel, and by six sisters and a brother and over 40 nieces/nephews and their children. A wake service will be held on Monday, August 10th, 6.00 PM and Memorial Service on Tuesday, August 11th, 11.00 AM both at Green Street Mortuary, 649 Green St., San Francisco, CA. Her burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1000 El Camino Real, Colma, CA. Reception will follow at 3.00 pm Four Seas Restaurant, 731 Grant Ave., SF, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made on behalf of Mary M. Louie to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (https://www.hdsa.org/donations.html).

Published in San Francisco Chronicle from August 7 to August 8, 2009

LOUIE

To Richard and Alex,
The Louie name is indeed intriguing me still. Variations exist and I can't understand why LOUIE instead of Luey or Lui. I have been tracing history and heritage as my artwork is all about that.

Alex, you were (if you still visit this site) keen to post some images here of your visit to Tai Shan... I am heading to my ancestoral village of Tai Shan (Hwai San...Si Yip) in September 2010 and I am probably more anxious than excited having never been to China before but I expect it to be AWESOME and inspiring.

Hope to hear from either of you soon.

There are some things that i have access to here in SOUTHERN California that I can look up.

(and for the record, Dai Kwong is a commune, not technically a village. It was the name given to the Lui 'area' after the communist takeover to incorporate ALL of the Lui villages on the outskirts of Toishan city.)

Kathryn Lui, Kit-Jing
PamperedChefMom@ureach.com

Im wondering if this is this relates to the Louie family from Tauranga?
My late husband use to tell a good story about Louies ( Im not a 100% certain but I think it was Louies)
They owned the only other Chinese /Asian type restuarant-takeaway in Tauranga ( located top of Devonport Road and still operating) My husband had the other one and a kitchen full of Chinese cooks This would be the 1980-1990 period
It seemed the Louies ran theirs as a family affair.
One night their esteemed grandfather who was apparently a neat old guy, passed away while they were working, so they put him in their chiller untill closing time.
True or just a rumour? -I couldnt say.
But I do know he had enourmous respect for their work ethics and admired the fact that they were so diligent.
I can recall one family of Louies who lived off Omanawa Road
around the mid 80s. They had mixed bloodlines and the children (as they so often are in such cases) were lovely looking, a touch exotic with wonderful facial features.
I live in Germany so have lost touch with these things but was reminded when I read this posting

why it's "Louie" and not "Lui"

Hello,

Like many of you, I used to think that we had the spelling "Louie" because the first of our relatives who came over simply accepted without question this adaptation of our name (from non-Chinese immigration officials). However, when I finally asked my father about it, he said that it was *intentional* for us Toisanese. And as far as I know, all Louies are Toisanese.

In Standard Cantonese, our name is pronounced most like "Lui" - hence, the number of Hong Kong (standard Cantonese-speaking) Chinese with our last name who spell it that way. But in Toisan, our name is pronounced in a slightly different way - it has a distinct twang to it, and actually does sound more like "Louie." So, it's possible our ancestors fully knew what they were doing.

And really, if you think about it, *any* translation of our name into the Roman alphabet is going to be a westernization/anglicization. Unless the government-in-question is going to start learning how to write the Chinese character for "thunder" on all our forms, I don't see how "Lui" is any more authentic than "Louie," especially since I've never met anyone named Louie who wasn't Chinese. "Louis" is French. "Louie" is 98.9% Chinese.

Maria,

I didn't know that there are Mexican Louie's! Welcome to the family!

As for our family roots, from what I can tell, most Louie's came from
Southeastern China from a Province called Tai Shan. In particular,
at least according to the other people I have met, most Louie's came
from a particular area of Tai Shan - my family originated in a small
village called Dai Gong.

My father was the first of my family to leave for the western world.
He decided to settle in Vancouver, Canada in the 1950's. At the time
of his arrival, Benevolvent Associations were the social clubs of
the new immigrants. They helped new arrivals find the basics - housing,
employment... - in addition, they would help with other matters - legal
issues, planning of funerals for those who did not have any family.

