Earliest name Lovelady found was Ann Lovelady in 1600 England. It has always been Lovelady, but has been misspelled Lovletty, Lovlatty, Loveladie. From the the dictionary of surnames, it means "lover of ladies".

"The Formative Period in Alabama 1815-1828" by Thomas Perkins Abernathy. Published by the University of Alabama Press. 1965. "A group of Scotch-Irish who had tried farming in Tennessee in 1809 settled in the northern part of Alabama in the rich Tennessee Valley district. Another group came through Athen, GA going to New Orleans, LA. This was the Federal Road and it was on this road that thousands of settlers found their way to Alabama." Lovelady is mentioned.

Lovelady is Scotch-Irish. Southern Lovelady's first generation was American Patriot, R.S., Thomas Lovelady a/k/a Lovlatty. The R. S. fought with Andrew Jackson and went to Texas around 1814. His widow, Nancy Briggs, drew a pension. I have the application I file.

Also, check Orange County, NC for Thomas and Marshall Lovelady. Both were chain bearers for North Carolina surveyors office. Then, check Tennessee for John and Marshall Lovelady. They are right in there along side John Sevier, Gov.of TN.

LOVELADY - LIVERPOOL, Lancashire

I am looking for details of two Lovelady's in my Knight Tree who may be connected but do not know yet.
The forst is a Sarah Ann Lovelady Abt 1839, Liverpool, who Married Joh Knight 1860 St Nick's, Liverpool and had 5 children. On the Marriage Certificate she gives her father as Thomas Loveday - Fur Cutter. The only Thomas I can find on the 1861 Census is a Boarder in Islington, Liverpool Born 1798 and a Fur Cutter but no sign of his wife ior family anywhere ( 41, 51, 61 Census's).

The second is a John Alexander Loveladay Abt 1842 Liverpool who Married Elizabeth Wilkinson in 1861 Liverpool and had 7 children, one of whom, Ada Elizabeth Married Thomas Henry Knight in 1900 Liverpool.
Any help solving these two's parentage appreciated.
- Clif ( London )

Hi. I wondered if you have any information on a Coy Lovelady? There was also a sister of Coy's, named Lillian and she was my grandmother. She would have been born around 1900. She married an Ernest Bobbitt and later a man named Clint Landtrip (sp.??). She had two sons, Homer Houston and Sam Houston. I believe her Father's name was John and her mother Ginny.
Anything you might be able to add to the little I know of them would be appreciated. Thank You.
Tokcha

Hi, I also have been told there is a Native American background in my side of the Lovelady family. Unfortunately, I didn't know my Father until just a few years before his death (divorce in the 1950's was still uncommon), and when I did get to know him, he wouldn't tell me too much about his family. Coincidentally, his middle name was also Houston. Maybe that is common in Texas, I don't know. I have been told his grandfather was John A. Lovelady, that he was perhaps a blacksmith and they lived in east Texas around Grapeland. His mother was Lillian Lovelady. Hope it helps. Any info you might have would also be appreciated.
Tokcha

The George W. Lovelady that I find was born in Bibb County Alabama in 1847 and first married Matilda A. Fretwell in 1870. They had 11 children. They had moved to Union Parish Louisiana, where she died in 1893 and was buried in the Shiloh Baptist church cemetery. He married Martha <Mattie> Temperance Gray Norris in 1895 and they had 2 children. He had moved to Edgewood Texas where he died in 1928 and his body was returned to Shiloh where he was buried next to his first wife. I have visited the gravesites at the cemetery.

I have seen this incorrect information previously. Thomas Lovelace was of the aristocracy and lived somewhere in the south of England. He has NO relationship with any Loveladys who all came from Altcar, Formby, Ince Blundell and Thornton which are villages just north of Liverpool, what used to be known as Lancashire but is now known as Merseyside. I used to live near here. Loveladys populated this area from the 1500s. As far as I am aware no one has been able to prove where Thomas Lovelady or Lovlatty, the first known Lovelady in the US,actually came from. Hope this helps.

Hi Judy, I feel sure there is a connection somewhere along the line.

My tree is as follows:

Richard Lovelady born 1770 at Formby married Margaret (Peggy Woods) (they had a son Stephen born 1798)

then John Lovelady born 1800 at Ince Blundell married Margaret Billington, (they had a son Stephen born 1842)

Their son was my great grandfather Thomas Lovelady born 1840 at Ince Blundell and married to Mary Copple. Their son George Mathew born 1867 was my grandfather (they also had a Stephen born 1869)

Who did your Stephen marry? This may give me a clue as I have a lot of Lovelady information.

There were a lot of Loveladys living in Ince Blundell in the 1800s. I just wish they hadn't kept using the same Christian names over and over again - it would have made research so much easier!!! Hope to hear from you soon. You can contact me direct via margaretphilpott@hotmail.com Cheers, Margaret

I believe he was probably illiterate and when asked his name the person wrote it down as Lovelatty rather than Lovelady. I have never been able to find any Lovelatty in the UK census's or archives.
Like you I like to have the hard evidence but I have never been able to find out anything about the first Thomas Lovelady who went to the States.
My new email address is M_Philpott@westnet.com.au
and I would love to hear how you have been getting on with your research. Kind regards, Margaret (Lovelady) Philpott in Cairns, Australia.

I have only just found your letter to me from 2005 - don't know how I missed it previously. Anyway I hope the following helps:

Henry Lovelady 1852 + Emma 1854 Liverpool
Henrietta 19 Aug 1872 St Peter Liverpool
Henry 1873 Manchester
Thomas Edmund 1878 Manchester
William 1880 Liverpool
John Gorsuch 9 Jan 1882 St Nathaniel, West Derby
Joseph 1883

This info came to me from a fellow researcher.
I also have contact with a person who has the above in her line. Please let me know if I have been of any help.
Kind regards, Margaret Lovelady Philpott
Sorry I can't help you Kat. All my ancestors are from Lancashire, England. I suspect that is where your Thomas originally came from because the surname Lovelady was almost entirely based just north of Liverpool.
I have never been able to find out anything about your Thomas Lovelady born 1700. Best wishes, Margaret

I am seeking further information on Thomas Lovelady, born 1709 in North Carolina, married to Hannah Hix. Numerous people seem to have his father listed as Thomas Lovelace, but this man died in 1689,20 years before his supposed son was born. Does anyone have any further correct information??? I am becoming rather frustrated. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in this regard.

Hi Lovelady Researchers -- Have any of you done your Y-DNA? (Fred, I know you've seen me ask this before?) I submitted my husband's to FTDNA. He's the Lovelady. If we could get a Lovelady Surname project started, it would be helpful in determining if (how) we are OR AREN'T related and how far back....I had the 37 marker test done on my husband. I'm just getting back on the Lovelady bandwagon as I've been researching some of the surnames on my side for the last several months, but I am familiar with several of your names. (Fred, I'll be contacting you seperately...soon.) I'll be out of town this next week, but then hope to get back to work. Look forward to hearing from some of you and am hopeful that we can get some DNA comparisons going. Most of my 'proofs' are from birth certs., death certs., and census records.
