The Lovell was Lula or Lulu Lovell. She originally married Oscar Ernest Hale better known as Sam Hale. Sam died before 1920 and Lula married Ransom Ashford. Following life in the Dierks lumber camps of Oklahoma, they moved to Oregon. The move was around 1945, give or take. Lula had a brother named Jim Lovell. I don't have my files at hand but I do know he had 9 children when his first wife died and he then married Hattie Mae who gave him 9 more children.
I have more info at home. let me know if you'd like me to dig it out.

I am looking for the parents of Edmund Lovell born 1799 VA Thought to be Halifax Co. He left there sometime around 1850 and ended up in Newton Co Arkansas. I think he had one son there before he came to Arkansas. I am sure he had other children that stayed in VA. I wonder if we are looking for the same parents. I would love to hear from you.
Thanks Marie

My Lovell family came from the area around Halifax Co and Bedford Co VA. Your post caught my eye because one of the Lovell Girls in 1850-1860 Went to live with I think There first names were Thomas and Eliza Wood. The rest of their lives she either lived with them or next door to them. When she married a second time, her son continued to live with Mr & Mrs wood I think until their deaths. I have been trying to find a connection between them. Your post is the first thing to give me hope. If these people could possible be your family, I would love to hear from you
Thanks Marie

I'm trying to put together the descendants of Obediah & Mary Jane Peterson Lovell and need help.

I do not have the death date or burial place for either. The last time I find Obadiah on the census is 1900 and Mary Jane on the 1910 census. Obediah Bradberry Lovell was b Sept 1851 according to the 1900 census and Mary Jane Peterson was b Dec 1853. I have not found their marriage date or place, but they were probably married in Henderson Co. When did they die? Where are they buried?

Their children:
1. Louisa A. b abt 1875

2. Mary Ellen b abt 1876 m Wm. Jesse Lovell in 1894, Henderson. Used Ellen. He d before 1910. In 1928 Ellen m Wm. B. Smith and they were living with her son-in-law Homer Barnett in 1930 in Humboldt. Homer was the widower of Ellen's dau Annie. They had 3 children before Annie died. When? Where buried? The children: James M, Miloy L, & Dartha L.

3. Lida or Lidelia J. b Dec 1878

4. William Thomas b 9 May 1881. Used Will T. married Virgie Buchanan 17 Aug 1907. Will d 22 Dec 1961; Virgie d 29 Aug 1971. Where are they buried? Would there be an obituary somewhere for them? They had 10 children, and I have no information about them after the 1930 census.

Will's 10 children: Lillian, Alfred, Stella, Wm. Matthew, Carl W., Hazel, Elizabeth, Sue, Jennie and Bell.

5. Delia F. b Dec 1883

6. Minnie M. b Sep 1886 - may have married J. A. Woodley and/or Ernest Fly.

7. Allie B. b 1889 d 13 Jun 1974 in Henderson Co., married Ora D. Williams b 1904 d 13 Feb 1980 in Henderson. Had at least 3 children - daus Emmie J. & Tommie and an unnamed son b 1930.

8. Egbert C. Lovell b 1893 m Bertie Coney b Abt 1894 in Gibson Co Dec 1925. Had a dau Ruth

9. Daisy Myrtle Lovell b 1896 m John Calvin Peterson b abt 1857 m 22 Dec 1912 in Gibson Co. Lived in Madison Co. in 1930. She d March 1969 in Hobbs, Lea Co., NM. Moved to St. Louis, MO by 1930.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me on any member of this family.
hello Tracey,

I too am related to John Lovell and Union Lee. Their son Duriah was my great grandfather. I'm not sure if we have already been in contact through genes reunited.

I'm afraid that I have no info going back further than these two, but you may be interested to know that Duriah was the grandfather of Mignonette Gore, my paternal grandmother, whose birth appears never to have been registered. If not for her christian name I may never have made the connection. It is all quite mysterious, but there is no doubt that this is correct.

The Lovell Gypsies are thought to have taken their name from the aristocratic Lovell family, who may well have been Normans, but it is unlikely the Lovell Gypsies were Norman.

One theory I have found on the web is:Tradition hands down that the Lovells came from Spain, fleeing persecution along with such families as the Boswells, Hearns, Coopers and Lees. After arriving in Cornwall from France, they established a travelling circuit between England and Wales.
As with many Gypsy tribes, a British surname was adopted and used among non-Romanies instead of their own. Lovell was chosen either because it meant the same as their Romani name (which means good-looking) or, legend says, because they protected a "Lord Lovell" from being imprisoned and were allowed to use his name in gratitude.
Trying to help my son-in-law find his roots. His father was Charles Edward Holt. Charles was married several times. Once possibly to John Steinbeck's ex wife. Once to a woman named Earnestine Trapp. He had at least two sons and a daughter with Earnestine. Lastly he was married to Judith Denney Hall. He had two sons with her, Patrick Denney Holt, Sr, and Carlos Gregory Holt. He lived for a time in Clarksville, TN. DOB 1919, DOD 1994. If you may have info we would appreciate it. He has been told Charles' father was named William, and mother was named Eleanor or Elenora Lovell. Their graves are supposed to be in Sringfield Cemetary in Madison, TN. Pleas respond directly to me a nubblesmom@yaahoo.com.
Searching for grandfather

I am searching for my paternal grandfather, H.S. Lovell. Several letters to/from him are addressed to Harry or signed Russ so I am unsure of his actual name. He served in WW2 in the 546th Anti-aircraft artillery, Battery C and spent stateside period after returning from Europe with the 8th Ete(?) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. I have his service number and determined he enlisted from IL, MI, or WI in the 6th Corps area of induction. He was discharged 6 April 1946 and apparently resided for sometime at 3952 Montrose Avenue in Chicago which was a vacant lot in the early 90's from a trip there and a hardware store from google earth now. The last reference to him is a letter address to him "c(are)/o(f) Shroeder, Oroville Inn, Oroville Caif".

His letters indicate he was married with a family at the time he met my grandmother. He was looking for a place "where my sinus trouble won't bother me as ... in Chicago." My father is attempting work for his service record but it is in the realm of the records destroyed in the Archives fire so we are not expecting much there.

Picture is located on my ancestry tree.

I do appreciate any possible help or information available.

Re: Lovell family mystery 1850

Nancy,
Did you find the information you needed on Martha "Patsy" Lovell and Richard Ballinger of Floyd County VA.

My gg-grandfather was their son, Marion Ballinger and my great grandmother was Rosabell Ballinger who married Abraham Weeks.

Richard and Martha were living as common law husband and wife. They did finally marry when Richard was up in years. At that time all the children's names were legally changed from Lovell to Ballinger.

I have seen John J. Lovell (Lovel) listed as her father as well as a George. So far I haven't gotten around to really checking to verify.

If you notice Richard and Martha's birth dates you'll see he was much older than she so I don't think she had been married before. I've never found anything to show she was.

Richard's first wife was Sally (Sallie) Wade from the Bedford County area of Virginia and they had 3 children.

1. Report of the Virginia State Library: Ballinger. Sally, Wade. 1838 Jany.2. (A1803)Divorce from her husband, Richard Ballinger, on grounds of abuse and open adultery. Certificate signed by Silas Taylor, Howell Robinson, Isaac Wade, Jr., John Hewitt, Archd. Franklin, Franklin Creasy and 17 others. Referred.

2. Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia: CHAP.300 An ACT divorcing Sally Ballinger from her husband Richard Ballinger (passed April 6, 1838)

I hope this helps.

Elaine