You should check with the San Francisco Soo Yuen Benevolvent Assn. I believe
that their address was posted in another message.

Julie,

Vancouver's Chinatown has gone through (what I would call) a
"generational" change. Many of the older original shopkeepers have
closed their shops or sold out to a new party. Even the shops I
remember when I was a child in the 1970's have changed. Many of
the newer shops are owned by newer immigrants.

My father may remember as he arrived in Vancouver in the late 50's.
Do you have any more information on the location of the shop?

Thanks
Richard
Richard,
I hope you pick this message up. Are you still in Vancouver? If so, do you recall a store in old Chinatown called Sam Wah Yick Kee (or something similar). This would have been a grocery store started in the 1920s. Is it still in existence? Do you know who owned it?

Louie is a Cantonese (Guangzhou) name. My father came from there in 1932 and setteled in San Francisco. There is a Louie family association there..called the Siu Yuen Society. My spelling may be off. You may be interested to know that most of us Louie's are related, BUT that there are some not so true Louies who adoped the name in order to beat the immegration quota in the US, circa 1850.

Hi!! I too am researching the Louie/Louia surname of French origin. My greatgrandparents were Adolphe Frank Louia (b. 15 Jan 1865) m. Augustine JoMar (b 22 Aug 1864) 10 June 1884 in Metz, France. They came to the US in the summer or fall of 1884 and then resided with cousins (Schuessler) who lived in Fredonia, Kansas There is a distinct possibility we may be researching the same line. I don't have much to go on except they were from the Alsace-Lorrain area. Please let me know your thoughts asap. Thanks. Donna C

Dutch Louie - OBIT

FYI - no relation -
Dutch Louie was a residence of this place for more than twenty years, and is well and favorably known to the old ranch hands as a typical westerner. He served several years in the Confederate army before coming here, since which time he has been employed as a cook on different ranches and round-ups in this immediate vicinity. His age is now known by anyone here, but he is thought to be about 72 years old.
About two weeks previous to this death he was enjoying good health but was taken ill, shortly, with a severe cold which settled on his lungs and later resulted in pneumonia. He was removed to the Grace hospital at Glendive on Tuesday morning, with the hopes of a speedy recovery. But the decease {sic} having too strong a hold on him, death claimed him as its victim within a very short time. The remains were shipped to Wibaux on Thursday morning from Glendive and interment took place from the Catholic church at 10 a.m.

July 9, 1908
The Wibaux Pioneer Gazette
Wibaux, Dawson County, Montana
(later became Wibaux Co., MT)

The Soo Yuen Benevolent Assocation, or the Louie Family Association (which also is the association for the surname Fong) is still very operational in San Francisco's Chinatown. I should be able to provide you with definite contact information if you're interested. Incidentally, I received a scholarship to college from them when I was a senior in high school (which was only two years ago.)

If I remember correctly, the Louie family contact there is Stephen Louie.

California Louies

I'm glad to finally see a message board for my surname here! Though many of you seem to be from the Vancouver, Canada area, I was wondering whether anyone had any ties to Louies in California. My grandfather, Richard Louie, was born (b. 1910) and raised in Fresno, California - my great-grandfather immigrated at the turn of the century. Among his siblings were Pershing, Bessie, Walter, Francis, Pearl, Minnie, and Jeannette. After being schooled in China, my grandfather moved to San Francisco Chinatown to raise his family.

Do any of those names sound familiar? Pershing Louie served and was killed in World War II and is buried at Golden Gate Natl Cemetary in the SF Bay Area.

I should go home and dig up my genealogy papers once again - I had forgotten how much I enjoyed putting my family history together!

You have only to look at those immigrants bearing the same name as others to agree that this did indeed happen.

Hello Susan and to those that I have only just now met thru the message board, greetings from NZ.
